  Amazing celebrity Halloween costumes

  Celeb’s Halloween costumes are always so much better than the rest of ours. Their nearly limitless budgets make it hard for the rest of us to compare in our $30 ill-fitting, glued together costumes. Parties have been going on all week on both coasts, with some pretty impressive (and not-so-occasionally skanky) costumes. Kim Kardashian made a perfect Wonder Woman, while Lance Bass had (what Websters is my Bitch pointed out) the laziest costume ever.

  As great as everyone looked, absolutely no one compared to the cast of the Today Show. Their costumes were insane. They showed a commitment to costumed entertainment not seen since… well ever. I seriously doubt they got any newsworthy work done, because I doubt there’s any news fattest than Matt Lauer as the biggest Humpty Dumpty ever.

  In what has become an annual tradition, the Today show hosts (and newsreader–of all four hours!) dressed in elaborate Halloween costumes. This year, the theme was a storybook Halloween: Matt Lauer was Humpty Dumpty, Al Roker was the Gingerbread Man (with a suggestively placed… decoration), Meredith Vieira was Pinocchio (she said was “high” from the glue on her nose prosthetic), Ann Curry was Cinderella (”an ethnic J-Lo Cinderella”), Kathie Lee Gifford was the Big Bad Wolf, Hoda Kotb was Little Red Riding Hood, and Amy Robach was Rapunzel.

  And why a storybook theme? Well, Today’s parent company–NBC Universal–has the animated film, The Tale of Despereaux, coming out this fall. Hello, corporate synergies!

  I don’t care why they did it, those costumes are awesome. Meredith Vieira’s Pinocchio looks so good that it almost appears painful. Being made out of wood can’t be comfortable for the joints. Though it was one of the more subtle costumes, my favorite was Natalie Morales and her baby. She was dressed as Princess Leia, but the best part was the baby was wearing a little tiny Yoda hat.

  I don’t even want to imagine what the costume budget was for this thing. But if you see the reporters writing on white boards on Monday, you’ll know why.

  Jennifer Hudson creates foundation for the families of murder victims

  Jennifer Hudson has done quite the good deed after major tragedy hit her family last week. She’s created a foundation to assist the families of murder victims and named it after her deceased relatives.

  Jennifer Hudson’s family announced Thursday a new foundation for families of murder victims. The Hudson-King Foundation for Families of Slain Victims is named in honor of the singer-actress’s slain mother Darnell Hudson Donerson, brother Jason Hudson and nephew Julian King.

  “The specific purpose of the Foundation is to care for the needs of families who have lost relatives to a violent crime,” the family says in a statement. “This encompasses their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter as well as grief counseling.”

  The foundation announcement followed a prayer vigil Wednesday night in Chicago.

  “Jennifer sang her first song in this church – she said her first prayer in this church,” her cousin Shari Nichols Witt said of the Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church. Witt also spoke fondly of the actress-singer’s slain nephew, saying 7-year-old Julian King “seemed like he was ahead of his time.”

  The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who spoke at the vigil, told PEOPLE that Hudson, 27, and her family “are overwhelmed by the suddenness and the unexpectedness of it all. This family knows triumph, and they also know tragedy.”

  Most people don’t realize that services like this don’t exist in the vast majority of cities. I had a criminology professor tell a class about cleaning up a crime scene in her mother-in-law’s home. Her brother-in-law was schizophrenic - one of the very rare ones who could be dangerous when he was off his meds. He’d been living with his mother when something triggered him and he stabbed her 20-some times. The mother lived (and the son kept living with her after that), but it was up to the family to figure out how to clean up the crime scene. My professor described it very vividly and really explained how upsetting and deeply emotional the process was. I just remember thinking how out of this world hard that would be on top of everything else.

  It sounds like the Hudson-King Foundation may fill in some of the gaps in the legal system that don’t properly take care of victims. What a deeply considerate way for Jennifer to honor her slain family.

  Few things make me happier than photos of Mariah Carey. Because no matter how badly you dress, you can always look at them and say, “Well at least I don’t dress like that.” It’s great for the self esteem. Mariah and husband Nick Cannon dressed as a firefighter and a fireskank for a Halloween party last night in New York. And in true Mariah fashion she was way over the top to the point of embarrassing.

  It’s a Halloween accessory to put even the fanciest broomstick to shame - a full-size fire truck.

  Mariah Carey arrived at a New York club on the back of the vehicle dressed in a fire jacket and little else.

  The singer showed off her bejewelled red underwear and satin red stockings at a strictly for adults Halloween party which she attended with new husband Nick Cannon.

  Supposedly Nick and Mariah really plan their fights ahead – they’re already arguing over how to spend New Year’s Eve.

  Newlyweds Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are battling again - this time over how to spend New Year’s Eve!

  Nick wants the couple to host a splashy las Vegas bash with a potential payday of a half million bucks - but Mariah does NOT want to spend the night working. She’d rather go to the Bahamas for a vacation, insiders say.

  “They’re at it again!” a source told The Enquirer. “Things are so bad that Mariah and Nick may not even make it to New Year’s Eve!

  Mariah took in a cool $250,000 hosting the same part at The Venetian hotel’s Tao nightclub last New Year’s Eve, “so Nick figures that together they could bring in $500,000 for one night’s work,” the source said.

  It’s cute that Nick thinks his party value is the same as Mariah’s. I’m not sure if he’s delusional or just bad at math. I’m fairly certain that after this the Easter fighting will begin, and then they’ll probably move ahead to arguing about Thanksgiving 2009. This bodes well for their relationship – as do the matching costumes.

  Jessica Simpson’s Major Movie Star goes straight to DVD

  Jessica Simpson’s absolute bomb of a move, “Major Movie Star,” must be kept under lock and key. Though the film’s been released to glorious box office returns in Russia, there still isn’t so much as a trailer –even on YouTube. Keeping something so legendarily bad off YouTube must take a lot of effort.

  Today it was announced that the film is being retitled, to the even more awesome “Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous.” Feel free to laugh your ass off. It’s also going straight to DVD in the states. And I’m guessing that even given the DVD shame, the film still has further to fall. There’s always the dollar bin at Blockbuster.

  Jessica Simpson’s Major Movie Star may have opened No. 1 in Russia earlier this month - but it’s not having as much success stateside. The flick will be renamed Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous, and released only on DVD in America, a source confirms to Usmagazine.com.

  The movie - about a ditzy movie star who enlists in the army to earn money to pay her bills - is slated to hit stores Feb. 3. The film will still premiere in Bulgaria next month, but, as Fox News points out, it will not have a release date in any country in which English is the primary language.

  Simpson’s rep had no comment.

  Simpson’s last movie, Blonde Ambition, hit video store shelves after showing in just eight Texas theaters, and earning about $1,300.

  Wow, that’s major embarrassment. I can’t help but wonder if Jess feels the appropriate amount of shame. I’m glad the studio cares enough about the American public not to inflict this supposed monstrosity upon us. But doing it to other countries isn’t very nice either.

  If nothing else, at least this means snippets will finally end up on YouTube, and we can see just how truly mortifying this movie really is – without paying the $1 it’s worth.

  New Miley Cyrus photos leaked

  Well it’s Friday, and you know what that means: more quasi-inappropriate pictures from Miley Cyrus. Seriously, the girl has no class. While this picture isn’t all that scandalous, it certainly reeks of attention getting behavior. Miley is seen looking into the camera seductively wearing a low-cut shirt and squeezing her boobs together with her arms. All while working the “I’m so young and innocent face.”

  Clearly she doesn’t care a lick about her job with Disney or she wouldn’t constantly be taking and emailing photos like this. Though she claims to still be all about Hannah Montana.

  Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, “Hannah Montana” star Miley Cyrus has no plans to leave the hit Disney show that made her a star. In an interview with “Extra,” the teen queen insists she has plenty of “Hannah” days ahead of her.

  “We’ve got too many episodes to finish,” Cyrus said of the show’s current season. As far as the future goes, she added, “I am staying with the show. It’s so much fun. We have a really good time — as much as it’s really hard work, it’s really great.”

  The only wanderlust Cyrus says she currently suffers from is the desire to hit the road behind the wheel of her own car.

  “I am begging,” she the soon-to-be 16-year-old admitted. “(But) I got to go take my (driving) test first.”

  You have to wonder why Miley’s parents haven’t taken her camera away. And if it’s attached to the computer, then take the whole damn thing away. She’s obviously their cash cow, and it’s hard to figure out if they’ll make more money sticking with Disney and not pissing them off, or if getting more publicity will ultimately net more. This is just pure speculation, but something tells me these issues factor in much more highly than any sense of decency.

  Heidi Klum told Seal she was pregnant with ex’s baby a month into dating

  Heidi Klum and Seal seem to have one of those relationships that’s so perfect you can’t help but seethe with envy. And be really happy for them, of course. I mean the man had an igloo custom made and outfitted with a bed, rose petals, and candles to propose to Klum. That’s pretty much the most insanely over-the-top yet still crazily romantic things I’ve ever heard of.

  Seal’s given a long interview to the Daily Mail in which he talks about meeting Klum for the first time, along with revealing how he reacted when she told him she was pregnant with another man’s child.

  On a more positive note, Seal also takes inspiration from his life in LA with Klum.

  The couple have two young sons - Henry, three, and 23-month-old Johan - while Seal is stepfather to four-year-old Leni, Heidi’s daughter by motor racing tycoon Flavio Briatore.

  Seal and German-born Klum met five years ago at the GQ Awards in London, although their relationship didn’t begin until a chance encounter in New York weeks later.

  ‘I was taken aback when I met her,’ says Seal. ‘I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I’d seen. I thought: “Wow! Whoever goes out with that girl is one lucky guy!”

  ‘A month into our relationship, she told me she was pregnant, but was no longer with the father. I told her it didn’t change the way I felt about her.

  ‘Apart from being my wife, she’s also my best friend.’

  Seal has never ceased to impress me with how good he is to his wife. Of course the natural response is, “Well, duh, she’s Heidi Klum, any man would be that good to her.” But he seems to bring a certain creativity and love to their relationship that you don’t often see. His response to hearing that Heidi was pregnant with daughter Leni was very sweet and beautiful. Spending the first year of your relationship with a woman who’s pregnant with another man’s child would be challenging for most guys, but I get the impression that for Seal it wasn’t any big deal. I’m sure people tell him all the time that he’s a lucky man to be married to Heidi Klum, but it seems like she’s just as lucky to be married to Seal.

  Madonna & A-Rod take separate helicopters to secret tryst at Seinfelds’

  Madonna and A-Rod met for quite the secret tryst, according to Page Six. The two helicoptered – separately – to Madge’s good friends Jerry and Jessica Seinfelds’ place for some alone time recently. Why the separate helicopters? Well because nothing says, “We’re not doing anything wrong” like two choppers loudly landing at the same location half an hour apart. Clearly Madge places a great importance on the appearance of propriety.

  IT was like a scene out of a James Bond movie last week, as Madonna and Alex Rodriguez secretly jetted off in two private helicopters for a quick and cozy rendezvous in the Hamptons, Page Six has learned. Instead of booking a motel room, the two headed straight to Jerry Seinfeld’s waterfront mansion, where they relaxed in luxury for several hours.

  “The Seinfelds have been friends with Madonna for years. They’re neighbors on the West Side, so it’s really no surprise,” said an insider. “And Jerry and [wife] Jessica go to her concerts whenever she’s in town.” Our spies say the clandestine East End meeting between soon-to-be-divorced Madge and freshly single A-Rod occurred on Oct. 21. A chopper carrying the Yankee slugger was seen landing in East Hampton, where he was picked up in a white Porsche 911 matching the description of Jessica’s car.

  Less than 40 minutes later, another helicopter that took off from Chelsea Piers with Madonna aboard landed at the same airstrip. “A dark SUV and Jerry in another Porsche both pulled up and picked up Madonna and they headed back to Jerry’s place,” a witness told us. “When they arrived at the Seinfeld home, Madonna poked her head out the window and could be clearly seen.”

  It’s not known what the Bronx Bomber, 33, and the Material Mom, 50 - who insist they are just friends - did during their stay at Seinfeld’s 12-acre spread. “About four hours later, the dark SUV left the house and took them all back to the airport. Madonna and the Seinfelds could clearly be seen getting out and piling into the copter that had taken Madonna there in the first place. They left together,” our witness said. “Several minutes later, the helicopter that carried A-Rod also left.”

  I love the line about “It’s not known what [they] did during their stay.” Yeah I don’t want to visualize it either, but I’m guessing I could probably come up with a few generic basics if push came to shove. What would be even more horrifying is if Page Six did know what Madonna and Alex did during their stay.

  A-Rod is clearly incredibly into Madonna. I don’t totally understand it… or even slightly understand it, to be honest. But he’s showering her with gifts. Star says he’s given her a 22-karat-gold bracelet that says bashert, which is Yiddish for “meant to be.” They also call him the “Anti-Guy” pointing out that he’s also bought Madge a Louis Vuitton purse, a pink cocktail ring worth $2,600 and a $8,500 chunky gold necklace. Since it seems like nearly every detail of their lives is already known; they might as well step out publicly together at this point.

  Ashley Olsen secretly planning $1 million wedding

  Ashley Olsen is secretly planning her wedding to her boyfriend of seven months, actor Justin Bartha. Though it’s not clear if Bartha’s actually proposed to the pint-sized mogul, it appears that Ashley is moving forward with plans for quite the lavish, elegant, and surprisingly taco-centric wedding.

  “Ashley has dreamed of having her wedding on the French Riviera, and she’s going to ask her favorite designer and friend, fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, to create a custom-designed gown to the tune of a quarter million dollars!” a pal told THE ENQUIRER.

  “She wants to take her vows under a canopy of exotic white flowers as the sun sets behind her at the super-exclusive Hotel du Cap Eden Roc. The place is for the fabulously wealthy and accepts only cash - no credit cards.” The former “Full House” star will shell out $150,000 to charter a private jet to fly in family members and friends, and pay another $400,000 for three nights of deluxe accommodations for them, said the source.

  Centerpieces from Moe’s Flowers in West Hollywood will be flown in to the tune of $100,000, and Ashley will fork over another $100,000 for a dinner of tacos, enchiladas and guacamole to be catered by the Mexican restaurant Dos Caminos of New York City, said the source.

  “Ashley even wants some of her favorite candy, including Twizzlers, Tootsie Rolls, Sour Patch Kids and Sour Worms to be scattered around the reception for guests to nibble on,” said the pal. “She also wants photographer Anne Leibovitz, who Mary-Kate has worked with, to capture the entire extravaganza on film.”

  It all sounds elegant, but I found the Mexican food a little surprising. My first thought was maybe they’re golden tacos or something. The color could work. They just don’t seem to fit with the rest of the theme. The candy is cute and I’ve heard of other couples doing that as a fun way to add some sweets into the reception. But tacos at a wedding … that might be a first. It’s definitely more memorable than the traditional chicken or fish. If nothing else it strikes me as potentially messy. I have never seen anyone eat a taco with grace. Though I’d guess if anyone could do it in an understated fashion, I’d say Ashley Olsen is up to the task.

  The Enquirer notes that Ashley’s friend says that even though they haven’t dated that long, “‘Ashley thinks she’s found love.’” I’d say it’s still a little early. Clearly she’s serious about the relationship and it’s nice that she’s so happy, but I wouldn’t be putting down a deposit on that taco cart quite yet.

  The Jolie-Pitts only have two day nannies, not six, they claim

  If I had a family half as large as the Jolie-Pitts, and was just 1/20th as rich (I did the math and that would leave my family with 11 million dollars), I would easily employ one nanny for each child, maybe two. As many of you pointed out in the comments, Heidi Klum and Seal have one nanny for each of their three children, so if Brad and Angelina have six nannies what’s the big deal? The only problem is that the six nanny story isn’t true, and the couple uses just two nannies who don’t even stay overnight to watch their half dozen children:

  It was widely reported Wednesday that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have six to eight nannies working for them to help take care of their adorable brood of six. But when momlogic asked Jolie’s rep, he told us that the story is untrue! Jolie’s rep Oren Segal tells momlogic that the family only employs two part-time nannies and they do not live on the property.

  Either way, Brad and Angelina have happy well adjusted kids and are helping raise awareness of good causes and international adoption by donating their time to charity and bringing orphans into their home. Who would begrudge them six nannies? They can have 12 for all I care.

  Angelina told Hello! Magazine in a super long interview published earlier this month that the family is enjoying their stay in Berlin and that there are plenty of family-friendly places to go. She said that her children have been making friends with the children of architects that Brad knows in Germany, and that Shiloh even had a playdate, in which she quickly picked up the German word for no, “Nein”.

  Brad and Angelina are involved with their kids and clearly cherish their family, which Angelina described as “big, loud,” and “busy” to Hello. They plan their work schedules so that one of them is always available for their kids. You often see one of them bringing one or more of their children on business trips and on movie sets. The famous couple probably doesn’t have a lot of nannies because that would keep them from missing some of the special moments in their children’s lives.   Hudson family’s neighbors says they ignored Balfour’s threats

  One of Jennifer Hudson’s close friends has told Us Weekly that William “Flex” Balfour, the man believed to have killed Hudson’s mother Darnell, brother Jason, and nephew, Julian, had made threats against the family before. He’d also gotten in several physical altercations with Jason and with Jennifer’s ex-fiancé. Her sister had accused Balfour of selling one of their cars without their permission. According to the source, the Hudson family didn’t take Balfour’s threats seriously enough.

  Balfour, 27 - who is divorced from Hudson’s sister, Julia, a bus driver - got into a huge fight with Julia, Darnell and Jason about a month ago, a neighbor says in the newest issue of Us Weekly. James Peyton, Hudson’s ex-fiance, was also present. “Flex tried to start a fistfight with Jason, and James beat up Flex,” the neighbor adds. Shortly after, Flex began to threaten the family, saying “he would kill Julia and mess up everyone in the house,” the source tells Us.

  The supposed reason of the feud? TMZ.com reports Balfour clashed with the family after Julia claimed he sold one of their cars without permission. “Flex was crazy, but Jason never took him seriously,” the source tells Us. “Jason always thought he would be safe, that he could protect himself.” The estranged couple had screaming matches, and had “been having problems, but I never expected anything like this,” neighbor Angela Russell admits to Us.

  Balfour is being held on a probation violation but hasn’t been charged with the murders or even officially called a suspect. In June police arrested him with a rock of crack cocaine, but his probation wasn’t revoked. Good to know that whole probation thing is just an idle threat.

  Yesterday we reported that Jennifer Hudson had gone into hiding due to safety concerns. I can’t imagine what she’s going through right now. The heartache she must be dealing with is incredible, and to have to worry for her own safety on top of it all must be an enormous burden. Hopefully police will actually arrest and charge the guilty party soon, and whatever safety fears Jennifer has will be resolved.

  Get out the banjo, here’s one you don’t hear every day. Actor Bill Pullman’s 19-year-old son Jack was arrested for possessing moonshine and assaulting a government official. I was under the impression that moonshine was best left to the Great Depression and old James Taylor songs, but apparently it holds a great deal of appeal to the teenage spawn of semi-famous actors.

  Bill Pullman’s 19-year-old son has been busted for allegedly possessing moonshine and assaulting a government official.

  According to Ashville, N.C., news station WLOS, Jack Pullman and his friend, Allan Gaddy, also 19, were arrested Monday and face numerous charges including resisting officers, assaulting a government official, underage drinking and possession of moonshine. The two were released from jail the following night.

  Pullman – who starred in Independence Day, Sleepless in Seattle and many other films – has issued no comment.

  The Pullman family must be so proud. Times must be tough if young Jack is resorting to the shine. I’m pretty sure even an average, broke teenager can normally get someone to buy them a six pack. But apparently young Jack thought it best to go the homemade route. Moonshine is technically any alcohol brewed illegally, though it’s generally pretty foul. According to Wikipedia, it can have a host of unsavory flavors.

  In all my life, I would never have imagined that Sean “P Diddy” Combs would ever have any illicit substances served at one of his fancy parties. Certainly not his super posh White Party, which has such specific rules as ladies being waxed and professionally manicured before they show up. But shockingly, Diddy had a plate of special brownies being passed around by waiters. Which was not good news for a desperately hungry Mark Ronson, who hadn’t eaten all day and gobbled three down before he realized something was odd.

  MARK Ronson learned to watch what he eats at P. Diddy’s famed White Parties. “I hadn’t eaten all day, and I was starving. They were coming around with this bowl of brownies, and I grabbed three of them and just started scarfing them down,” the deejay tells Paper. After that, “every lyric sounded like it was the Cookie Monster yelling in my ear, and I started feeling really [bleep]y, but I had to play through the set. I couldn’t just go up to Puffy and say, ‘Sorry, I ate a [bleep]-load of hash brownies, I can’t do your White Party.

  Poor Mark. I don’t care what kind of lifestyle you lead or whose party you’re at: when brownies are being passed around by waiters and you’re ravenous, the first place your mind is going to go to probably isn’t pot brownies. Though it sounds like Mark was so hungry he probably wouldn’t care. I love the image of Cookie Monster yelling in his ear.   Jenna Elfman compares Scientology criticism to torture of Christians

  Committed cult member Jenna Elfman sure knows how to parrot Scientology’s “poor us” talking points. She said she ignores criticism of her religion because people who haven’t bothered to pay and get harassed in order to study it aren’t capable of telling her it’s a scam and a fraud. She also compares criticism of Scientology to the Roman’s persecution of Christianity.

  “If someone starts talking to me negatively about something they’ve never actually studied that actual text of, I don’t really admire them very much because it shows they don’t have much integrity, so I just kind of ignore them,” Elfman told AAP in Sydney.

  “I’m not going to listen to gossip and hearsay about something that’s affected my life so tremendously in such a tremendously positive way.”

  Founded by American science-fiction author L Ron Hubbard in the 1950s, Scientology has received much criticism and been the butt of many jokes for its stance against modern psychiatry and belief in alien cosmologies.

  Elfman compared its treatment to the way other religions had been persecuted through the ages.

  “It’s a new religion. Historically every new religion has been [dismissed],” she said.

  “People were hanged, fed to the lions for their beliefs so this is just a modern day evolution of what happens when something new comes into our culture.

  “It is not fully understood yet.”

  And in a line that mimic’s Tom Cruise’s famous rant about how Scientologists are the authorities on everything and how they’re the only ones who can help in an emergency, she went on to basically call it a cure all:

  “I’ve seen drug addicts completely rehabilitated, I’ve seen the illiterate become literate, I’ve seen people that were so depressed and hopeless completely rehabilitate their goals in life, become happier, find partners,” she said.

  Jenna’s partner Bodhi Elfman is the guy who introduced brave ex Scientologist Jason Beghe to Scientology. Actor Beghe recorded a series of interviews earlier this year in which he detailed the way he was deceived, brainwashed and robbed by the cult. He described how you’re told that you can achieve a state of clear, in which Scientologists claim you’ll never get sick and “no longer have a reactive mind.” Beghe said that all the courses, auditing, and programs he took through Scientology damaged him psychologically and cost him over a million dollars and years of his life.

  I wonder if Jenna Elfman would accept criticism of her beloved religion from Beghe, who achieved a high status in the cult, has personal experience with it, and was even friends with her husband. It’s not gossip or hearsay coming from him. Beghe lived through it and is lucky to have survived without “committing suicide” with some exhaust pipes stuck in his bedroom window.

  Alec Baldwin calls Sarah Palin “Bible Spice”

  “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin was on David Letterman last night, and he talked about meeting Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin during his guest stint on |Saturday Night Live.” Baldwin said Palin was very nice and friendly and he called her “very game and very professional” for her appearance on SNL, which he likened to a dunk tank. He also confirmed that she’s hot in person and said “she’s a very beautiful woman.” Imitating Palin’s voice, Baldwin said that one of the first things she mentioned when she met him was that she knows one of his brothers.

  “I’ve been talking to your brother Stephen and we’ve been chatting, trying to figure out how to knock some sense into you.”

  Alec’s brother Stephen is an ardent Christian conservative. Alec told a funny story about him, and said he would hanging out with him at a restaurant and all of a sudden Stephen would look up from his soup and say all serious “You know, most of these people are going to hell.”

  Alec is an outspoken and committed Democrat. Of the upcoming election, he said he doesn’t think it’s a foregone conclusion despite the solid trend in the polls toward Obama.

  “I have a person that I want to win obviously, and I don’t think that’s a mystery. On the other hand, if he doesn’t win - if the other guy wins - if the guy who’s running with Bible Spice wins. [crowd claps and Paul Shaffer repeats 'Bible Spice']

  “If John McBush and Bible Spice win, we have to find a way to come together as a country, because we can’t let it be the way it’s been the last 8 years where there’s been this acrimony and this bitterness. We have to find a way somehow to do that.

  “But I do think that if Obama wins we will have seen something wonderful happen in our lifetime politically, and it’s been a long time since we’ve had that happen in this country.”

  The third season of “30 Rock” premieres tonight at 9:30 on NBC.

  Madonna’s biographer: Guy and Madonna only speak through their lawyers

  Hello! Magazine has some insight into the Madonna and Guy Ritchie divorce from biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli, who wrote Madonna: An Intimate Biography, published in 2001. It’s generally reviewed as a well balanced but somewhat sensational take on Madonna’s career and personality, gleaned from interviews with friends and colleagues. Madonna did not participate in the book.

  Taraborrelli lets us know how Madonna and Guy are moving toward a monetary and custody agreement after nearly eight years of marriage. He says that they’re not speaking and are only communicating through their lawyers. He does support the common view of Madonna as a control freak, but claims she’s trying to go easier on the kids after the separation. This sounds like more positive spin from Madonna’s camp, but it’s still interesting to read.

  Nowhere near a settlement
  There was a great deal of haggling about [custody] last week, with Madonna upping Guy’s settlement to more than £20 million in hopes that he would acquiese. Sources say that negotiations are still going strong between the Ritchies and that they are nowhere near a settlement.

  Madonna and Guy don’t talk and only communicate through their lawyers
  Madonna and Guy are not even speaking to each other. They communicate only through lawyers.

  Children wonder what will happen next
  “I think the kids’ main question these days is, ‘What’s going to happen now?’” says a confidant of the former couple. “Madonna used to always have the answer to that question. She always had the weeks and even months planning uot in advance for them. This is the first time in the children’s lives that when they ask what is going to happen next, no one really has an answer. Madonna doesn’t know - and neither does Guy. So, yes, it’s a scary time for everyone.”

  Madonna is trying to be less strict
  “In the Ritchie household, Madonna had always been the bad cop to Guy’s good cop. She was tough while Guy was playful. So, Madonna and Lourdes have sometimes been at odds.”

  Now that Guy is not in the picture in the same way, the method by which Madonna parents Lourdes will have to change. I’m going to have to give her much more latitude, now,” she admitted to a source last week.

  Rocco talks to his dad every day, misses him
  Lourdes [12]… is taking more of caretaking role with Rocco, eight. “She is being gentler to him,” says another source…

  Certainly because of his age and the fact that Guy is his natural father, the divorce is bound to be difficult on the eight-year-old…

  Rocco speaks to Guy every day, as does Lourdes. One source said: “I have actually been present to see Madonna hand a mobil to Rocco and say, ‘Call your father. I know he misses you.”

  As for David, three… “Well, he’s a toddler,” says the source. “He has no idea what’s going on.”

  Madonna didn’t like Guy’s friends, they don’t have many common friends left
  “Madonna was never very found of Guy’s pals. She found the majority of them uninteresting and dull. She even used the word ‘common’ to describe them. And, for his part, Guy always felt the conversation was forced and pretentious with many of Madonna’s friends. So, no, they never really commingled their friends.”

  On their futures with other partners
  “[Madonna] has always been very vague about her relationship with [A-Rod],” says someone who knows Madonna quite well. “Whenever I have asked her about him, a huge grin comes over her face but she never really shares much.”

  As for Guy, the director’s friend in London says: “Look, he has been unhappy in his marriage for a long time. He needs affection, too, like most men. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in something romantic very soon - much sooner than Madonna. My sense is that Madonna doesn’t need a man. Not really. But Guy is used to being coupled up.

  Taraborrelli’s source thinks the divorce will “get nasty” and adds that Madonna and Guy have a lot of animosity toward each other but says that they will try to work it out for the sake of their children.

  Yesterday the news came out that Madonna had a list of rules drawn up and posted on the wall from her Kabbalah advisors on how she and Guy were to conduct themselves as husband and wife. It included provisions for sex, how they were to argue, and that they were supposed to study Kabbalah materials together several hours a day. When Guy got out of line, Madonna is said to have nagged him by saying “contract, contract.” It’s surprising these two even lasted as long as they did, and I just hope for Guy’s sake that he gets a hefty contract and a very easy-going hot young girlfriend after all his trouble.

  John Mayer blogs for the Huffington Post about his hope for Obama

  John Mayer has penned an article for the Huffington Post about his hope for the future of America under presidential hopeful Barack Obama. Like a lot of things that Mayer does, it seems unnecessarily self-referential, but he at least keeps it short. He does make some good points about what Obama’s candidacy means for our faith in the way things can turn around for the country:

  I was 23 years old when the nation was attacked on September 11, 2001. I can remember hearing pundits say “this changes everything” and “things will never be the same.” Obviously it was a tragic and traumatic event, but that sentiment has carried on through the better part of my twenties. If you were 43 years old on that day, I would imagine it was a difficult concept to get your head around as well, but if you were a young adult just entering his or her individual life, there was an added twist; how can you process the idea of everything changing and things never being the same when you have no point of reference for what “everything” and “the same” is? I was just beginning to put my hands on the world around me, to interact and engage with it, and to actualize the dream of being an adult in a free society. To wait in line for 23 years only to have the “sorry, future canceled” sign flipped in my face was depressing, to say the least.

  The social and political narrative of the last eight years, if you’re a young adult, has been “you are the first generation of the second half of the rest of human existence.” That’s a huge psychological undertaking, and I believe it’s one that will someday be diagnosed on a massive scale as having led to a kind of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (Something has to explain away our premature obsession with 1980s nostalgia.) My generation has come to know itself as the generation that should have seen the good days, my, were they spectacular, now take off your shoes and place them on the belt.

  What Barack Obama says to me is these days are good for something. Just when I’d thought my only role as an adult was to help shoulder the nation through its darkest days (known to us as “the rest of them”), Obama gives me the feeling that I could be alive to witness one of the most brilliant upturns in a country’s history. Imagine that — a young adult in this day and age being given something to someday brag to his children about having being alive to witness. What a concept.

  That’s why hope is a worthwhile commodity. To those who question whether hope is a tangible product worth building a campaign around, I’d say take a look at despair and how powerful that has been in reshaping how people think and live. I believe the definition of the “hope” that Barack Obama enthuses operates on the unspoken thesis that there has to be a polar opposite to the despair of 9/11. Because if we accept that there’s not, the will to live becomes forever altered. To adults who will vote for him, Barack Obama represents a return to prosperity. To the youth, he represents an introduction to it.

  I’m optimistic for a future with Barack Obama as president, but cautiously so. To me Obama represents someone who may help to bring back some of the optimism and prosperity we had as a nation under president Clinton. I’m a bit older than Mayer and I remember Clinton’s presidency fondly. Clinton had a way of speaking and framing situations that made it seem like everything would work out for America - and it did. Sure we had some hard times under Clinton, and a sex scandal, but it was also a time of great progress. Some might argue that Clinton was just in the right place during the Internet boom, but he was also a strong, smart leader who made us feel better by just talking to us. Obama has that ability too, and you can’t underestimate how powerful it can be when a President charts out a positive and productive future for a country.

  It’s not about me, though, or my generation being disappointed in the leaders of the past. It’s about what we’re all going to do together to make things better. And that’s exactly what Obama is saying.
