Opting for a low-key Texas wedding rather than saying her “I do’s” at the White House, Jenna Welch Bush is officially married to Henry Chase Hager.
The first daughter of a sitting United States president to marry in 16 years, Jenna and Henry “exchanged vows just before sundown in a lakeside ceremony at President Bush’s secluded 1,600-acre Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford, Texas.”
First Daughter Jenna Bush got hitched. She married Henry Hager, whom she met while work on her father's 2004 re-electiion campaign. Well at least something nice came out of that. Dick Cheney managed not to shoot anybody in the face during the wedding.
The couple were married just before sundown beside a lake at the President's 1,600 acre Prairie Chapel ranch in Crawford, Texas. The bride and her mother Laura Bush wore Oscar De La Renta, who is a personal friend of the family. The got married in front of a limestone cross and altar which will remain as a permanent part of the property. Jenna's twin sister Barbara served as the maid of honor.
Jenna's the first daughter of an active President to be married in 16 years.
"This is a joyous occasion for our family, as we celebrate the happy life ahead of (Jenna) and her husband, Henry," the president said in his weekly radio broadcast Saturday morning. "It's also a special time for Laura, who this Mother's Day weekend will watch a young woman we raised together walk down the aisle."
Wasn't Jenna a crazy drunken slut when she was younger? Way to clean up, babe.
The White House has released official photos of Jenna Bush’s wedding ceremony and reception. She looks beautiful and her special day seems like a perfect mix of elegant touches with a down home celebration. Jenna, 26, and her new husband, Henry Hager, 30, are thought to be heading off to a European honeymoon. The new couple will return home to a two bedroom townhouse in Baltimore, Maryland. Jenna has a job as a schoolteacher in Washington, DC, and Henry will work for an energy company in Maryland. Best wishes to the new couple.

There was a very good editorial by Diane Roberts on NPR today about how Jenna missed a chance at a wedding that would have been as close to a royal occasion as is possible in America. Roberts cited some Presidents’ daughters who chose to have White House weddings that were attended by the press and followed closely by millions of Americans. If Jenna would have had that type of wedding it might have provided her lame duck President father a brief blip in his terrible ratings, but it also would have made her a target.
As it is, we only have one old pre-released photo of Henry and Jenna and the details about their wedding. They chose to go the Beyoncé and Jay-Z route and haven’t even released a wedding portrait yet. (Update: Here’s a link to the photos of Jenna’s wedding)

NPR reminds us that the most extravagant White House wedding in recent history was President Nixon’s daughter Tricia’s live wedding broadcast from the Rose Garden. Tricia Nixon married liberal Harvard law student Edward Finch Cox on June 12, 1971, when the Vietnam War was still in full force. Cox was featured on the cover of Life Magazine twice after her wedding, which Life called “akin to American royalty.”
In contrast, Dorothy Bush, Jenna’s aunt, got married in a super secret ceremony in 1992 at Camp David when Jenna’s grandfather was President.
An aid to President HW Bush explains in part why Jenna chose a more low-key event: “If they’d have gone on TV, the wedding would have been shown all over the world and Jenna Bush would have been an international celebrity — and she would have been a target. They’re preparing the transition to private life and they’re not particularly interested in seeing Jenna Bush become a huge celebrity.”
You understand why they didn’t have a wedding at the White House and it seems like a wise decision for them. The whole world would have made fun of Jenna instead of her dad for once.

President Bush's parents George and Barbara just want what's best for their WASPy descendants, particularly on the occasion of the wedding of their beloved, dignified granddaughter Jenna. That's why they don't want David Lauren, son of Ralph Lauren, to attend. See, David has been dating Jenna's cousin Lauren Bush for three whole years, and still hasn't proposed marriage. "Where's the ring, David?" one source near the family told the Daily News. Also, he's an ancient 36 and she's an innocent 22. And, no doubt worst of all for the patrician Bushes, David Lauren is a Jew, and his Jewy-ness might infect precious Lauren:

It's hard to know where to start with the new book plugged on Larry King Live tonight by authors Jenna Bush and her mom Laura, the first lady. First of all, it's for kids who hate reading. Very meta, but maybe not the best business model for publisher HarperCollins. Also, it's got a character named Tyrone, who is eight or nine. Tyrone is also white, possibly the first white kid to be named Tyrone, ever. Jenna said Tyrone is a "composite," which she explains to mean he is based on one particular student taught by her mom. One would have hoped Jenna learned the meaning of the word "composite" while serving as a co-teacher in a DC charter school, but after drinking her way around the world maybe the first daughter has found her brain doesn't work as well as it used to. This is sad: Tony Snow, the former White House spokesman and newly-hired CNN talking head, was taken to the hospital this morning and canceled a speech at Eastern Washington University as well as an appearance on CNN. Snow has been battling cancer since a 2005 and left his White House job in 2007, saying he needed to earn more money. His cancer, he said, was not behind his departure, and in fact was in remission. Just this Monday, Snow said on a radio show that "the stuff I have right now is not all that rough" and that a recent CAT scan showed his tumors weren't growing. Snow is maintaining an optimistic outlook, and trying to live a normal life. But, for the moment at least, he can't. Whatever one thinks of Snow's work on behalf of the Bush administration, he is a human being, with a very human desire to keep working, earn some money for his family and focus on the life still before him, rather than spend time contemplating some of the darker questions somewhere down the road. Page Six's item earlier this week about first daughter Barbara Bush's attendance at a New York Rangers game, and the accompanying wholly unsubstantiated speculation that maybe she's dating a Rangers player, prompted a sports blogger to engage in some journalism (take that, Washington Post!). He dug deep in the photo archives and uncovered the haunting connection between Barbara Bush and the hockey team: Style.com writer, socialite, and Fifth Column Of The Gaydom Derek Blasberg!
Blasberg, who was once implicated in conspiracy theories over who's really pulling New York's socialite strings, has appeared in a couple of pictures palling around with the younger Bush—including one of them sitting next to each other at a New York Rangers game:
So what conclusions can we draw from this weighty evidence?
1. Derek Blasberg likes hockey.
2. Barbara Bush likes hockey, or at least likes attending hockey games in the company of Derek Blasberg.
3. As well as doing some other stuff about town with Derek Blasberg.
4. Hockey may or may not become a standard event for the socialites of New York to attend.
5. Blasberg and Bush have not been photographed together at a Knicks game.
6. The Knicks suck way more than the Rangers.

The Hollywood Reporter posted the first scene of the widely-leaked script to Oliver Stone's George W. Bush biopic, W, which is about to start filming. Reading it, its easy to see why some historians are calling the film an inaccurate caricature. It's hard to imagine even Bush, not to mention Dick Cheney, seeming like as much of a strutting fraternity brother as he does at the end of this White House scene:

Oliver Stone's George W. Bush biopic, W, is at times more like a Saturday Night Live skit than history, according to some Bush biographers who reviewed the script on behalf of the Hollywood Reporter. "It leaves with the impression that the White House is run as fraternity house with no reverence for hierarchy, the office itself or for the implications of policy," one said. What left that impression? Was it the part where Bush and his buddies locked Colin Powell out of a room as prank, or when Bush rearranges his presidential schedule based on what's on ESPN, or the scene where he practices a parachute landing in the White House pool?
It sounds like, not-so-shockingly, Stone may have succeeded in making Bush into something of a caricature. Yes, he gives people nicknames, but did he really call Colin Powell "Baloon Foot?"
Yes, the invasion of Iraq was cavalier and underplanned, but was it really discussed like a football game? Yes, Bush was an alcoholic, but did he really crash his plane under the influence of alcohol?
In many cases, the historians answer, "No, he did not." But Stone needs to make money at a time when political films are not doing well. That means controversy.
It looks like the most controversial scene might have nothing to do with Bush's wild side but with the idea that he can be reflective and regretful:

Well I guess someone has finally tamed the Bush wild child, Jenna. Gone are the days of careless abandonment, sticking tongues out at photographers and violating state alcoholic beverage laws. Do I care that both of those incidents happened over six years ago? Of course not. Good journalism is about rehashing the worst at the best point in someone's life.
