On a marketing budget of exactly zero, this book — about a man who visits the spot of his daughter's murder and finds God — is now common course material for Christians across the U.S. With that big an audience, you have to wonder about the message the book contains. I read it so you don't have to.
The 248 page novel was written for William P. Young's close family, and after having no luck selling the manuscript to agents, he and a few friends self-published last summer. That was a good idea, because the book started gaining a cult audience almost immediately. Now it's a staple of most Christian communities, the subject of a film adaptation, and can safely be described as a phenomenon.
Crossing Richard Matheson's What Dreams May Come with standard inspirational fare like Way of the Peaceful Warrior and Sophie's World, The Shack is written briskly and intelligently for a novel of this kind.
While he's saving two of his children from drowning, sedate Mack loses track of his daughter Missy, who is subsequently abducted and murdered by a serial killer within a matter of days. Suffering from what he calls 'The Great Sadness', Mack gets a note from God and heads out with a cooler and a shotgun to where his daughter was raped and murdered , not sure what is waiting for him.
Not to spoil anything, but God is waiting for him, in the persona of a black woman named Papa, an Asian woman, and a Middle Eastern man:
He then glanced past her and noticed that a third person had emerged from the cabin, this one a man. He appeared Middle Eastern and was dressed like a laborer, complete with tool belt and gloves. He stood easily, leaning against the door jamb with arms crossed in front of him, wearing jeans covered in wood dust and a plaid shirt with sleeves rolled just above the elbows, revealing well muscled forearms.
So yeah, Jesus was looking pretty good. Not to be outdone, the black female God's never far away at The Shack, and she knows how to get down and flirt when necessary:

After a pep-talk from God about how she is in his corner, the novel does take a slight risk in addressing the institution of religion and church. While never not stressing the importance of the institution, the book does have some New Agey-type ideas about Young's interpretation of Christianity, and he's had a little backlash on that account from strict believers:
Actually the controversy has been fairly minimal...just vocal. Western believers have a difficult time with fiction in general. Eastern traditions (Christian traditions) are much more open to icons and images. I think there are as many reasons why the story stirs up folks as there are motives of the heart. I am sure some are feeling the need to protect and defend God and that is their identity in part, some are nervous about their power in the lives of others, some are just fearful...lots of reasons.
Is The Shack bad for people to be reading? Not in the least. While it doesn't entirely resist racial stereotypes in its colorful depiction of the Holy Trinity, this is a white guy's book, that was gonna happen.

In his just-released book, The Man Who Ate the World, restaurant critic Jay Rayner explores the oft-overblown luxury dining of the world. In a scene from New York, the man behind the Zagat Survey—Mr. Tim Zagat himself—takes him on a whirlwind tour. It's fun to watch brash American Zagat embarrass Rayner, a Brit with a sense of propriety. Who do they run into at Meatpacking District monstrosity Buddakan other than America's favorite "One Tough Cop," private investigator Bo Dietl—who tells them that he came for the food, but stayed for the "pussy":
"He leads me into a pan-Asian restaurant called Buddakan, which is exactly how I imagine hell would look if the devil went into catering. It is a grotesquely large restaurant of bare brick walls, and over inflated chandeliers, made up of interlocking echoey chambers reached by huge staircases, and I can’t help but think that somewhere is a final staircase which leads to a fiery pit, full of horne’d beasts, serving only ‘Belarus Home Cooking’.
We shuffle through the crowd. ‘A girl could get pregnant on the way to the bar here,’ Zagat barks into my ear, above the noise. Young people wolf down plates of chilli rock shrimp and spiced tuna tartar as though their lives depend upon it and my ears consider haemorrhaging in time to the music.
Suddenly Zagat spots some friends at a corner table. He introduces me to ‘everyone’s favourite old time cop,’ a late middle aged man, with stubble over his fat-pleated chin. Bo Dietl, a former New York policeman, is reputed to have arrested more felons during his career than any other, and is now a private investigator. With him is a media-friendly Harvard law professor who shares his name with the playwright Arthur Miller, and a silver-haired class action lawyer called Mel Weiss who is under investigation by the Federal government for allegedly paying plaintiffs to bring law suits.
They shout questions about restaurants and food at Zagat, who shouts back. Dietl makes apologetic noises about their choice of restaurant that night.
Zagat waves them away. ‘You're not here for haute cuisine,’ he says to Dietl.
The former cop grins up at him. ‘No. We’re here for pussy.’
Zagat, startled, rocks back on his heels.
‘Oh yeah,’ he says, awkwardly.
I can’t help but look down the table at the two young women, wearing shiny dresses in primary colours with plunging necklines, who are sitting with these old men."

After dinner at STK last night, the soccer superstar made a surprise appearance at Villa. Coincidentally, Paris happened to hit up the same club - and apparently took quite a shine to Cristiano!
"Every girl in the club was checking [Cristiano] out, but Paris couldn't take her eyes off him," a spy told the Daily Mail. "The moment he arrived, she went over to his private table."

In a statement just given exclusively to X17, Paris' rep denies the whole scene ever went took place, claiming his client merely popped into Coco de Ville with her aunt and uncle momentarily and spent the entire time with her family. He claims that Paris isn't a soccer fan and wouldn't even recognize him if they met. (Psst, Paris - he's this guy!)
Paris' rep also points out the heiress' strong relationship with Benji Madden, claiming that the rocker will be spending a lot more time with his lady love now that he's back home from his tour. And, he alleges, the story seems to be coming from the same sources behind those false allegations that Paris got socked in the eye last week.
Oh, and as for the oh-so-titillating detail about Paris pushing her girls together to better attract Cristiano's attention? We'll just let her flack speak for himself:

Rumors continue to be bandied about that Fight Club, a novel by Chuck Palahniuk and later a film by David Fincher, could become a Broadway musical. The tale of two men (SPOILER: It's one guy) who start a brawling, anarchistic little gentlemens club that quickly gets out of hand seems like a strange fit for the singing stage, but the recent critical lauding of both the bare bones Broadway revival and hyper-violent film versions of Steven Sondheim's Sweeney Todd may be encouraging producers that it could work. Reports have even suggested that Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor might be writing the score. A film (and book) with a dark cult following, made into a musical by a musician with an even darker cult following? Seems like a strange fit for the bubblegum cult of Broadway. I suggest taking it to The Atlantic, where more off-beat shows like Spring Awakening get a chance to stretch their legs. [EW.com]

I'm not saying gaming news should become as mature a genre of journalism as politics, business, and world news. It's still a new field and will always be as subjective as covering music or film, with the accompanying celebrity culture. But now that women outnumber men in online gaming, party games like Rock Band appeal to both sexes, and casual games (popular among women and adults) are the fastest-growing segment of the gaming industry, gaming journalism should be an all-inclusive genre. Why does it still pander to a core audience of straight young males with outdated misogynistic material, to the boredom and frustration of all of us who can get laid outside of World of Warcraft?
I'm not talking merely about tech and gaming journalists who write about sex and porn. Wired is doing its job when it analyzes the business of porn; Gizmodo is just playing when its staff leaves the CES tech conference for the AVN porn conference next door to poke fun at the dildos. Gaming journalism doesn't need to sanitize itself; gaming gets dirty and so should the writing. Plus, well, I wanna read about sex.
What needs to stop is the boy's club, in which women are only featured as sex objects. Forget being offended by it; I'm just sick of it -- if I want titillation, I'll go to porn or, you know, an actual woman. Maybe I'll read Esquire, where they at least pretend to respect an actress's work before showing off her calves. See, it's not just that gaming journalism is obsessed with sexy women, it's that the obsession takes such an awkward form. The practice is found all over the industry. Some examples:
The industry is addicted. Like a GOP presidential candidate, they're too afraid of losing the base to appeal to normal people with reasonable options. No wonder they're losing attention to mainstream coverage (who says GQ can't review video games?) and sites like Penny Arcade, a biting comic and review site in which a pre-teen girl -- the niece of one of the authors -- is the maturest, most capable gamer. Gawker Media's gaming site Kotaku, says editor Brian Crecente, goes out of its way to stop boy's-club coverage. Both sites have enjoyed years of rising traffic.
Sure, it's probably unhealthy to train men to treat women as sex objects. Screw that, it's unhealthy to the industry to alienate half its audience, and likely most of the other half too, particularly the part that's not living in its Mom's basement with little disposable income. We're not aching for a flash of tit from a girl made of polygons; we're not desperate to hear that our favorite girl from Bang Brothers wants to cuddle with Raiden from Mortal Kombat. We have money, we consider ourselves normal and maybe even cool, and we want to buy video games that don't suck.
