The album chart isn't the only thing country cutie Taylor Swift is taking by storm.
She's also ripping it up on the singles charts!
With the song White Horse, the 18-year old wonder scored her sixth top 20 debut - just this year alone!!!!!!
According to reports, that's a calendar-year record for any artist in the 50-year history of the chart.
She breaks the record of five, set this summer by the Jonas Brothers.
Woo hoo!
Take THAT, Joe!
This also ties her for second place with Mariah Carey and the Beatles for the most top 20 debuts in a career.
And, just one more new entry in the singles chart will put her in a three-way tie for first place with Janet Jackson and Madonna.
Also, Taylor's six debuts and seven total tracks on the Hot 100 each tie her with Miley Cyrus' "Hannah Montana" character for the most by a female artist in a single week.
We think Taylor's more impressive than Slutty Cyrus' score cause the blonde beauty wrote her own stuff!
Congrats, Taylor!
Keep it up!

Rock band Kiss got the kiss off from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and they are none too pleased about it.
With their first album released in 1974, the band now easily officially fulfills the requirement for nomination - 25 years since an artists debut - but the rockers are nowhere to be seen on the ballot.
The always outspoken Gene Simmons said, "There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but not Kiss." He added, "I believe we have more gold records in America than any other group, but it's OK."
Kiss lost the ballot to Metallica, rock guitarist Jeff Beck, and soul singer Bobby Womack. The final five - voted on by industry members - will be unveiled in January.
But we don't think their campaign is going to go too well. Simmons signed off on his speech at the Billboard Touring Conference with a nice little jab at the Hall's top officials.
"A lot of those guys on the board can go and get my sandwich when I want, and I mean that in the nicest way."
What a graceful loser!

What a year for the Britster!
And, she's totally ready for the spotlight again, so says her long time manager, Larry Rudolph.
"She's definitely ready," he opines. "She loves to work. She's a very strong person. Everybody goes through setbacks in their lives. [But] every day, I see her getting happier and stronger."
Though her musical comeback is important, Larry says his money-making machine has made it clear that motherhood comes first.
He told a reporter, "Her kids and balancing her life with her kids is an incredible priority – the No. 1 priority in terms of how I operate with her."
We're happy that she's pulling it together!

"I used to live life, like there was no manana
Now I'm treatin every breath, like it was "your honor"
malik b, 1999 "the spark" from things fall apart
well…since we are sitting on the side of the road. what better way to pass the time while the ambulance comes then to….blog.
–actually i spoke too soon….the above was written an hour ago. now im in a roadside motel trying to make sense of this all. the last things i remember are eating 2 pieces of cold pizza and a bowl of rice krispies and watching will ferrel's nuts dance on top of john c. riley's drumset in step brothers. because it was the ghetto bootleg barbershop version i was more or less wondering when the guy in the theater was going to say "watch….this is the good part" to me as the movie went on.
as usual i fell asleep. now normally i woulda been working overtime in preparing my dj set for my paris afterparty on friday but something actually said "meh leave it alone"–
i don't wanna get all deep like it was an omen but those that know me (look at my twit/facebook/myspace/okayplayer/blip history) know that when not onstage i am glued to my computer, doing some sort of activity like converting music or tv shows. but this was a rare occurrence in which i actually went to sleep.
next thing i knew was the most surreal feeling ever….
was i upside down?
why am i covered in cereal?
oh shit….that coffee pot is coming for my face!!!
in reality the crash was all of about 7 seconds….but to do a 360 on the highway and end up ramped up (the van that crashed into ours was UNDER our double decker bus) in the air….is….well…
a frigging miracle.
my first thought was not move a fucking inch. i always had fear that we would fall off a cliff while in high mountain traveling like denver or switzerland. i couldn't tell where gravity began and ended. i felt like i did 3000 crunches so obviously my side of the bus was now on the ground (the only way i can describe the position was imagine yourself on a bus sitting down…..now postion yourself sitting on the left side of the bus….now overturn the bus so that it tips over and falls to the right side. now on top of all that position the front of the bus to stand smack dab in the middle of the air as if a ramp was holding it up 90 degrees.
now add in my drill sgt of a tour manager keith mcphee being keith (which is basically to say no one does intensity or UBER intensity like he does. i ….was……try….ing……to…..rea….ch….my ….ipod so i can channel him out. its like every word he yelled was making this situation much worse than it was….
"……effrom you alive?!?!?!? (yes)………."frank are you alive!?!?!?"…….frank?!!?!?!!?!? FRANK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!…….—"
it was then i realized the severe nature of the accident and i was NOT in the mood to prep myself on whether or not the remaining 12 people upstairs (i know its a dumb reference but look up the Spiceworld movie on youtube and you can see the type of double decker bus that we were traveling on. i hold court downstairs cause noone can stomach the stench of the urine induced potty in the downstairs lounge. —after 15 mins you dont notice it all that much)—so i was holding court downstairs and the 12 of them were asleep in the bunks.
i dont do bunks and this day proves why.
i just wanted someone to calmly tell me the weight of my body was NOT going to push us down a mountainside. then i wanted assurance that the bus was NOT going to explode.
my drum tech d was the first to make sure i was okay and since the Mcpheepanic mode was setting in…the way he was asking me was rather…..panicky (thanks palin) and based on the fact that he was walking on the ceiling indeed let me know that this wasn't no fender bender i was in…..this shit might be the real deal based on how he managed to spiderman walk on the ceiling.
or….am i now on the ceiling?
and why do i have to use every stomach muscle just to sit upright?….wait…..
am i upside down?
damnit…..im upside down……lemme just shift my body to…..oh shit….just…..wait if i can just….lift this….leg to….
damn. i need something to hold on to to hoist myself up in the air. i grabbed on to the table and somehow forgetting that i am NOT smedium (riiiiiiiiiiiip!) the entire table ripped from its foundation and was now on the ceiling….which is now the floor.
this is also when i noticed that i am covered in coffee and tea and bread and about 3 bags of cereal multiple water bottles and dvds and broken glass. and….oh god….did the bathroom fluid overturn too? (yes….and YUCK)
hearing cars outside i now know that i am not going to fall down the mountain side…..were are on the highway. but i can see out the right side of window and i see trees and hills….but i hear car horns and yelling.
and where the hell is the ambulance?!?!?
keith is yelling and im begging him "please don't yell"—but keith dont know calm…..but now he got me thinking something is gonna happen is i DONT get off this bus. problem is the door that i would get out of is now the ground. and i am disillusioned and have no sense of direction. he is telling me i must make my way upstairs and crash my way through the window and escape. im yelling "where is everyone else?!?!" and i am informed that me and the driver are the only two trapped downstairs. now the problem is….im not the smallest person in the world and now i have to use uber arm strength to climb my way out of this bus and figure how to hoist myself without the aid of anything to hold on to.
hard shit indeed.
i made leeway to the stairs when it hit me that all my ID and wallet and lifeline are in my personal bag….allllllllllllllll the way on the other side of the bus. i do the contemplate should i shouldn't i ("i should" won) now it was "how?!"—
the only way i can describe it is that scene in back to the future when doc is in the clock tower and had mere seconds to connect a broken plug that will power marty mcfly's car with 1.8 jiggawatts of lightening power. and winds up using every body part to ensure this goes down the correct way. so my left arm is hoisting my body up and my right arm and left leg are…..trying ……to …..grab……within……inches….my……bag…..(accidents wind up giving you strength you never knew you had….i carried my bag with my legs while i crawled my way upstairs like i was joe the paraplegic on family guy—all the while keith is being keith
ahmir ARE YOU OK!?!?! AHMIR PLEASE SAY SOMETHING!!!!
im like….wait…am i even alive? like what if i "think" im alive when in actually im not like the movies?—-the next 2 minutes proved how alive i was for i managed to crawl through spaces and holes and broken shattered glass like a contortionist blindfolded….
when i got outside…..and looked at what i crawled out of?
man.
i just couldn't believe it.
i mean….how in the hell did we experience this?
how did we manage to….man…..
dog we are soooo alive right now.
and yes we went through all that shit people go through when they go through accidents.
dazed. amazed. grateful. laughing?
of course as i type this its a whole nother story: i think the ambulance workers have caught wind of who we are (ze seed?) and there are about 20 ambulance workers and 10 cops. asking alot of questions in french (we so need tina faris right now)
as i type this we are waiting in line to get examined. (some of us have cuts and neck braces on)—keith is still at the bus trying to salvage what he can (amazingly the uhaul extension is still intact) im a ok. i called my mom and some loved ones. and i managed to twit in the ambulance with artless iphone (wanted to be the first celeb to twit from an ambulance)—i guess im just passing the time and taking advantage of the free "internets" and the worlds best bread (yes….the french bread is all that)
as for the future? if we make it to our slot on the glow in the dark tour in paris that too will be a miracle. til then just wanna let everyone know that we are happy to be alive. and not in that tv cliche way….but man……that was divine intervention. we are so grateful for this outcome.

Poor Celine Dion.
The diva has been forced to postpone several more of her North American show son her Taking Chances World Tour.
Celine is suffering from a respiratory virus.
Just earlier this month, she had to cancel shows in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and Chicago. And in the last week she's had to cancel several more.
But, luckily the concerts have been rescheduled to December, January and February.
That's the way to do it, unlike Janet Jackson's tour with all the canceled shows that never got rescheduled.
As for Celine, her tour promoter, AEG Live, has announced that she is recuperating from a recurrent naso-pharyngeal infection that was further complicated by inflamed vocal cords.
The company added, "Her physician has instructed her to refrain from singing in order to completely recover."
Celine's next show is scheduled for November 25th in San Diego.
Get better soon!

Say what?
We guess that 80's icon Cyndi Lauper just wants to have fun!
She's working on an Xmas song with Swedish garage rock band The Hives.
Their collaboration, A Christmas Duel, will be available as a free download on November 28th.
In a statement, The Hives said, "It may sound weird and come as a surprise to some, but we had to. It came to us. It landed in our lap and was way too good to shake or toss. We knew we had to record it. A sign if you will."
Cyndi commented, "This goes to show even rat sideswipers can have a good Xmas too."
Interesting.
Can't wait to hear this one.

In your mind, does Kanye West = music's Michael Jordan?
Well, to Chicago-bred Kanye, that's how he sees himself!
Here's what Kanye had to say in a new interview :
"I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice. It's me settling into that position of just really accepting that it's one thing to say you want to do it and it's another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan."
Sheesh. Watching all those Chicago Bulls games as a kid got to you, eh, Kanye?
Thoughts?

South African music legend, Miriam Makeba, passed away on Monday.
She was 76 years old.
Ms. Makeba was described as 'a voice who stirred hopes of freedom among millions in her own country, though her music was formally banned by the apartheid authorities she struggled against'.
The songstress died in Italy.
She was singing at a concert in support of Roberto Saviano (an author who has received death threats since writing about Italy's organized crime) and collapsed as she was leaving the stage, the South African authorities said.
Our thoughts go out to her family, friends and the many fans she inspired around the world.

Hint: His brother got a puppy named Elvis for his birthday.
Kevin Jonas reportedly snapped himself up a $225,000 white Lamborghini for his 21st birthday on Wednesday.
We're not a car expert so, we're just assuming that Kevin's $225K new ride looks something like that.
Dayum!
He'll be even more of a girl magnet!

Rock on, AC/DC!
The old Australian rockers' new release, Black Ice sold 271,000 copies during the week ended November 2, which was good enough to put them at the top spot for the second week in a row!
To date, they've sold 1 million copies of Black Ice.
Good job, gandpas!
Pink came in at #2 with 180,000 copies of Funhouse sold.
Zacquisha and crew fell to the #3 spot. The soundtrack to HSM3 sold 162,000 copies.
Wow. In music, guess it pays to be old school!

Live Nation, the big, live music backers of Madonna, Jay-Z and U2 , has donated big bucks to the NO to Proposition 8 campaign.
The company opposes Prop. 8 because the measure takes away individuals' rights.
Senior VP, John Vlautin said, “Live Nation has always offered equal rights and benefits to our employees’ same-sex partners. It is in this spirit that we have made the decision to donate $50,000 to the No on Prop. 8 campaign.”
Music lovers in California, your support is needed.
Go out and vote NO to the hate filled Proposition 8.
Equality for all!

The shitty economy has claimed yet another victim!
Bono and the other U2 guys have been forced to scrap plans to build Ireland's first skyscraper because of the crap state of the global markets.
The U2 Tower was going to be built in the heart of Dublin to house a variety of luxury apartments and the group's recording studio.
The project was projected to cost $256.8 million.
The band is reportedly set on suspending the plans indefinitely.
Bummer!

According to a new report, EMI, the label Katy Perry and Coldplay call home, lost $1.2 billion in the fiscal year ending March 31st of this year.
Ouchy!
Analysts say the loss can be blamed on “poor" operational performance. In particular, 'a high-spending culture (including high executive salaries), overly traditional artist relationships and poor reporting of data related to artist profitability.'
The year before, the company 'only' lost $455 million.
Yikes!
Katy Perry and Coldplay's latest hit the scene post March 31st and have done pretty well.
So, EMI's numbers should look a little better next year, right? …that is if they don't go under!

Ticketmaster is firing "hundreds" of employees.
And, while we think ticketmaster is evil, this still sucks!

We hear Bibles getting whipped out!
In a new interview, country star Reba McEntire reveals that she believes in reincarnation.
What would Jesus think???!!!
Says Reba:
"I believe in reincarnation. I believe I've gone both ways — that I have been here before as a man. I will get flak from Christians who will say I can't be a Christian if I believe this… I'm sorry, but this is how I live my life, this is what I believe. I believe I have spent time with my son, Shelby, before. I believe I have spent time with other people in my life before. Who knows? Maybe I'm part Buddhist."
What kind of a man were you, Reba?
Will a massive Reba boycott be pursued now?

Oops!
Tim McGraw's label, Curb Records, has gone ahead and released yet another McGraw greatest hits album - without the musician's knowledge or permission!
McGraw says he feels most for his fans - "It has to be just as confusing to the fans as it is to me."
That's because this is the second compilation album since 2006, with only one studio album in between.
McGraw says he's been working on a studio album for over a year now, performing new tracks on tour and hoping to release the new album in the fall. But now he'll have to hold off on that.
McGraw tells his fans, "In the spirit of the election year, I would simply say to my fans 'I'm Tim McGraw and I don't approve their message.'" Especially since the album was produced without any communication with him.
Greatest Hits 3 contains all of the singer's hits since 1995, including his current single, Let It Go. There are also two previously unreleased collaborative tracks - Find Out Who Your Friends Are with Tracy Lawrence and Kenny Chesney, and Nine Lives with Def Leppard.
He says he doesn't mean to take away from the people who worked on those songs, but that he is a little embarrassed by the independent label's actions, as fans may feel a little disappointed.
Rightfully so!

AC/DC is not down with iTunes.
Instead of allowing fans the one-click ease of digital music, along with the option to purchase just one track or the entire album, AC/DC devotees will have to schlep to either a Wal-Mart or Sam's Club to pick up their new album, or purchase it off their official website.
Ewww, who wants to go to Wal-Mart????
Black Ice is the band's first album in eight years and even though traditionally the band has managed to perform well despite their anti-digital campaign, a lot has changed since 2000 and Stiff Upper Lip.
Lead singer Brian Johnson thinks that digital outlets such as iTunes are going to kill music, because they are just in it for the money. "It's a…monster, this thing. It just worries me. And I'm sure they're just doing it all in the interest of making as much…cash as possible. Let's put it this way, it's certainly not for the…love, let's get that out of the way, right away."
Oh yeah, like selling through Wal-Mart isn't selling out!
If he knew anything about music, he'd know that the single was actually one of the first and traditional ways to purchase pop music.
You know when you get that one song stuck in your head and you've just got to hear it? You can just go to iTunes or Amazon, and within just a few clicks, it's yours! No trekking to Wal-Mart and battling bored teens.
We'll see how their Luddite approach fares in album sales.
Personally, we love iTunes!

With the presidential election soon approaching, many musicians have taken an active role in participating to promote awareness.
Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Barbra Streisand and many others have helped out.
And, now, Beastie Boys' are hitting the road to perform some shows in the battleground states.
The group has announced the "Get Out & Vote ‘08" tour, which will take them to Virginia on October 28th, Minnesota on November 1st, and end in Milwaukee on November 2nd.
The VA stop will be extra exciting. Joining the boys in Virgina will be Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones and a few others.
Also helping out will be Ben Harper and Tenacious D, who will perform in St. Paul, Minnesota and Milwaukee.
Reps from Rock the Vote will be on hand to distribute information about local polling sites and how to get your early votes counted.
Go Vote!

The rebellious Prince of Motown - Marvin Gaye - is receiving a double film treatment for the near future.
Italian Job director F. Gary Gray is slated to direct - with producers David Foster and Duncan McGillivray attached. Blood Diamond's writer, C. Gaby Mitchell, is signed on to pen the script.
Unlike the film Sexual Healing, which will focus on Gaye's decline post-Motown, Gray's Marvin will cover the entire span of the musician's life, from his rise to Prince of Soul, his defiance of the restrictive hit-making Motown system, his fall and comeback, and finally his tragic 1984 death at the hands of his father.
The production was hung up on acquiring the rights to Gaye's catalog, but with that issue finally cleared up, producers are shopping the film around for some financing.
The actors will lip-sync Marvin's songs, because really now, who could do it better?

The Black Eyed Peas have been hard at work in London on their fifth album, and they are set to complete it soon. Next week actually!
The album is entitled The E.N.D., but, don't you worry, they're not going anywhere. The title is an abbreviation for "the energy never dies."
Get it?
They're SO clever!
It's been three years since their last album, Monkey Business, was released through A&M/Interscope, with whom the band still has a contract for a couple more albums. Tha record sold 4.2 million copies in the United States alone.
They may or may not reconsider their partnership with the label, with will.i.am telling Billboard.com that "It all depends on how they evolve, it's up to them to define what they're going to be in the future."
At this point the label is pressuring them to get the album out soon, but will.i.am hesitates. Instead, he wants to bring a "software guy" onto the band, to help develop a record release that is better suited to today's internet sales, with interactive features and planted content.
He believes that this Christmas is the last year that stores will actually carry physical content. A phenomenon that will.i.am describes as "Fucking scary."
Doubt that will happen - at least not THAT soon!
Will is eager to roll with the times, despite the initial intimidation.
"You should make songs for where songs are actually being listened and played. We have new people — software programmers. They are just as important as me, apl.de.ap, Taboo and Fergie."
Can't wait to see what they come up with! It sounds very futuristic!

Music maestro Ne-Yo revealed some interesting stuff at the LA premiere of the flick The Secret Life of Bees this week.
The singer/songwriter/producer is set to work with rocker Marilyn Manson!
Here's Ne-Yo, in his own words, about the collaboration:
"It's going to be interesting. I have no idea what we're going to do, what it's going to sound like. Just Ne-Yo and Marilyn Manson in the same room—we're going to figure something out."
We can't wait to hear what the guys come up with!
Hopefully Ne-Yo can help resuscitate Manson's near-dead career!

Just kidding!
But, for the one or two Robbie Williams fans still hanging on out there, guess what?
You're in for a treat!
The rocket man is rumored to be hard at work on a new album, scheduled for release next year.
Williams has been hiding out and writing in his Los Angeles home.
The album will be a follow-up to Rudebox, which received a lukewarm response.
Tim Clark - who works with Williams - said, "He's been writing and we heard some wonderful stuff. I was with Robbie last week. He was at home and he was writing songs and he played some of them to us."
We hope that included some "alien anthems!"

Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray is finally coming to an end on Broadway.
The hit show is expected to close in mid-January 2009.
Before its end, though, they'll be welcoming back a familiar face, Harvey Fierstein, who won a 2003 Tony Award as Best Actor in a Musical for playing Edna Turnbald.
Fierstein will be returning to the Neil Simon Theatre between November and mid-January to help end the show with a bang.
Some are guessing (hoping) that Fierstein's return and the announcement of the show closing might gather enough buzz and ticket sales to keep the musical running for a bit longer.
The show got some extra publicity as well when the 2007 release of the movie version came out, featuring hottie Zac Efron.
This August marked Harispray's sixth anniversary on Broadway.
We're kind of sad to hear it's leaving.
What did U think of the musical?

Jonas Brothers fans can except a fun surprise soon.
The Bros are releasing their video for their latest single, LoveBug soon. And, Kevin Jonas says of the clip, "We have a dream of what it can be. It's about capturing that idea. We want to make sure it's always right."
Deep! Ha
As for the song, the guys wrote it while on the road touring with Disney Slut Miley Cyrus.
Nick Jonas says, "We wrote it while on the Christmas break of the 'Hannah Montana' tour. So we were in the hotel room and sat down that night and wrote it in about 15 or 20 minutes."
The inspiration for the song? It actually came from the movie Juno, the Jonai say.
Nick adds, "The vision for the song actually came from some different inspirations. But Juno was one of our favorite movies at the time, and the soundtrack is always kind of odd, so we decided to put those elements in the song, and it came very nicely."
They also get influenced by other great musicians.
"I think there are a lot of things we draw from, but that song in particular is a Beatles influence," says Nick.
And although Joe Jonas didn't want to say the song was about Miley, he did say "It can mean anything. But for us, it's throwing any past inhibitions to the wind."
Nick added, "Really, just falling in love with somebody. And [how] if they break your heart — or however it ends — you think, 'That's it forever,' until the lovebug gets you [again]."
The group hopes to release the Philip Andelman-directed video by October 15.

Is it just us or does it smell like fish around here????
After selling 2.9 million copies of their debut album, PCD, the Pussy Cat Dolls' sophomore release, Doll Domination, has debuted at on the U.S. album charts at a dismal #5 for its first week of sales, moving just 74,000 unites.
New Disney princess Demi Lovato, however, easily outsold the Dolls with 89,000 copies of her first album, Don't Forget, scoring her a #2 place on the charts.
The Kings of Leon also beat the Pussycat Dolls, selling 74,353 records of their new album, Only By The Night.
Doesn't look good for the Dolls.
Their second week sales should be even worse!

The ageless Tina Turner is about to embark on a 7-month world tour.
It's hard to believe that she is 68-years old!
The music legend has hired her trusty friend Bob Mackie (yes, the same guy who designs for Cher) to whip up the stuff that she'll strut in on-stage.
One of the designer's tour costume sketches was revealed on Tuesday (above).
There's no doubt that Tina will look amazing in that short, sexy, short, chocolate creation!
Did we mention SHORT???
Mackie said Tina's “leaning a bit more towards a rock-influenced look.”
So, there's going to be thigh-grazing dresses, beaded tops and shiny stretch pants accented by lacing, fringe, studs and jewels.
Delicious!

You wouldn't think Flea would feel the need to go back to school, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist just enrolled as a freshmen at the University of Southern California.
Why????
He's pursuing a degree…..in music!
When asked why after years of success as a rock musician he felt the need to study Bach's chorales and four-part harmonies, Flea said, "Music is made up out of these building blocks. Studying how these blocks go together and what they consist of and the math of how it works — it's all the same stuff; it's just different aesthetics that we're talking about."
Flea, whose real name is Michael Peter Balzary, knows the value of music in school. He started the Silver Lake Music Conservatory after returning to his public high school and finding the music practice rooms neglected due to lack of funding.
Get ready for the all-night study sessions and hungover 9am classes!

The NFL and NBC have just announced their latest act to headline at the Super Bowl halftime show.
And no, Janet Jackson won't be returning anytime soon.
Set to perform in next year's halftime extravaganza is Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
Nothing will ever top Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's infamous duet and "wardrobe malfunction" from back in 2004, though.
Since them, several "safe" acts have performed, such as Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, and this year it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
The Super Bowl next year will take place on February 1st at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Is this a good idea?
Best Buy will be the exclusive retailer for Guns N' Roses' ages-in-the-making new album, Chinese Democracy, according to new reports.
Details are supposedly still being worked out, including the release date.
Why don't they make it as easy as possible for their fans to pick up the album and get it everywhere?
It sounds like Best Buy is offering lots of money to the band!
Sucks that you fans might have to use that expensive gas and go out of your way to get to a Best Buy!
Is G'N'R still worth it???

Sometimes when you get too big, you forget about the little people.
MySpace has been known to portray themselves as friends to independent music labels. In fact, they often point out that they're responsible for bringing into the mainstream artists like the Arctic Monkeys, who are on an indie label.
However, as of Thursday things have changed.
The site has launched a new music service and several indie record companies have "castigated the social network for offering more favorable terms to major labels with bands like Coldplay than those with acts like XL's Vampire Weekend, which isn't as famous but has a lot of online fans."
So is MySpace $elling out?
Hell yeah!
L-A-M-E.
Charles Caldas, CEO of Merlin, an international licensing group representing over 12,000 indie labels, says that MySpace "just seems to be a massive disconnect within that organization between the reality of what they are building and what they think they have built."
Charles insists that MySpace is treating its clients differently than that of larger record companies.
Here's where it gets interesting.
Reports show that "MySpace Music is a joint venture between the News Corp.-owned social network and the Big Four labels. MySpace has given its partners an equity stake in the new service, but not to Merlin and other independent labels."
So it is all about the money it seems.
Caldas adds, "The disappointing thing was to see that MySpace was going to launch without the labels we represent. We're talking about some of the most significant independent labels and artists in the world." Adding, "It just seems odd. Here's a service that is built on the backs of those kinds of labels and artists. They are the ones its core audience is interested in."
As for MySpace, which is owned by Fortune 500 company News Corp., it says they've done nothing wrong. Adding that, "We have offered a relationship with Merlin that provides equal opportunities to Merlin's Labels and Merlin's artists that we have provided to all labels and artists whether they are indie artists, major artists or unsigned artists."
Even the biggest indie label in the US, Koch Records, is unhappy. CEO of Koch Records, Bob Frank, is said to be "livid" that MySpace would treat his company differently than those of the major label partners.
He says, "Koch Records isn't just going to drop our pants and sign here without being treated like everyone else. How do our four competitors in a practical sense control that service?" asked Caldas. "That is some pretty sticky ground, I would think."
What do U think of MySpace partnering up with the major record companies? Is it unfair to the indies????
Update: Myspace just sent us a statement on this situation.
They say….
"Since the beginning of MySpace, our music platform has been available for all bands at every level. We have been committed to the art of music providing unique opportunities to both indie and major record label artists. This is the first phase of MySpace Music http://www.myspace.com/music. We have struck a deal with The Orchard, a leader in independent digital music, and offered a relationship to Merlin that provides equal opportunities to Merlin’s Labels and Artists, which we have also provided to the entire music industry whether they are Indie Artists, Major Artists or Unsigned acts. We hope that the entire Music Community will take advantage of the unique relationship that MySpace has built over the years between Artists and Fans.

It's back to being single for actress Natalie Portman.
In Touch Weekly is reporting that the aspiring director and her musician boyfriend, Devendra Banhart, have broken up.
A source close to Devendra confirms, "Yes, they have broken up."
That sucks, especially since Portman even appeared in a Bollywood-inspired music video for her now ex-boyfriend's song, Carmensita.
The two apparently fell in love while shooting the video months ago.
Couples shouldn't work together!
The vid will be a constant reminder of what they used to have.
Portman had even moved from NY to Los Angeles just to be closer to Devendra.
The source adds, "Natalie and Devendra will remain friends but need some space and time away."
No worries, we still think she can do better!

As we mentioned earlier this month, Mariah Carey's new flick, Tennessee is set to be released in theaters this December.
We give her credit. After the release of that shiteous Glitter, we can't believe she'd try to do another film!
But, oddly enough, Tennessee has supposedly gotten good reviews at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Really?
Apparently, Director Lee Daniels was so impressed with her "acting" skills, that he's decided to cast Mimoo in a new film, Push, where she'll play "a Harlem social worker ministering to an obese, HIV-positive woman impregnated twice by her father."
Mimi's gunning for an Oscar! Watch.
She's gonna get "ugly" for this role!
And if that weren't enough, Mimi is also working on creating a new movie musical based on her hit Christmas album.
The movie will apparently center around "a town outside a city - perhaps not unlike Mariah's hometown of Huntington, L.I. - where a ruthless developer wants to turn it into one big mall."
Mariah's "producing partner", Benny Medina, says of the film, "Mariah doesn't want to let that happen. Her character uses song and love to keep the Christmas spirit alive."
Gag us with Santa's cock!
The script, which is being worked on by Peter Barsocchini, who also worked on High School Musical, is said to still be in the early stages of development.
Mimi says, "Since I recorded the Christmas album, I've always wanted to make a movie to go with it, something that people could watch and hear and enjoy every year. I'm into it. I'm all about the holiday season."
What do U think of this?

As we reported earlier, Travis Barker and celebrity music spinner, DJ AM were critically injured after their Learjet 60 crashed during takeoff from South Carolina's Columbia Metropolitan Airport, just before midnight on Friday. The plane was headed for Van Nuys, CA.
The former Blink 182 drummer, Baker, and DJ AM are in critical condition and being treated for severe burns at an Augusta, Georgia burn center.
Barker was transported by ground to the burn facility from the site of the crash.
DJ AM was airlifted.
Four people died in the crash.
The deceased have been identified as pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, CA co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, CA, Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, CA, and Charles Still, 25 of Los Angeles, CA.
Chris was Travis's assistant.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.
The plane crash is still under investigation, however, during a press conference late Saturday morning a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the plane overran the airstrip and proceeded to run into a number of the airport's lights and antenna.
Air traffic controllers reportedly "saw sparks coming from the runway" before the crash. Investigators don't know if that was from the aircraft or its engines.
A South Carolina resident named William Owens was driving down a highway next to the airport when he said he saw a fireball go across the road. He told local TV station WIS News 10:
"I didn't know what I had seen — it was maybe 800 feet in front of me, but as I approached it closer though I made out a fire. By then I was able to see the tail of the jet and I recognized it as a jet," Owens said.
Owens then described what he saw as he tried to make it to the wreckage.
"It's in flames and the fuel is running across the road and I had to cross the fuel to get to the two guys that seemed to have been dumped on the highway," Owens said.
Owens said the two men (Travis and DJ AM!) were running around and stripping down to extinguish themselves. He then asked the men if there was anyone else on board the plane and they said four more were with them.
"We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do," Owens said.
Travis and AM were in Columbia, South Carolina Friday night for a T-Mobile sponsored concert at Five Points, a popular shopping district.
Musicians Perry Farrell and Gavin DeGraw were also part of the festivities. Their reps confirmed to us that they WERE NOT on the plane that crashed.
So sad, sad, sad.

The Old New Kids On The Block still got "it"!
No longer kids, the men reunited on stage for their first concert in 14 years at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Thursday night.
Member Danny Wood said it felt "good."
By good he probably meant "awkward." Especially after a screaming fan threw her bra at Joey McIntyre.
He was always our favorite!
Shocked and confused, he threw the bra back.
He probably thought she needed the support!

Country musicians sure know how to take care of each other!
After more than a decade of planning and budgeting, the Nashville music industry is set to build a $95 million senior living community.
The area will be targeted to retirees from the music industry.
As of right now, it's set to open in 2013 in Franklin, Tennessee and will be called The Crescendo At Westhaven.
The complex will feature apartments ranging from $300-$650k and will even include financial assistance for those who are eligible.
Them some damn fancy apartments!
Country singer Martina McBride is supporting the project.
McBride says, "I do think that it's gonna be the first of its kind. It places great importance on keeping people who live here involved with Music Row and feeling like they're still involved in the music industry with things like songwriting workshops to a place to be able to perform if they want to a recording studio where they can still record music."
She adds, "It's just very unique, and I think it really will fit the needs of so many people who have been involved in the music industry in such a special way."
As for the community, it is being modeled after a similar retirement village here in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles, which is overseen bythe Motion Picture Television Fund.
Let's hope these people can even afford those housing prices by the time they retire. The way our shitty economy is going!

Is Tupac really dead? Is Elvis really dead? Yes. And yes.
Duh!
Is Mozart really dead?
Researchers have uncovered a brand new piece of music handwritten by Mozart. It was uncovered in some little dark room where it had been forgotten about in a library in France.
The sheet of music is incomplete, though, as it is only a blueprint for the melody without any instrumentation or harmonies. But "it is absolutely new" said Ulrich Leisinger, head of research at the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria, "We have new music here."
That's one pricey piece of paper! If it were to be sold at auction, experts predict it could easily fetch over $100k!

It can be argued that the Jonas Brothers are Hanson (2.0).
But, instead of harboring any sort of spite for the 'biters', it looks like the Hansons have nothing but love for the new, wholesome, brotherly kings of pop.
The Hansons chatted with Access Hollywood about the Jonas phenoms.
The eldest Hanson, Issac told the entertainment chatter show:
“I wish them all the best in the world. It’s a hard job and they’re definitely packing a lot in."
Taylor Hanson, the hottest one, said the following about the New Jersey trio's music and their future:
“On the musical side, I think there’s very little similarity between us and the Jonas Brothers but I think they seem like really talented guys. They care about each other. [I] just really wish them a lot of luck. I hope they can translate what they’ve done into a career — a long career — in a similar way that we’ve been able to for many years. It’s a great privilege to be able to have this be your career… One clear thing the Jonas Brothers actually have going for them is they have written their own songs. I think what you see a lot of times, unfortunately people like Britney Spears or people that seem to go off the rails when they started out, it wasn’t really their deal. For us, people used to joke like, ‘We couldn’t stop you guys from doing it if we wanted to. When we were young, it was our songs, it was our show, it was our attitude, it was our vision for music videos… For better or worse it was always us. So instead of us waking up in a drunken stupor [years later] and realizing someone stole our money, we started off doing what we wanted and we continued.”
The Hanson' bring up a good point.
For all you aspiring rockers out there, write your own music, y'all.
You'll be in better shape, financially at least, when you're not at the top any more!
But, we wonder what the Hansons really say about the Jonai in private.

90's rockers Alice In Chains are working on a new album.
It's been more than 13 years since they've been in the studio.
The new stuff will feature their new singer, William DuVall.
Their original crooner, Layne Staley, suffered a fatal drug overdose in 2002.
What say you, grunge rockers?
