MGM’s marketing folks are working hard to convince audiences that their Tom Cruise vehicle “Valkyrie” is a thriller and not the bomb “Lions for Lambs” was. But according to MSNBC’s The Scoop, early viewers are saying that Cruise gives the comedic performance of the year, unintentionally. The movie which has been often-delayed is now set to come out the day after Christmas.
A few people who have seen early screenings of the movie told that everyone in the theater uncomfortably laughed at Cruise’s performance. One scene features Tom trying to do the Heil Hitler salute.
“It’s an unsettling scene but you almost start to laugh. His character is resisting it but you never forget it’s Tom Cruise saying ‘Heil Hitler.’ It’s funny and shocking at the same time.”
Another viewer said that Tom only does a German accent at the beginning of the movie,
“The film just isn’t a thriller at all. It’s a bunch of white guys in Nazi uniforms. It’s too bad. And Tom doesn’t speak with a German accent — though they did add a voiceover of him speaking German to the beginning of the film. Still, it’s as if he could say ‘I complete you’ at any time. This is not his Oscar moment.”

Twentieth Century Fox is looking to continue its “X-Men” franchise with a younger set of mutants. The studio has been considering ways to continue its successful series of “X-Men” movies after the third installment, the Brett Ratner-helmed “X-Men: The Last Stand,” collected $459 million in 2006. Fox has been leaning toward using the younger characters introduced in the previous pics in future installments — teenagers with powers taught at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning. Resulting films would likely draw from such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in prior pics. And now Variety is reporting that Fox has chosen “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz to write “X-Men: First Class.”
Schwartz, the creator and exec producer of CW’s “Gossip Girl” hit as well as Fox’s youth-centric “The OC” and NBC’s “Chuck,” is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series, which has earned $1.2 billion worldwide. Writing assignment has also included the possibility of directing the pic, but so far Schwartz has opted not to take the helm.
Although Schwartz has enjoyed smallscreen success, he has yet to crack the world of film with a significant project. He wrote and is attached to direct the coming-of-age comedy “Looking for Alaska” for Paramount. Tackling a new “X-Men” installment will likely give Schwartz instant credibility within the studio world.
Lauren Shuler Donner, who produced all three “X-Men” pics, as well as next summer’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” is producing “First Class” alongside “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” scribe Simon Kinberg. Naturally, “First Class” could also result in its own series of sequels.
While Wolverine is the other “X-Men”-related project already in the works, Fox is actively developing a standalone “Magneto” pic, as well as considering a “Deadpool” spinoff, based on a character played by Ryan Reynolds in “Wolverine.” Shuler Donner is producing “Magneto.”

Marvel Studios’ movie “First Avenger: Captain America,” is moving forward nicely according to Hollywood Reporter. A week after Joe Johnston was announced as director, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in final negotiations to write the script. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing. Markus and McFeely, have a nice resume as a team, including work on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and its sequel, “Prince Caspian.” The duo also wrote HBO’s “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.”
Marvel’s “Captain America” will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set “Avengers.” Captain America, was created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics,is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he becomes a symbol of the war effort, fighting Nazis and villainous scientists like the Red Skull.
In modern times, the character starred in his own long-running comic series and also was a charter member of Marvel’s superteam, the Avengers.
Kicking off with “Iron Man,” Marvel Studios’ slate of movies — including “Thor” and the “Iron Man” sequel — is building toward an “Avengers” movie set for release in 2011, in which the characters from the films team for one big adventure. “Captain America” is scheduled for release May 6, 2011.

The new Star Trek trailer just hit the Internet. The first full length trailer gives a tantalizing look at how director JJ Abrams ( Lost, Fringe ) has revitalized the highly anticipated franchise reboot.
Featuring a storyline that shows Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachery Quinto) from childhood with young James T. Kirk stealing a sports car, yearning to go do something outside of his hometown worthwhile. Incredible space buildings, explosions, bad guys, fights, that cool retro Enterprise warning sound, and Uhura taking off her shirt. It’s all good!
As Eric Bana’s Romulan character Nero says during the new Star Trek trailer: “The Wait is Finally Over.” Well, until the film comes out May 2009 at least.

According to Hollywood Reporter veteran producers Ron Yerxa, Albert Berger and Eric Eisner are teaming up to produce a biopic about Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia. The untitled project will aim to offer a revealing look at the roots of the counterculture icon, focusing primarily on Garcia’s early life in the Bay Area before he joined the band that would become the Grateful Dead.
The Producer trio have acquired rights to Robert Greenfield’s book “Dark Star,” an oral history of Garcia from dozens of people who knew him, including musicians, relatives and artist friends like Ken Kesey. Music rights also are being negotiated, though given that the period in Garcia’s life that’s covered is pre-Dead, producers could avoid some of the trickier negotiations. Topics that may be covered include Jerry’s stint in the military, a life-changing car accident and his first creative encounters with members of the Northern California music scene including future Dead bassist Phil Lesh.
The Dead has been the subject of number of documentaries — including 1977’s “The Grateful Dead Movie,” a concert film Garcia directed — but the story of Garcia’s life has never been told on the big screen. Topper Lilien, who penned Universal’s Paul Newman-starring drama “Where the Money Is,” has been attached to write the screenplay.
Producers Berger and Yerxa have collaborated on some of the biggest indie hits of the past decade, including “Election” and “Little Miss Sunshine,” while Eisner produced the Sundance hit “Hamlet 2″ with Berger and Yerxa and is attached to produce “Bait,” a remake of Betrand Tavenier’s mid-’90s French thriller.

Bits and pieces of perhaps the real story of why Terrence Howard is not part of Iron Man 2 are starting to emerge. With the blockbuster Marvel film grossing more than $300 million, and Terrence Howard’s supporting character Col. Jim Rhodes looking poised for a big role as War Machine in the follow-up after he muttered ”Next time, baby” to Iron Man’s steel suit, it was a shocker to see him suddenly dropped from the sequel.
Then reports emerged that Don Cheadle will replace Howard because of his alleged difficult behavior on the set of Iron Man. But those with intimate knowledge of the situation suggest a far more complicated situation. Howard was the first actor signed to the film and, on top of that, was the highest-paid, more than Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Robert Downey Jr. And once the project fully came together, it was too late to renegotiate his deal. It didn’t help that, according to one source, Favreau and his producers were ultimately unhappy with Howard’s performance, and spent a lot of time cutting and reshooting his scenes.
Supposedly because of those difficulties Favreau and screenwriter Justin Theroux went to map out the sequel they found themselves minimizing Howard’s story line. Once Marvel learned that Favreau was thinking of deemphasizing the role, the studio went to the actor’s agents with a new and drastically reduced offer, estimated at somewhere between a 50 and 80 percent pay cut a number that’s similar to what supporting cast members were paid for the first movie. Howard’s agent, according to sources, was quite taken back by this new figure. Multiple EW sources say that Marvel execs never told Howard’s reps that they had issues with the star’s on-set conduct. (Marvel would not comment for this story.)
It’s unclear whether Howard’s team walked away first, or if Marvel ended the discussion at that point. Either way, the studio moved quickly to secure Cheadle (who probably is now wondering how he got in the middle of all this) and the story leaked out the next morning, Oct. 14. And alas for Howard, there will be no next time.

While Iron Man 2 has been in headlines, with the most recent announcement being that Don Cheadle will be playing Col. James Rhodes instead of Terrence Howard, Marvel had not confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. and director Jon Favreau would be back. With mainly positive reviews, Iron Man grossed nearly $580 million worldwide and sequel talk began before the movie had earned even half as much.
Now Variety reports, Robert Downey Jr. has signed an extensive deal with Marvel Studios that will have him reprising the role of Tony Stark and his heavy-metal alter ego for two more Iron Man films, and also for the upcoming superhero team film The Avengers (more on that below). Downey, is currently in London shooting his role as the super sleuth in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, costarring Jude Law and Rachel McAdams.
Similarly Favreau will be behind the camera again for Iron Man, but he will also serve as a producer on The Avengers. The Avengers were also a popular Marvel Comic originally featuring an all-star line-up Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Thor. Solo Thor and Captain America feature films are also underway.
Iron Man 2 is currently slated for a May 7, 2010, release, while The Avengers is tentatively set to hit the big screen July 15, 2011.

Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise make their highly anticipated return to the big screen next year in J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek.” And Entertainment Weekly’s Star Trek cover story is now online. In the story Abrams says, “We weren’t making a movie for fans of Star Trek. We were making a movie for fans of movies.” There is a lot of new information in the story, the centerpiece of which is the explaination of the plot:
Star Trek’s time-travel plot is set in motion when a Federation starship, the USS Kelvin, is attacked by a vicious Romulan (Eric Bana) desperately seeking one of the film’s heroes. From there, the film then brings Kirk and Spock center stage and tracks the origins of their friendship and how they became officers aboard the Enterprise. In fact, the movie shows how the whole original series crew came together: McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoë Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekov (Anton Yelchin). The adventure stretches from Earth to Vulcan, and yes, it does find a way to have Nimoy appearing in scenes with at least one of the actors on our cover — and maybe both. The storytelling is newbie-friendly, but it slyly assimilates a wide range of Trek arcana, from doomed Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) to Sulu’s swordsmanship to classic lines like, ”I have been, and always shall be, your friend.” More ambitiously, the movie subversively plays with Trek lore — and those who know it. The opening sequence, for example, is an emotionally wrenching passage that culminates with a mythic climax sure to leave zealots howling ”Heresy!” But revisionism anxiety is the point. ”The movie,” Lindelof says, ”is about the act of changing what you know.”

Don Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2
Terrence Howard will not be returning for Iron Man 2, and will be replaced by Don Cheadle. Howard played James Rhodes, best friend of Tony Stark and the future armor-clad hero War Machine in this year’s blockbuster hit. One scene teased the appearance of War Machine in the next installment, a possibility confirmed last month by director Jon Favreau.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, negotiations between Marvel Studios and Howard fell through over financial differences, “among other reasons.” So, Marvel turned to Oscar-nominated Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda, Ocean’s Thirteen) not a bad second choice but Terrance would have made a great War Machine. Jon Favreau is returning as director, and Robert Downey Jr. is expected back as billionaire industrialist Stark/Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to be back as Stark’s assistant, Pepper Potts. Iron Man 2 is scheduled for release April 30, 2010.

Steve Martin will join Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin in the untitled romantic comedy that Nancy Meyers wrote and will direct in February.
Martin and Baldwin will play rivals for the affection of Streep’s character according to Variety. Meyers will make this film for Universal. Her previous two films were at Columbia in “Something’s Gotta Give” and “The Holiday.” Universal acquired foreign on the latter, and the film performed more strongly overseas than it did domestically.
Martin is reteaming with Meyers, who co-wrote and produced both of the “Father of the Bride” films in which Martin starred for Disney. Martin next reprises his role as Inspector Clouseau in “Pink Panther 2″ (groan!), which Sony releases on Feb. 6.

Despite having some anxiety about making the transition from teen actor to Hollywood star Zac Efron seems to be a hot commodity right now.
“Senior Year” director Kenny Ortega wants the 20-year-old to take the lead role of the modern version of “Footloose”, insisting that Efron would be “perfect” for the role. Ortega told BBC, “I think he’d be the perfect, perfect, perfect candidate to step in. I mean he’s got this global excitement, this wonderful know-how.” Further hinting that Efron may take the role once belonging to Kevin Bacon, the filmmaker then added, “He’s the perfect age, so versatile, and talented and dynamic. You know it’s hard for me to even imagine anybody that I think would be more perfectly suited.”
Zac who is now a young veteran in musicals including High School Musical and Nikki Blonsky’s co-star in “Hairspray” commented: “I’ll always be open to more musicals. I think they’re fun and I think it’s our responsibility as performers to try and keep them alive. I love Footloose - it’s a great movie.”
On the remake project of the 1984 flick itself, it is expected to begin sometime in 2009, according to Ortega.
Zac recently revealed he could still “mess up” and is looking to get advice on how to steer his acting career:
“I would love to just sit down and talk with Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp and pick their brains about their early careers. They do it because they love it, not because they enjoy being famous. You have to have good foresight and be really careful. If you don’t adapt and learn at a very young age, you can really mess up.”
Zac is clearly hoping to shed his wholesome image, having just finished shooting period drama Me and Orson Welles alongside Claire Danes.
It’s also been revealed the Disney heartthrob has been approached to take over from Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe in controversial Broadway play Equus. Zac let slip at the London premiere of High School Musical 3, saying: “You know that Daniel Radcliffe role on Broadway, well it’s been mentioned.”

Forest Whitaker will star and direct a Louis Armstrong biopic, the first bigscreen project to be authorized by the legendary musicians estate.
The film is titled after Armstrong’s well known song “What a Wonderful World,” and Ron Bass, is slated to write the original script. Oscar Cohen, executive of the Armstrong estate and the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation will co-exec produce with Bass. Cohen, who began working for the musician in the late ’40s as his road manager, is granting the filmmakers exclusive access to his personal accounts as well as to letters and other material in the Armstrong archives.
The film, will kick off during the musician’s impoverished early years in New Orleans and primarily chronicle his career as a trumpet virtuoso and improvisational singer. Forest Whitaker who portrayed jazz great Charlie Parker in “Bird,” sums up Armstrongs career with:
“Armstrong left a monumental mark on our lives and our culture. He lived an amazing life and, through his art, shifted the way music was played and would be heard after him, not just here in the U.S. but all over the world.”
“What a Wonderful World” will begin shooting in the summer in Louisiana.

Director Steven Spielberg has formally quit Paramount Pictures to launch a brand new film venture.
Spielberg, director of such legendary works as Jaws, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, ET: The Extraterrestrial and the Indiana Jones franchise, will hold a CEO position in the new venture alongside current Dreamworks CEO and co-chairman Stacey Snider.
The deal was finalised by David Geffen, co-founder with Spielberg of the Dreamworks film studio, and Reliance CEO Anil Ambani, ranked the world’s sixth richest man in 2008 by Forbes magazine.
Geffen will not be joining the new company, but the majority of existing Dreamworks staff are expected to be offered positions at the new company.
The legendary moviemaker will reportedly produce 35 movies in the next five years as part of the forthcoming multi-billion deal with India’s Reliance ADA Group.
Paramount will have the option to co-finance and co-distribute feature films made by the new venture.
Spielberg will also stay at the helm of the Transformers franchise for Paramount, and will collaborate on three other movies for the Hollywood giant, including the science-fiction remake of When Worlds Collide - slated for a 2010 release.
Both parties say the split is amicable. Paramount Pictures CEO Brad Grey says, “We have had a great run with the DreamWorks team both creatively and financially.
“In particular, it has been a true honor working closely with a storyteller of Steven’s talent and stature.” Spielberg says he had “enjoyed a productive creative and business collaboration” with Paramount and spoke of “extending the relationship for many years to come.”
Despite all the amiable words, the motivation for this move was that Speilberg wanted the studio he helped build, Dreamworks, to once again be fully independent and own the films it puts out. However he needed $1 billion in third-party financing to make that dream a reality hence this new marriage. At Paramount, Spielberg essentially was a producer and director of films owned by others so leaving the studio was the only way to allow the uber-director to stake actual ownership claim to his future films.

Departing CSI: Crime Scene Investigation star and co-producer William Petersen has hinted he’ll return for a big screen version of the hit TV drama. The actor, who will give up his role as forensics expert Gil Grissom on the show during the forthcoming season, admits there have been talks about turning the series into a blockbuster movie for years - and it still might come off.
Petersen, who will stay on as a producer of the show after his departure this autumn (08), says, “I’d love to see us make a CSI film… That’s the reason Grissom isn’t going to die of a brain tumor. It would be good if we did it (film) right. The whole world is interested in the show… (but) you have to make sure it’s not just an extended episode.”

Warner Bros. is taking us back to Jellystone Park, as it develops a new feature version of “Yogi Bear,” the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
The project, culled from Warners’ vast library, is planned as a live-action/animated hybrid along the lines of Fox’s 2007 hit “Alvin & the Chipmunks.” Much of the movie will be live-action, but Yogi Bear and sidekick Boo Boo will be done in CG.
Yogi Bear first appeared as a supporting character in 1958 in another classic cartoon, “The Huckleberry Hound Show.” In 1961, he got his own show, which has aired in reruns frequently during the past half-century.
Yogi’s exploits take place in Jellystone Park, where he and Boo Boo get into good-natured mischief and must elude their nemesis, Ranger Smith.
“Surf’s Up” co-helmer/co-writer Ash Brannon will direct and Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, who exec produced “That ’70s Show” and are writing the feature “Tooth Fairy” for Fox, are penning the screenplay.

Branagh in talks to direct ‘Thor’
Kenneth Branagh is reportedly in serious negotiations to direct Marvel Comics “Thor,” the next superhero property that will be turned into a live-action film by Marvel Studios. The “Thor” negotiations come during a resurgence for Branagh. He’s currently drawing raves on the London stage in the title role of “Ivanov,” and he’ll next be seen acting in the Richard Curtis-directed “The Boat That Rocked” and the Bryan Singer-helmed “Valkyrie.”
“Thor” follows disabled medical student Donald Blake, who has an alter ego as the hammer-wielding Norse god Thor.
Branagh is the latest in a string of directors — such as Jon Favreau (”Iron Man”), Christopher Nolan (the Batman franchise) and Gavin Hood (”X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) — with arthouse roots taking on big-budget comicbook fare.
Marvel will set a distributor for “Thor” shortly as the film is set for a 2010 release.

Green Lantern Movie Starts Shooting Next Spring
Producer Donald De Line, who is developing the Green Lantern film, says that “a new draft of the script came in” and they’re “gearing up to start shooting early spring.” While it’s not confirmed, he added that “it’s coming together and I’m excited about it. “ The structure adheres closely to the ’superhero origin movie paradigm.’ In Green Lantern’s case, Hal Jordan has to overcome his selfishness and self pity over the death of his father Martin Jordan. De Line confirmed again that Greg Berlanti, of “Everwood” and The Broken Hearts Club, will be directing.

Ghostbusters 3 moving from dream to definite possibility
Bill Murray broke his silence on the long-rumored third installment at last night’s Fantastic Fest, and you can watch what he had to say above (the good part starts 5 minutes in).
Among other things, Bill tells the Austin crowd how much fun he had making the first Ghostbusters, and how the first 40-45 minutes of the film are “about as fun as movies get” (I’d tend to agree). That said, the second movie lost him when it started becoming more about the special effects than the characters, and Murray hopes the new writers (Office scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg) can bring the story back to its character-driven roots. We hope!

Perhaps this will end the streak of Japanese-inspired American horror films that don’t translate well? A very promising one is on its way next month, starring Famke Janssen, in the ghost film, 100 Feet, which makes its U.S. debut at the Austin Film Festival next month. The reason many Japanese-horror remakes don’t work according to 100 Feet director Eric Red, is because they replace creepy, homemade visual and sound effects with CG. (That’s what happened in the U.S. remake of The Ring.) But in 100 Feet, which is inspired by Japanese horror, the main monster is played by a real actor, and the effects are done with minimal computer interference, making for a very believable—and much more Japanese-y— experience.
Makes sense and having Famke Janssen in the lead role should make for good watching too.

Continuing the Hollywood trend of remaking bad movies, a ‘Beverly Hills Ninja’ sequel is on it’s way. Beverly Hills Ninja is said to be less of a sequel than some sort of bizarre reboot. This new spin tells the the tale about a white kid who grows up with an Asian family, and convinces himself he’s the legendary dancing ninja… whatever the heck that is. When his Sensei is murdered, he follows in Chris Farley’s large footsteps and heads to Hollywood to track down the killer. David Hasselhoff and High School Musical co-star Lucas Grabeel are set to star. We’re guessing Lucas will be the dancing ninja, and perhaps the Hoff, will be the Sensei or play the heavy. The movie will start shooting in South Korea as soon as next month. It’s a big deal, because it’s the first mainstream movie to shoot there, and because it stars David Hasselhoff.

Director Steven Soderbergh is working on a biopic of the one and only Liberace! Variety reports that Soderbergh has picked Michael Douglas, who he worked with in ‘Traffic’, to play Liberace.
Matt Damon is also in talks to play Scott Thorson, Liberace’s alleged companion of five years. Scott sued Liberace in 1982 for $113 in palimony. Even though Liberace denied he was gay, he still settled with Scott for $95,000 in 1986. In 1987, Liberace passed away of complications from AIDS at the age of 67.

Warner Bros. plans to rerelease “The Dark Knight” in January, just in time for the height of Academy Awards voting season. The film’s huge commercial and critical success has spurred talk of possible Oscar nominations for its director Christopher Nolan, producers and cast — most specifically Bale’s co-star, Health Ledger, for the late actor’s edgy performance as the Joker.
To date, “Dark Knight” has taken in about $512 million domestically and $440 million internationally, including more than $55 million in Imax grosses. A pre-Oscars re-release would help assure its topping $1 billion worldwide, and any traction with nominations or wins would likely mean even greater box office.
For me it just doesn’t sit well to try to influence Oscar selections by doing a rerelease but perhaps that’s just me.

Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures Corp. are bing sued for allegedly ‘borrowing to much’ from “Rear Window” when they made the movie “Disturbia.”
“Disturbia,” a 2007 thriller, which starred Shia LaBeouf as a kid on house arrest that spies on a neighbor, who he suspects is a serial killer.
The copyright infringement lawsuit, filed Monday in Manhattan, says “Disturbia” copied a short story Cornell Woolrich wrote in 1942 and the 1954 Alfred Hitchcock movie that starred James Stewart and Grace Kelly and was based on the story.
Woolrich died in 1968. The rights to “Rear Window” were sold to Sheldon Abend, who died in 2003. His estate brought the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages.
I saw both movies and it seems like now-a-days there are so many films with similar ideas that copyright infringement laws held to this standard would preclude many new movies from being made today.

In an interview with MTV News conducted at the Toronto Film Festival, Michael Caine who is there to promote “Is There Anybody There?” — seemed to confirm rumors that the next installment of the “Batman” film franchise will feature The Riddler and The Penguin. “They’ve already got them in mind,” said Caine who stars in The Dark Night as loyal butler Alfred, when asked who he’d like to see take up arms against the Caped Crusader. “It’s Johnny Depp as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I read it in the paper.” But according to the veteren actor, he confirmed the news through the studio itself:
“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]
So if true would you be excited to see Depp take his shot at playing the Riddler? And what criminal do you really want to see next? Is it time to stop the rehashing of old enemies like Catwoman, Riddler and Penguin and bring in a fresh evil face?

The Venice Film festival, which unofficially kick-starts the awards season leading to the Oscars, will be remembered chiefly for comeback king Mickey Rourke. Director Darren Aronofsky and actor Mickey Rourke
received a standing ovation from reporters during the film’s press conference, as parallels were drawn with Rourke’s own troubled past. In The Wrestler, Rourke plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, who has a blossoming romance with an ageing stripper, played by Marisa Tomei. His performance as the title character, the wrestler, an aging professional boxer who cannot come to terms with the fact that time has taken its toll on him, has garnered rave reviews. Even so Rourke lost out in the best actor award to Italy’s Silvio Orlando, who picked up the Coppa Volpi for his role in Il Papa di Giovanna. Even so, Rourke who was a box office draw in the 1980s,
has made a remarkable comeback. The jury of the world’s oldest film festival, praised Rourke’s work as “a truly heartbreaking performance, in the very sense of the word,” and bestowed the actor with the coveted Golden Lion awards.

Tommy Lee Jones is suing Paramount Pictures, the makers of “No Country for Old Men” for more than $10 million dollars. The Oscar-winning actor claims he is owed for starring in the 2007 hit crime thriller. Jones, who played Sheriff Ed Tom Bell in the film, claims he was not paid promised bonuses and had expenses wrongly deducted. The suit says Jones was paid a reduced upfront fee in joining the film, and that his contract had known errors not corrected before the movie was made.
Jones, is asking that an auditor be named to review financial records to determine how much he should be paid. Jones allegedly was promised “significant box-office bonuses” and other compensation depending on the success of the film, which went on to make more than $160 million.

Ace reporter Nikki Finke says that both star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will be returning to make Spider-Man 4. Sony actually had a difficult time locking in both veterans of Spider-Man 1 through 3. Apparently just a few weeks ago sources told Nikki that Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal was openly discussing Tobey’s potential replacements with various Hollywood agents because Tobey was hanging tough about a deal. Too bad I say because I think they made a mediocre choice in casting Maguire as Spiderman. There’s no deal yet for Kirsten Dunst but Mary Jane Watson will be in the movie again.
Even though Spiderman wore the black costume in Spiderman 3, and “dark” is all the rage in superhero movies right now given the enormous success of The Dark Knight, that’s not the direction the series is heading. Zodiac screenwriter Jamie Vanderbilt’s script and Sam Raimi’s direction will stay true to Peter Parker who has no dark side himself. Peter Parker’s struggle is about sacrifice.”
Sony is taking its time officially hiring the movie’s villain since principal photography doesn’t start on Spider-Man 4 until next fall because of the recently postponed May 2011 release. However rumor is, that “once you find out who the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it.” Does that mean Dylan Baker’s character of Dr. Curt Connors will ultimately turn into ‘The Lizard’ as he did in the comic books? Or will Daniel Gillies, who plays John Jameson, the astronaut fiance of Mary Jane in Spider-Man 2, become the villain Man-Wolf? Could James Franco take over as the Green Goblin? Peter Parker needs to find a new circle of friends!
Nikki also reports the studio is considering the feasibility of shooting Spider-Man 4 and 5 at the same time because doing that is so cost effective and “it wasn’t so easy to get everybody back together”.
In other spidey related news, Sony is moving forward on its Spider-Man Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge of U2 to be directed by Julie Taymor, the Tony Award-winning director of The Lion King.
Also Sony has hired a pair of screenwriters to work on a Spider-Man 3 spinoff movie Venom.

This was bound to happen given that new ideas are so few and far between in Hollywood, so studios are looking to remake every movie that’s ever been successful. Sony studio has recruited “The Office” writer-producers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg to work on a new installment of the 1980s franchise Ghostbusters, that starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis as bumbling ghost-hunting scientists. Given the time that’s passed (debuted in 1984) the stars have gotten a little long in the tooth for a sequel. But some original cast members including director Ivan Reitman, might be involved, but not in central roles in the sequel.
Stupnitsky and Eisenberg, have worked with Ramis before. The duo penned with Ramis the biblical comedy “Year One,” which is produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Ramis, and scheduled for release in 2009 by Sony.
“Ghostbusters” was Sony’s top-grossing film ever until it was surpassed by “Men in Black,” with the 1984 film grossing $292 million worldwide, and its 1989 sequel brought in another $215 million globally.

Michael Moore will release his new film “Slacker Uprising,” online and for free. The movie, follows Moore’s 62-city tour during the 2004 election to rally young voters. It will be available for three weeks as a free download to North American residents, beginning Sept. 23. The 97-minute long “Slacker Uprising” will be the first major film to be released in such a way. Last December, “Jackass 2.5″ was streamed online and for free, but that was only a collection of left over material from “Jackass 2.”
Moore said he considered releasing “Slacker Uprising” theatrically as “Michael Moore’s big election year movie” as he did with 2004’s “Fahrenheit 9/11,” which was highly critical of President Bush. Instead, Moore opted for a symbol of gratitude to his fans as he approaches the 20th anniversary of his first film, 1989’s “Roger & Me.”
“I thought it’d be a nice way to celebrate my 20th year of doing this,” Moore said. “And also help get out the vote for November. I’ve been thinking about what I want to do to help with the election this year.”

I know this isn’t our usual fare, but given the popularity of the recent movie on this unsolved case thought some of you might be interested. The FBI has confirmed to Sacramento TV station CBS13, that they are now running laboratory tests on some items that may link a suspect to the killer. The evidence was given to the FBI by a Pollock Pines man who also claims he recently found the disguise worn by the Zodiac Killer during one of his attacks.
Photo of Jack Tarrance (left) and a composite of the Zodiac Killer
Dennis Kaufman is convinced his now deceased stepfather is the Zodiac Killer, and wants retribution because he thinks the man also killed his mother and many others. He himself turned forensic evidence including a blood stained knife, gruesome and undeveloped photos, handwriting samples, and a black hood with the zodiac sign on it. It’s similar to the hood worn during the vicious 1968 Lake Berryessa attack, which is the possible key evidence connecting his stepfather to the killings. Better then go into more details here is a link to a video CBS13 did, where they interview the stepson here.

Despite rumors to the contrary Steven Spielberg, will direct the first installment of the eagerly awaited Tintin franchise.
The Adventures of Tintin is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi (1907–1983). The movie, which focuses on mystery-solving teen reporter Tintin and his dog Snowy, stars Thomas Sangster as the enigma-busting sleuth, alongside King Kong star Andy Serkis, who will play Tintin’s trusty sidekick Captain Haddock. Eric Stoltz is rumored to play Dr. Krospell. The series set in a painstakingly researched world closely mirroring our own, has continued as a favorite of readers and critics alike for over 70 years, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
It has always been the plan for Spielberg to take on the direction of the franchise’s first film, with Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson taking over from the Jaws legend for the subsequent sequels (a trilogy is planned). On Tuesday, a representative for Herge Studios, the Belgium based production company who hold the rights to the beloved character, said Jackson would be leading the first film, with Spielberg acting as an indirect contributor.
However, spokespeople for both filmmakers insist it is Spielberg who is in charge of the first film, due to start shooting in the fall of this year, as originally planned.

Let me say I was a Black Sabbath fan back in the day. And I saw this story today and it kind of made me chuckle. Apparently Ozzy Osborne’s son Jack is trying to repair the perceived damage he thinks the reality TV show The Osbournes, did to his father’s reputation by gathering some friends and executive producing his own Ozzy documentary. And that also means taking a swipe at the MTV reality show that put his family back on the map. Jack tells Rolling Stone magazine:
“I think The Osbournes, to a degree, tarnished the public’s perception of my dad as a bit of a senile, funny, bumbling guy. Yeah, my dad can be that guy, but it’s not [all of] him. ”
No doubt Ozzy was and is a talented man. He came from humble surroundings in Birmingham,England and left school at 15. The “Godfather of Heavy Metal,” is a rock musical legend, but I think Ozzy would tell you himself he is no rocket scientist. And years of drug and alcohol abuse have taken their toll.
Now Jack is supposedly trying to rejuvenate his dad’s rocker legacy with a film memoir. He has recruited his own friends and his dad’s former bandmates to contribute to a documentary he began shooting in January.
Ozzy is dyslexic (that’s why he left school early) and “refused to do a book,” Jack adds. “So this is more like a talking book, a really thorough autobiography.”
Jack insists though this will be an honest look at Ozzy’s life.
“My dad’s not an idiot – he’s nothing short of a genius, in my opinion,” he explains. “He does have huge flaws, and we’re trying to really paint an honest picture of that.”
I can kind of see where Jack is coming from with all this. Perhaps over the 4 seasons of seeing the family shenanigans of the Osborne family, audiences perceive Ozzy as a bumbling character. But to me the show humanized Ozzy, and showed a softer eccentric side of a character often portrayed as a ‘biting the heads off bats drug crazed maniac’. So good for Jack for wanting to show the bright side of Ozzy. Somewhere between all of the caricatures of Ozzy, there is a man that broke new ground in music and had a very long successful career.

Four years after his character Richard B. Riddick last graced the silver screen, Vin Diesel tells MTV News, that two Riddick sequels are being written as we speak.
“David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind,” he said of Riddick, the Furyan warrior first introduced in the 2000 film “Pitch Black.” “‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ was presented as a three part trilogy that would answer ‘Pitch Black’ in the same way that ‘Lord of the Rings’ answered ‘The Hobbit.’”
Pretty ambitious talk for a movie that was rather poorly received when it opened domestically in 2004. The movie did have legs in the long hail and performed well overseas, and also spawned a best-selling video game, so maybe it broke even financially? Diesel, insists though that the long time between sequels is not because the project had lost momentum, but a quest to getting everything right. Diesel asserted:
“Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I’m always working on it. It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it.”
I still wonder though if Diesel is deluding himself here. I am a sci-fi fan but I couldn’t say I really liked the story that much. Did anyone out there, who watched The Chronicles of Riddick actually really like it enough to want to see a sequel?

More Marvel action for comic book affectionado Nicolas Cage. He joins British actor Aaron Johnson and Lyndsy Fonseca (”How I Met Your Mother”) to star in “Kick-Ass,” Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the violent Mark Millar Marvel comic-book series.
‘Kick-Ass’ centers on a high school dweeb named Dave Lizewski who decides to become a superhero even though he has no athletic ability or coordination. Things change though when he runs into real bad guys with real weapons.
Johnson plays the dweeb - title character, and Fonseca plays the object of the teen’s infatuation, who believes that Dave is gay. In this age of remaking every movie that was remotely successful in the past, it comes as no surprise, (but with disappointment) that the cult musical “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” is set to be redone. MTV studio bosses were eager to replicate the success of the 1975 movie, which starred Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Meat Loaf. Will give MTV some credit for working on something that actually involves playing music for once.
Casting hasn’t been announced yet, but sources claim Russell Brand has been asked to fill Tim Curry’s garter belt as transvestite scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter. I think it
