Brad Pitt, who has dedicated much of his time the last five years to rebuild the area of New Orleans devastated by hurricane Katrina, headed back the Lower 9th Ward on the fifth anniversary of the disaster to call attention to the work that still needs to be done.
“We chose this spot because it was the iconic location of everything that was wrong with the rescue, the recovery,” Pitt told NBC’s Brian Williams last night, about the spot where his Make It Right Foundation has been building green homes for residents left homeless by the hurricane.
“It was unfathomable,” he said. “I mean, just– you had no idea that there were families and here. It was just wiped clean. Except for the occasional pile up of homes and– on top of homes.”
But Pitt is trying to change that, having built 50 of a planned 150 green homes for the people of the city where he occasionally calls home (he and Angelina Jolie have a house in the French Quarter.)
But Brad is modest about his contribution to the rebuilt community. “It’s not mine, it’s theirs,” he said. “I see them having barbecues out in the [backyards] and I’m just thrilled.”
Still a lot more work to be done but at least it's a start!
