Frankie Muniz, $3 million
Born: Dec. 5, 1985
The former Emmy-winning child star of Malcolm In the Middle is pursuing a new career–as a race car driver. This year he competed in the Champ Car Atlantic Series, logging over a dozen races. Not that he’s given up acting entirely. This past year saw him appear in an episode of CBS’ dramatic series Criminal Minds. Look for him in the upcoming coming-of-age comedies My Sexiest Year and Parental Guidance Suggested.
19. Mandy Moore, $3.5 million
Born: April 10, 1984
The actress-singer has following the lead of fellow aging ‘tween stars Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen and Hilary Duff by launching her own fashion line called Mblem. In addition to co-starring in five films in 2007, the frequent magazine cover girl released her fifth studio album, Wild Hope, in June.
18. Lindsay Lohan, $3.5 million
Born: July 2, 1986
Too bad starlets don’t get paid per headline. Despite a slew of legal and on-set troubles, La Lohan squeezed in two films, Georgia Rule and I Know Who Killed Me, both box office duds, during our time frame. She also booked print campaigns for Jill Stuart and Miu Miu, as well as appearance fees before being sidelined by her third stint in rehab this year. Dogged by speculation about her insurability, and a lousy box office track record for her last four major releases, Lohan’s commercial viability is in serious doubt.
17. Miley Cyrus, $3.5 million
Born: Nov. 23, 1992
The daughter of former country phenom Billy Ray Cyrus is the alter ego of Disney’s Hannah Montana. In addition to her starring role in that hit series, Cyrus earned income from the release of a Hannah Montana soundtrack, plus a double disc featuring her own original recordings. Both debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Expect to see Cyrus’ income rise in the next year, thanks to her sold-out concert tour, which kicked off in October. With tickets fetching in excess of $2,500 a pop–more than seats at Bruce Springsteen or the Eagles concerts–the Cyrus tour is the event of the year.
16. Rupert Grint, $4 million
Born: Aug. 24, 1988
The ginger-topped Harry Potter co-star saw his salary increase substantially for this summer’s installment, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which has to date grossed $938 million worldwide. Playing Potter pal Ron Weasley should set Grint up for life. He’s already filming Half-Blood Prince, with the film adaptation of the final novel, Deathly Hallows, scheduled to follow.
15. Emma Watson, $4 million
Born: Apr. 15, 1990
Her coy suggestions to the press two years ago that she may need a break from the Harry Potter film franchise, in which she plays Hermione Granger, no doubt sent Warner Brothers into convulsions. For the last three flicks, including last summer’s Order of the Phoenix, she scored a substantial raise, earning an estimated $4 million per film. In July she confessed to Parade magazine that she has enough money now to never work again, adding, “but I would never want that.”
14. Dakota Fanning, $4 million
Born: Feb. 23, 1994
Commanding as much as $3 million for major motion pictures–more than many of Hollywood’s most promising starlets–this pint-sized prodigy boasts credits in some of the biggest box office hits of the past few years, including War of the Worlds and Charlotte’s Web. More recently Fanning has been taking edgier roles in smaller pictures. Last year she drew scads of very-adult criticism for her role in Hounddog, an indie flick in which her character is raped. She’ll appear in at least three films next year, including the animated fantasy Coraline and ensemble crime drama Winged Creatures, co-starring Forest Whitaker.
13. Mischa Barton, $4.5 million
Born: Jan. 24, 1986
Since leaving Fox’s hit teen drama The O.C. in 2006, the boho actress has become an endorsement darling, booking deals with Keds, Bebe and Visa. Among her films slated for release next year is You and I (Finding tATu), about lesbian lovers drawn into the Russian underworld. She’ll reclaim her high-school beauty queen mantle in next summer’s Assassination of a High School President, co-starring Bruce Willis.
12. Scarlett Johansson, $5 million
Born: Nov. 22, 1984
The sultry actress is set to appear in at least three films next year, including Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, her third flick with the director. Though her last pass at a high-profile film adaptation of a best seller went bust–this summer’s The Nanny Diaries grossed a measly $35 million–Johansson will nonetheless appear in He’s Just Not Into You, slated for release in August. Last year Johansson landed endorsement deals with Louis Vuitton and Reebok, plus an enviable role in Justin Timberlake’s video for “What Goes Around (Comes Around).”
11. Carrie Underwood, $7 million
Born: March 10, 1983
The fourth season winner of American Idol has become the show’s most successful alumnus. Her debut album, Some Hearts, was the best-selling album of 2006 in all genres, selling over 8 million copies worldwide (and edging out Kelly Clarkson’s past efforts) and landing her two Grammys. The fifth single off the album, “Before He Cheats,” virtually monopolized both the pop and country airwaves this past summer (and buoyed sales of Louisville Slugger baseball bats, no doubt). Her sophomore album, Carnival Ride, was released in October.
10. Keira Knightley, $9 million
Born: March 26, 1985
Knightley became a bona fide star as a result of her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, though she wasn’t paid like one. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer locked her in to the first two films at scale; Knightley finally finagled a raise, to $5 million, for this summer’s At World’s End. The new face of Chanel, Knightley recently wrapped filming on The Edge of Love, about poet Dylan Thomas’ lovers, with Sienna Miller. In May Knightley won a $6,000 libel award against The Daily Mail after the British paper insinuated the reed-thin actress was anorexic.
9. Carmelo Anthony, $10 million
Born: May 29, 1984
Anthony took his game to a new level last season as he finished second in the NBA in scoring to Kobe Bryant. He averaged career highs in points, assists, rebounds and steals. This year Anthony kicked off a five-year, $80 million contract with the Denver Nuggets that he signed in the summer of 2006. His biggest endorsement deal is a six-year contract he signed with Nike when he entered the league in 2003, worth $3 million annually.
8. Avril Lavigne, $12 million
Born: Sept. 27, 1984
The decidedly less-sullen Canadian songstress released her third album, The Best Damn Thing, in April; to date the Billboard-topping album has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. And in a nod to the value of the international music market, “Girlfriend,” the album’s catchy first single, was recorded in seven additional languages, including Mandarin and German. The video for that song is the second most-watched video in history on YouTube.com.
7. Hilary Duff, $12 million
Born: Sept. 28, 1987
The pop star-actress-’tween merchandise mogul has replaced the Olsen Twins as your teenage daughter’s favorite. Her Stuff by Hilary Duff line of apparel and accessories is sold at Kohl’s, Target and Claire’s. Duff also licenses her name to footwear company Candie’s and Electronic Arts, which made her a character in the Sims videogame franchise. In April, she released her sixth studio album, Dignity, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard pop charts. Look for her in next spring’s action flick War, Inc., opposite John Cusack
6. Daniel Radcliffe, $15 million
Born: July 23, 1989
Better known as the title character of the Harry Potter film franchise, Radcliffe generated a media frenzy this year after he appeared onstage nude in a West End revival of Equus. The fifth Potter film, this summer’s The Order of the Phoenix, grossed $938 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of the year. Since his 2001 foray into wizardry at age 12, both Radcliffe and his paycheck have matured remarkably. The actor was offered a reported $145,000 for The Sorcerer’s Stone six years ago. His most recent role earned an estimated $14 million
5. Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen, $17 million each
Born: June 13, 1986
The petite twins lord over Dualstar, the largest star-driven ‘tween merchandising empire on the planet outside of Disney. Mary-Kate and Ashley merchandise retails at Wal-Mart; their new high-end Elizabeth & James sportswear is available at Neiman Marcus. Not that the twins have given up acting. Mary-Kate has an extended role on Showtime’s Weeds, and generated headlines for her on-camera kiss with Ben Kingsley in the Sundance film The Wackness. Ashley is filming The Informers with Winona Ryder.
4. Michelle Wie, $19 million
Born: Oct. 11, 1989
Wie showed incredible promise in 2006, finishing in the top five in three of the four Grand Slam events. The only other golfer to do that: Tiger Woods. But this year injuries often kept the 17-year-old wunderkind off the course. In the fall, she enrolled at Stanford where she is not eligible to play on the golf team because of her professional status. With endorsement deals worth $16 million a year, she shouldn’t have a problem with the university’s $33,000 annual tuition.
3. Maria Sharapova, $23 million
Born: April 19, 1987
Tennis’ “It” girl struggled with injuries in 2007, winning only one tournament and banking $1.7 million on the court. That’s down from five tourney wins and $3.8 million in prize money the previous year. Not to worry, Sharapova’s endorsement portfolio is one of the strongest in sports. This year she added Pepsi as a sponsor to an already impressive roster that includes Nike, Canon, Colgate-Palmolive and Motorola.
2. Reggie Bush, $24 million
Born: March 2, 1985
Bush entered the NFL last year with a Heisman Trophy and a scintillating game that had companies lining up to have them sponsor their products. Deals with Adidas, Subway, Pepsi and EA Sports net Bush $5 million annually. His big money comes from his contract with the New Orleans Saints, spanning six years and worth as much as $62 million. Last year Bush earned $19 million in base salary and bonuses from the deal.
1. LeBron James, $27 million
Born: Dec. 30, 1984
King James led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first conference title ever this year. When not on the court, James oversees construction of his 35,000-square-foot home outside of Cleveland, which includes a bowling alley, casino and barber shop. This year the cycling aficionado also acquired a minority stake in Cannondale, manufacturer of high-performance bicycles.
LA Times columnist Patrick Goldstein used his blog yesterday for the entertaining purpose of viciously mocking Variety and its Hollywood fixture editor, Peter Bart. Mocking them for being poor! This column is awesome for the following reasons: because media outlets don't usually air their dirty laundry like this; because Peter Bart and Variety certainly deserve the mocking; and most of all because Patrick Goldstein seems totally unconcerned that his own paper does the same exact thing he criticizes Variety for, and that that very thing keeps him employed.
