A new tell-all book about legendary star Frank Sinatra claims the singer attempted suicide twice over his tumultuous love affair with screen siren Ava Gardner. Celebrity author Tom Santopietro details the crooner’s alleged internal struggles in Sinatra in Hollywood, which hits bookstores this month (November).
In the book, Santopietro claims Sinatra cut his wrists in friend Jimmy Van Heusen’s New York apartment in 1953, the year the pair initially split. Sinatra married 29-year-old Gardner in 1951, making her the second of his four wives.
A publishing source tells the National Enquirer, “The author reveals that Van Heusen’s unexpected return saved the singer from bleeding to death.” He adds, “Sinatra’s first attempt at suicide had occurred a year earlier after yet another debilitating fight with Ava. He inhaled gas from the kitchen stove in a different friend’s apartment.
“The book also says Ava had two abortions while they were together - without consulting Frank, saying that a sane lifestyle necessary for raising children just wasn’t possible with him. ” The couple divorced in 1957.
Author Christopher Kennedy Lawford shares celebrity rehab stories in his new book Moments of Clarity. Lawford (who is Peter Lawford’s son and a Kennedy cousin) weights the selection of these confessionals toward entertainment-industry acquaintances. The epiphanies in these engrossing oral histories, gathered by Lawford who also wrote about his own recovery in “Symptoms of Withdrawal”, are engrossing. Drummer Dallas Taylor’s moment of clarity came when he stabbed himself in the stomach after freebasing with a homeless guy. For memoirist Susan Cheever, it was watching her daughter drink milk. For actor Richard Dreyfuss, it was realizing that the little girl who appeared to him in a vision at a cocaine-fueled orgy was his unborn daughter. Jamie Lee Curtis’s moments came when her Brazilian shaman called her on her pill-popping). singer Collins - now sober for 13 years - reveals, “I had been drinking around the clock for four years. My instrument - the voice that had brought me success and saved my sanity - was coming apart.” Remembering the moment before she checked into rehab, she adds: “I brought a jelly jar of vodka and drank it in the airport bathroom.”
If you're not interested in publishing or Christianity, you may not be aware of William P. Young's wildly successful inspirational novel The Shack. On a marketing budget of exactly zero, this book — about a man who visits the spot of his daughter's murder and finds God — is now common course material for Christians across the U.S. With that big an audience, you have to wonder about the message the book contains. I read it so you don't have to.
While he's saving two of his children from drowning, sedate Mack loses track of his daughter Missy, who is subsequently abducted and murdered by a serial killer within a matter of days. Suffering from what he calls 'The Great Sadness', Mack gets a note from God and heads out with a cooler and a shotgun to where his daughter was raped and murdered , not sure what is waiting for him.
After a pep-talk from God about how she is in his corner, the novel does take a slight risk in addressing the institution of religion and church. While never not stressing the importance of the institution, the book does have some New Agey-type ideas about Young's interpretation of Christianity, and he's had a little backlash on that account from strict believers:

Kevin Bacon is partnering with Showtime that centers on the man who would eventually assassinate Abraham Lincoln. “The Booths” will revolve around actor-brothers Edwin, Junius Brutus Jr. and John Wilkes Booth and their dysfunctional relationship in the years prior to Lincoln’s assassination. They were sons of British Shakespearean actor Junius Brutus Booth and actress Mary Ann Holmes. The three brothers performed together just once, in a New York showing of “Julius Caesar” in 1864. John Wilkes Booth eventually became a rabid defender of the South and clashed with his brother Edwin. John, of course, shot Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre while the President was watching the play “Our American Cousin” on April 14, 1865.
Robert Wagner has an autobiography “Pieces of My Heart,” coming out tomorrow (Sept. 23nd). The book written with Scott Eyman, looks like a terrific read if your into the golden years of Hollywood. Wagner’s life is very rich and he rubbed elbows and tells stories about many of Hollywoods’ most iconic stars. He was mentored by Spencer Tracy and befriended by golden-era greats including Gary Cooper, James Cagney and Bette Davis. He dated everyone from Debbie Reynolds to Joan Collins.

Frequent drug user and sometime British rocker Pete Doherty is putting together a book. The Babyshambles frontman will reportedly capture “the euphoric highs and the depressing lows” of the group since they formed in 2004. But to spice things up the book will also focus on Doherty’s troubled love life, including his split from supermodel Kate Moss, and his struggle to kick his drug habit. Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek insists there will be other aspects to the book besides Doherty’s personnal struggles, for fans to look forward to. Ficek says the book will include a different perspective from each member on past events and life in Babyshambles. He says:

And just when he was fading from our nightmares, Dustin Diamond whose high-pitched nerdy exploits as Samuel “Screech” Powers on Saved by the Bell is digging for more pop-culture gold. NY Mag’s Vulture reports that Screech is writing a “Saved by the Bell” tell-all called “Behind the Bell.” Sounds like Screech is selling out his Saved By the Bell co-stars big time.
