Sarah Palin burst on to the national scene with that lovely speech about how Barack Obama wasted his time helping "communities" while she personally destroyed the Bridge Over the River Nowhere. Everyone loved it, and the nation fell in love with the cheerfully bitchy makeup-plastered trollop. Ever since that day, every time we see Sarah Palin she is delivering the exact same speech, in the exact same cadence. It was so good she never bothered to find a second thing to read into microphones! But there are some oddities with the remarks that made her famous. Like, who wrote it? Bush speechwriter Matt Scully is credited with it, but some of it seems a bit at odds with his typical work. Like the person delivering it, and the bit with the reactionary old anti-Semite that was thrown in there.
Who's Matt Scully? Time explains:
A veteran of the early Bush White House, his specialty was crafting Bush's pro-life message in a way that would not offend soccer moms or mainstream Catholics who get nervous around some of the more extreme Evangelical rhetoric. A former protégé of the late pro-life Democratic governor of Pennsylvania, Bob Casey, Scully has a history of finding rhetorical unity for voters on the right and in the center.
They also say Scully wrote the speech largely before Palin was selected. Which makes sense. But the parts that seemed tailored specifically to her? Who wrote those? Specifically, the line about small towns, and how they grow great people? That line, as was revealed this week, was written by a very bigoted columnist named Westbrook Pegler. That line seems like a landmine of unintentional readings: it was written by a racist, about a man who became president when the old man before him died. Not really a single good interpretation there, right?
Well either someone more wacky and right-wing than Scully got a hold of the speech before it was delivered (possible!), or Scully sabotaged her. Hear us out!
Scully left the Bush administration pissed off at his fellow speechwriter Mike Gerson and willing to settle scores in the pages of the liberal Atlantic. He wrote a book about animal rights and how he came to be a fairly militant vegetarian. The book is about how we humans have abused our God-granted "dominion" over the animals. He even opposes many hunting practices! Including, say, hunting wolves from fucking airplanes.
So. Michael Scully either put his party before his sense of morality and wrote a "red meat" speech for a wolf huntress, or someone else got in there and fixed it before Palin delivered it, or Scully bit his tongue and inserted a line by a long-dead far-right extremist that he found in an ancient Pat Buchanan book. Which, from the guy who crafted the "compassionate conservative" "different kind of Republican" message of Bush's 2000 campaign, seems an odd source to borrow from.
Also, when will anyone besides bloggers and Thomas Frank mention the Pegler quote or track down Scully for an interview?
The owner of a website opposing the Kremlin-backed leadership of Russia's troubled Ingushetia region—scene of a recently failed separatist uprising—was shot and killed by law enforcement officials there today. Magomed Yevloyev, who ran the site www.Ingushetiya.ru, had just touched down at the airport after a trip to Moscow when police took him into custody and drove away with him in a Volga. Inside the car, Yevloyev was shot in the temple. The authorities don't even deny it, coming up with an excuse that will be quite familiar to film fans.
Using the "Vincent Vega Defense" the Prosecutor General's Office in Moscow claims that the gun accidentally went off inside the car, and just happened to hit Yevloyev directly in his brain. Though that doesn't explain why, as his friend contends, the police tossed his body into the street near a local hospital and sped off. "It was in no way a mistake," says the friend.
The article notes that, "Magomed Yevloyev is one of the most high-profile journalists to be killed in Russia since investigative reporter Anna Politkovskaya was shot dead near her Moscow apartment in 2006, provoking condemnation of Russia's record on media freedom." [Reuters]
Hackers brought down the website for Russia's state-sponsored news agency, RIA Novosti, for several hours today with a series of cyber attacks. This in the wake of three days of fighting between Russia and Georgia. "'The DNS-servers and the site itself have been coming under severe attack,' said Maxim Kuznetsov, head of the RIA Novosti IT department." It's hard to imagine why in the world anyone would want to cripple good ol' RIA Novosti's news-spreading capabilities. Oh, in unrelated news, here is the rest of the Kremlin-backed article.

Below them are the Olly Girls (a.k.a. Molly Shea and Holly Huddleston), who aren't exactly examples of classy, sophisticated young women, but hey, they tried. I want to smack myself for saying this, but Molly and Holly are regulation hotties, and I can see why they're so popular on the show - guys love them and girls love to hate them. However, that does not save them from my fashion disaster list.
Molly's polo shirt dress would have looked cute with a pair of flats during the day, but NOT on the red carpet! And don't even get me started on her shoes - it looks like someone took a perfectly nice pair of wedges and let their toddler bedazzle and finger paint all over them.
Holly's tatas are out of control and her top looks like something from the Wet Seal clearance bin. Don't start sending me hate mail - there is nothing wrong with Wet Seal, but this busty blonde should know better than to wear a $9.99-looking shirt to a "red carpet event."
Thought I was done bitching about these girls? Think again! I could write a short story about the fashion catastrophe that is Jenae Alt, but I will try to keep it to one paragraph. First of all, she's wearing white shoes with a black dress. Second, her dress has a studded leather collar. I could just keep on listing things, but I'd lose track of the numbers. Her hair and makeup are excessive, and her blue steel face is burning a hole right through my computer screen. Her pose proves that she has great balance in heels, but other than that, I am not impressed with her at all! Fashion fail!
Hey, at least the owners (Jeff Bozz and Devin Haman) looked alright! Err...right?

The 15th Annual Race to Escape MS event held in Century City, CA attracted a shit-ton of celebrities. The Hilton ladies (and I use the word "ladies") very loosely showed up and they would like to thank fake-tanning for their look. Honestly, though, I can't hate on Nicky's hair color. I feel like she's finally found a tone that looks natural.
Cristian de la Fuente and his injured arm showed up and if you think he look tan, just check out pictures of Lisa Rinna after the jump. Tara Reid (she still does stuff, I guess) showed up as well and I know I've already made my fake-tanning joke, but seriously, these people are ridiculous. They've gone and stained that carpet orange.

First the Globes - now the Grammys?!?
Variety is reporting that the WGA won't grant a waiver for the music industry's awards show.
This means no celebrity presenters, no snappy scripted banter - heck, even the list of award recipients may be smaller than usual!
This year's Grammy nominees include several performers with extensive experience in films and TV; Variety singles out Justin Timberlake, Queen Latifah, Beyonce, Tim McGraw, T.I., Fantasia, and Jack White.
Furthermore, other nominees have historically shown reluctance to cross picket lines - meaning possibly no Bruce Springsteen, Beastie Boys, or Joni Mitchell either!
As for the performances - the real meat of any Grammys broadcast - Variety is less definite, noting only that "in some cases, managers have delayed accepting an invite to perform on the show until there is greater clarity."
Let's hope they get all this sorted out in time!
Hopefully we at least get to see the Oscars - but, then again, if the writers are going after the Grammys, no awards show is safe!
It's official - the actors won't be attending the Golden Globes!
Page Six quotes a statement issued by Screen Actors Guild President Alan Rosenberg yesterday which avows:
"There appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA picket lines to appear on the Golden Globe Awards as acceptors or presenters. We applaud our members for this remarkable show of solidarity for striking Writers Guild of America writers."
Some of the stars nominated for Globes this year include Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, and Keira Knightley.
Sad news indeed - although it certainly doesn't come as a surprise to loyal X17 readers!
Of course, the Globes' loss is the SAG Awards' gain!
Things just keep getting weirder and weirder with Amy Winehouse. This time paparazzi caught her walking around London in the wee hours of the morning wearing nothing but a red bra and a pair of jeans.
Why, you may ask? Good question! According to her rep, it wasn’t the result of a hard night of partying. “She was not on an all-night bender,” claims Amy’s spokesperson when questioned about the 5:45am incident Sunday morning.
It was a rainy evening at the London premiere of Jude Law's new film, "Sleuth," also starring Michael Caine. For Caine, it's deja-vu all over again, having had starred in the original film in 1972 with Laurence Olivier taking on the role of the older man. In this version, Caine is assuming Olivier's original role, with Jude Law stepping in as the new guy. Jude, whose tabloid exploits of recent years seem to have died down some, claims that he harbors no regret in regards to cheating on his former fiancee, Sienna Miller, with his nanny.
"There's no regret. You can't regret. I mean, I've felt regret but I've also refused to allow regret to sow a seed and live in me because I don't believe it."You feel it, it's like guilt, it's like jealousy, it's like all those horrible things and... You've just got to snip them and get them out, because they're no good. Because if you regret, in a way, have you learnt and moved on?"

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are filing a suit, claiming that the television show Californication infringes on their trademark and creates unfair competition between the band and television show.
“‘Californication’ is the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career,” band frontman Anthony Kiedis said in a statement. “For some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right.”
Named as defendants are Showtime Networks, Twilight Time Films, Aggressive Mediocrity and Tom Kapinos. They were not immediately available for comment.
U.S. Trademark Office records show that Showtime filed an application to trademark “Californication” as an ongoing television series, but the rights have not yet been granted. Federal registration is not essential to claim rights in a mark.
Band members want the show to stop using the name and to turn over any profits made by using it.

So, Californication is the signature tune of the band? I guess that kind of depends on how old you are, since for me it is definitely ‘Under the Bridge’, with that video clip featuring Anthony Keidis shirtless, running down the beach…Where was I?
Interestingly, “Californication wasn’t released as the lead single from the album, which is unusual as it is also the title track. It was actually the forth single from the album released, almost a year after the first, which was the grammy award-winning ‘Scar Tissue’.”
Still, the album has featured on a whole heap of surveys, like Rolling Stone’s 100 albums you should hear before you die, and topped FHM’s list of the best albums of the last ten years. The album also signaled the comeback of the Chili Peppers after their less than stellar effort on One Hot Minute, and got a rave review in Rolling Stone. All this reminds me how cool the album actually was.
This is not the first time a band has filed a suit against a television show because of the show’s title, Living Color sued the show In Living Color unsuccessfully, for similar reasons, which is how I predict this will pan out for the Chilis. After all, Californication is in the dictionary now, they can hardly claim to own the term. Unfortunately relentless googling hasn’t revealed who invented the term, but apparently the term was never trademarked by the band in 1999 when the album was released, and Showtime are trying to trademark the term for the show.

Holy crap her face looks perfect. Is she even real? Hayden Panettiere played host the other night at the launch for EA's Need for Speed ProStreet video game at Les Deux last night in Hollywood and I'm guessing had video game nerds' heads exploding. It looks like it was a mixed back of celebrities attending with fellow "Heroes" cast member, Masi Oka, stepping out alongside Hayden, "Chuck" star Zachary Levi and such reality TV spawn as wacky couple, Adrianne Curry an Christopher Knight and Shar Jackson in an unfortunate top. And, as you can see, Mario Lopez was also in attendance, all of his dirty little secrets lurking in those deep dimples of his. I don't trust a man who smiles that much.

That is an awesomely crazy picture of "August Rush" co-stars, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Keri Russell at the premiere of their film. Dang, that JRM sure knows how to give good crazy eye. I'm not completely sure what this movie is about--something about a violinist who gets pregnant or something and then she gives up the baby, or it runs away, and somehow starts conducting an orchestra and at some point, Robin Williams is wearing a cowboy hat. At least, that's what I got out of the preview for the film. I don't really do "uplifting" movies, so I don't know if I'd be able to stomach this one, plus Robin Williams is a bit much these days. In any case, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying these pretty pictures.

"Hairspray" kicked ass and won Best Supporting Actor (Travolta in drag), Ensemble Musical Cast of the Year (was there another one?), and Producers of the Year. This post's true value is that pic of Kirstie Alley posing with Brad Pitt. You know Brad's like "what did I do to earn this whack-a-doo hanging all over me"? Kirstie's lookin' all lacivious like she wants to dip that in sour cream and go to town. Screw Jenny Craig! An attractive starlet like Amanda Bynes needs to shovel less makeup on. She should stick with the fresh face and not the Kim Kardashian double input's ok look. Jennifer Connelly keeps doing weird things to herself. It's like she's determined not to look stunning so no one thinks she's not a serious actress. The dress has improved but why the hair chop? Did a free bowl of soup come with that?

Do you think Kate Bosworth's happy? A ton of hot female movie stars were on hand for "Elle" magazine's Women In Hollywood tribute at the Four Seasons last night. Amy Adams, Lauren Bacall, Scarlett Johansson, Kate Bosworth, Jennifer Connelly and Diane Lane, and director Julie Taymor were the honorees. It was a lot of skeletons in designer dresses. Lauren Bacall wasn't feeling the ruckus:
"I've never been in the middle of anything like this before," Bacall, 83, said about being honored along with other women. The legendary actress seemed a bit overwhelmed by the red carpet frenzy. "You know, I can't answer a serious question. My brain is now addled because of the screaming voices."Get that lady a highball and a chair. She doesn't need to be subjected to that! She's a treasure! For some reason, I like Scarlett's Marilyn Monroe in a windtunnel do. But I think Jennifer Connelly is much too old to be wearing Holly Hobbie dresses to red carpet events. She needs to step her game up and embrace her hotness.

Hmm...that blog title might not actually make any sense, if I took the time to really analyze it. Fortunately for me, I don't care. I just watched the trailer for the movie, "Wristcutters," and at first I assumed it was going to be some depressing, annoying movie about people who like to cut themselves and that there would be lots of shots of teenaged girls looking pensive and having mental breakdowns fully-clothed in their showers, curled up in fetal positions. I was very happy to discover that instead, it appeared to be a dark romantic comedy about a man who commits suicide, only to find that life continues after death in much the same way that life was on Earth--only you're dead. When he learns that the girlfriend he left behind offed herself a month after him, he enlists two new acquaintances from his new death-life to help him track her down. In the trailer, I also saw that Tom Waits and Gob Bluth (I know, I know, his name is Will Arnett, but whatever) are in the film, which bode well for it, in my opinion.

You know that's what Cindy's feelin'. Shut your yap, Teri Hatcher. No one's buying! You know wherever she walks, rats die because of all the poison in her mug. Here's a bunch of fame victims gathered together for the 4th annual Hollywood Style awards at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles. These awards celebrate the people behind the scenes who "shape the look of Hollywood". If they were responsible for Ms. Hatcher's frightening visage, they should be on trial for war crimes. Jaime Pressley looks like a mug shot off "The Smoking Gun" but with more Mac. She got pinched for loitering and she's nervous because her best girlfriend Tonya outran the cops and is currently f*cking Jamie's boyfriend behind the Rollerdome. Jamie's gonna have to cut her when she gets bailed out. Pete Wentz is so womanly he's almost a tampon. And why do I have the cheese in me to want to snuggle with Brett Ratner? You know he's one of those odious coked up Hollywood bottom feeder types, but still - bears do it for me. Mondays obviously suck because this is the meanest post I've written in a long time. Wow. I'd go back and delete but Monday is Jealous Venom Day!

After I first listened to the bonus track on Beyonce's "B-Day," the extended version of "Get Me Bodied," I subsequently became curious to see what a live interpretation of her dance instructions would look like. I was wondering, that is, until this gentleman put together a routine to illustrate his version. Honestly, I think I burned about one thousand calories watching him dance. Also, it is surprising to see how quickly this little kid aged in just a matter of months.
Hindsight is a sad 20/20. Here is Keri Hilson, the amazingly talented 24 year old that wrote Britney's "Gimme More" and is featured in Timbaland's "The Way I Are" on the red carpet of the VMA's excited to see Spears performance.
Remember Neil and Lauren breaking it down to "The Way I Are" on "So You Think You Can Dance? " There is probably an easy joke in here about Britney and not thinking she can dance but enough has been said by now. I don't want to be the straw that breaks the camel toes back. I don't think I could live with myself.
The perfect marriage of charity and fashion can be found in the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation, which is a charitable organization that hosts a variety of celebrity-driven charity auctions, featuring many outfits made famous by those celebrities who have worn them and donated them to the cause. Basically, the clothes are sold and the profits go toward various children's charities and everybody wins because the celebs get to be all glamorous and philanthropic at the same time. Here are some of the celebs who were out and about at a recent event. Eva Longoria is looking good--someone knows how to keep on good terms with her hair people *ahem* Britney, take notes. Also, crazy-faced Phoebe Price is doing her part for charity, but I have to say that the look she's giving the camera is scaring the bejeesus out of me. I think I might make it my honorary desktop background for Halloween.

Goldie Hawn, Paris Hilton and Terrence Howard were among the many celebrities who gathered for the first annual Playing For Good International Philanthropic Summit in Mallorca, Spain. Eva Longoria hosted the gala celebration and presentation of the 2007 Awards of Charitable Excellence. According to the press release:
Oscar nominated actor Terrence Howard presented legendary Oscar and Golden Globe winning actress Goldie Hawn with an award and donation for her charity, The Hawn Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting children by advancing mindfulness training in educational, healthcare and community-basted settings. Also honoured were Spread the Net, Millennium Promise and Keep a Child Alive.

The Los Angeles Times celebrated the launch of its new Image section at the new bar in in the Beverly Hills Hotel, Nineteen12, who co-hosted the event. Local Los Angelenos, Lauren Conrad ("The Hills"), Milo Ventigmilia ("Heroes"), Garcelle Beauvais ("Models Inc."...did you enjoy that old-school reference?) were all on-hand among other guests to enjoy the festivities, which, judging from these red-carpet pix were pretty damned well-behaved. What? No Tara Reid or Bai Ling? What a shame, since with those two, you know you're going to see at least one terror-inducing nipple on the red-carpet. But yes, it looks like everyone was fully-clothed and acting grown here last Thursday evening, as they enjoyed some cocktails and nibblies.
