Rob Shuter may be single most well-qualified man for his job in all the celebrity media. His job, of course, is editor of photo-happy, celebrity-friendly, "What interview questions would you like to answer, Britney?" pseudo-magazine OK! But set aside your revulsion at the existence of this pair of celebrity culture warriors, and you come to realize that we can all learn something from the way the man does business. His reputation is (grudgingly) improving along with his personal appearance (pic: old on left, new on right). Shuter told CoverAwards that his magazine is "celebrity-fair." Classic, classic. Break it down:
Shuter was a celebrity flack before he came to OK. So when he got the job, some of the esteemed journalists at the magazine were angry at this publicist interloping on their territory. But really, a PR guy is much better suited to the job than someone with a history on the editorial side.
The editor of OK essentially works to broker deals with celebrities and their managers and publicists. That was Shuter's gig before, on the other side of things, so he knows just how to make this work. His competitors, who came up as reporters and editors, will never have that experience. He could be functionally illiterate. No problem!
Celeb magazines are driven by photos—exclusive photos. Who fucking cares what OK's brain damaged stories say? People want to look at pretty photos of famous people that they can't get anywhere else, and that's what they get from Shuter. Plus, appearance on shows like ET and Access Hollywood usually materialize only after the exclusive magazine deal has been closed, meaning that celebrities have to deal with one of the mags no matter what. And since OK is the friendliest and one of the most financially generous, bingo.
Rob Shuter is a shameless man in a shameless job. Many lesser people would be embarrassed to be him. But Shuter can say with a straight face that he's "proud of the product" and dismiss competitors as "haters" and be totally genuine. He's worth every penny.
"Celebrity-fair" is the new "right-sizing."

Earlier this week we gave you a brief history of Rob Shuter, the shameless former celebrity flack whose various transgressions have reduced him to editing OK! Magazine. That post brought back some memories for Michael Lucas, famous gay porn performer and impresario (pictured, on the left). According to Lucas, he once snubbed Shuter's request for love, which sparked a neverending campaign by the uberflack to exact his revenge! Worst of all, Lucas says, Shuter even used poor supermodel Naomi Campbell for his own nefarious ends. Lucas' full, telling letter is below.
Hey guys,
I just read your article about Rob Shuter and I have my own story on this guy that you might find interesting, useful or not.
I met him first at a party where he told me he wanted to talk business. He came over to my apartment several days later and after a few minutes, I understood that it was nothing about business, the guy was just horny. Nevertheless, he went into a long "proposal" to work on the project with me and Naomi Campbell which would be "groundbreaking." I am a very ambitious person, but I am also realistic so I didn't even listen and was thinking of how to get rid of the liar. When the guy made a move, I very politely declined.
Since then, this guy has done everything in his power to make me suffer for that.
I was always a guest at Heatherette show but I am no longer welcomed any longer. Lately, I found out that this was Rob's doing. Apparently, he has or had something to do with Heatherette's people.
During another fashion week, I was a guest of Timothy Greenfield-Sanders and was sitting in the first row for the Huricane Relief fashion show. The next day, there was an article in Page Six accusing me of "hiding under a makeup table backstage for hours to get in." When I asked someone I knew at the New York Post how such an article could come about, he told me that all information was provided by Rob Shuter. Indeed, I was behind the stage that night, but not to sit under the makeup table. I had a very good time socializing with Carmen Dell'Orefice (who I later had a photoshoot with for Korean GQ), Timothy Sanders, and others. I also saw Rob, who came over to me and told me that he was Naomi Campbell's manager and that she would like to take a picture with me. He brought me to her table where she was giving interviews while getting her hair done and told me to wait. After 30 minutes of waiting, I decided to go back to my seat, as the show was about the start. Mr. Shuter was just enjoying my waiting while he knew the picture with Naomi Campbell would never happen. He just kept saying, "Michael, just another minute!"
I rarely meet such a vicious person as Rob Shuter who put so much energy toward making others miserable. And with his looks, shouldn't he be used to rejection?
OK! is the celebrity magazine that is the most willingly manipulated by celebrity flacks, which is really saying something. So it's perfectly appropriate that the magazine just promoted sleazy former celebrity uberflack Rob Shuter to its executive editor position. That's because Shuter is skilled at doing the two things that OK! is most famous for: lying on behalf of celebrities, and losing other people's money. Even he, the great fabulist, couldn't write a more sickening script than this.
Who is Rob Shuter? Once upon a time, he was one of the most powerful celebrity flacks in America, repping clients like Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson. Eventually he got fired from his agency, Dan Klores Communications, lost his big clients, and ended up at OK!, which is really where he belongs. What went wrong?
In unrelated rumormongering, there was gossip earlier this year that Shuter may have been somehow involved in a purported FBI investigation of In Touch magazine for "payments to at least one editor in exchange for prominent placement of certain B-list celebrities." Supposedly some shady British cabal of celebrity flacks and gossip reporters was under scrutiny. We hoped Shuter was wrapped up in it! Alas, no evidence ever confirmed the rumors. And to be fair, he even has some admirers among the gossip press, who say he's friendly and witty.
So what will Shuter be doing for OK!? A good guess: helping them continue to spend big with no apparent monetary return. We hear that OK! is the leading bidder in the war for Angelina Jolie's upcoming baby pictures, with a sum rumored to be around $15 million for worldwide rights. That's in line with the magazine's history of profligacy; we also hear that they've yet to turn a profit, despite an investment in the nine-figure range.
And Shuter, the fabricating flack, will fit right in. One of the best quotes I ever heard while working at PRWeek was from an editor at OK! who gushed on and on about how nice the mag was to its friends in PR, summing it all up by explaining, "We work directly with publicists and celebrities themselves to get the real story." Sure. All together now in the race to the bottom.

UPDATE: Sheryl Lowe has released a statement in response to the most recent countersuit filed against her and her husband, Rob.
Here are some salient bits from Sheryl's statement: "I find it deeply offensive the false allegation that I would use racially insensitive comments." Sheryl added, "I'm certain that my dearest and longtime friend, and godfather to my children, Marcus Allen would beg to differ with their charges." I love it! Your honor, I would like to call to the witness stand, my black friend!
Additionally, Sheryl said, "To falsely attack my husband is one thing, to attack me is another, but to do this to our son reveals not only their lack of character, but how far they are willing to go to play the 'lawsuit lotto.'"
Meanwhile, I have no legal expertise, so I'm guessing this is what a gag order looks like in motion.

Another former nanny for Rob Lowe and his family is accusing her former employer of sexual harassment. Laura Boyce worked for the Lowe family for seven months last year and filed a countersuit yesterday, alleging that Sheryl Lowe's inappropriate behavior fostered an "extremely sexually offensive and hostile work environment."
Boyce's attorney is Gloria Allred, who is also representing Jessica Gibson, the other nanny suing the Lowe family for sexual harassment. In addition, Boyce is claiming that she was wrongfully terminated and is accusing the family of other labor code violations.
More allegations that Sheryl Lowe often walked around the home naked, "completely exposing herself" have surfaced in this new suit. Oh Lord, this is going to get very awkward, if it isn't already.

The drama keeps coming in the case of Rob Lowe versus his nanny accusers, as his attorney, Larry Stein, issued a statement late Wednesday in response to a second nanny’s sexual harassment claim against the actor and his wife.
According to press reports, Lowe’s camp is “pretty much calling it a blatant attempt on lawyer Gloria Allred’s part to divert attention from her other client, Nanny No. 1, who’s also suing the Lowes.”
We’ve all heard the old adage, “The third time is the charm.” And it looks like Carmen Electra is hoping it’s true, given that it’s just been announced that she’s engaged.
The former Baywatch babe was briefly married to NBA stud Dennis Rodman, and most recently to Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. So it’s no surprise that her current fiancé is a rock guitarist as well.
Rob Lowe's ongoing nanny scandal has prompted him to lament to Entertainment Tonight, "We live in a time where anybody can say anything about anybody." Now, I know he's referring to the mass media and his particular dilemma, but taken out of context it kind of sounds like the ol' guy is lamenting freedom of speech. He described the legal entanglements in which he and his family are engaged with his former nanny as "very sad."
Meanwhile, here's Rob looking relaxed with his undone tie slung around his neck and he appears to be accompanied by what looks like someone on the production staff. I like to imagine that the photo of the two of them after the jump was taken during a conversation she was having with him about how big the former nanny told her Rob's penis was--because I'm clearly the kind of degenerate to which Rob is referring.

Jessica Gibson, the former nanny for Rob Lowe and his family, first got the job through her half-sister, Jamie. After seven years of working for him, Gibson is now suing Lowe for sexual harassment. Also, Rob is suing her so it's a sue-party, baby!
The story first broke when Rob blogged about it on The Huffington Post, claiming that Jessica was threatening to make her accusations public if she wasn't paid $1.5 million.
For her part, Jessica's half-sister Jamie worked as a nanny for the Lowe family and introduced them to Jessica in 2000. Jamie later became her assistant and quit her job after she married. According to Jim Gibson, father of both women, "She was happy to get out of there. She couldn't take it anymore. Nothing really bad happened like it did with Jessie, but Jamie was overworked and couldn't stand it."
Now, I'm aware that I don't know all the facts, but why Jamie encourage family to work for people who are such difficult employers? Maybe I'm just biased because Jessica came off like a total religious cult member during her interview on the Today show. Is it just me, or is anyone else bothered by the placement of Gloria Allred's hands off-screen in that video?

TMZ.com: So what do you do after you tell the world that your ex-boss allegedly asked you to touch his penis -- why, you do a photo shoot with People magazine of course! Sources tell TMZ Rob Lowe's former nanny Jessica Gibson blabbed to her pals back home... Read more
His career is the definition of longevity in Hollywood, but Rob Lowe may have a pretty messy lawsuit on his hands.
It seems his former nanny, Jessica Gibson (24), is asserting that the “West Wing” actor sexually harassed her during her seven year tenure as the family’s nanny.

Rob Lowe, his wife Sheryl and their two boys in 2004
I keep visiting The Smoking Gun and hoping they’ll post the countersuit against Rob Lowe by his nanny of seven years, Jessica Gibson. TMZ claims to have seen the lawsuit, and they say the details are juicy and that Gibson claims Lowe showed her his penis on many occasions, and masturbated in front of her.
In her suit, Gibson claims Lowe not only groped her, he repeatedly exposed his “flaccid penis” and his “erect penis” to her, repeatedly asked her “to touch his penis,” repeatedly masturbated in front of her, showed her pornographic images on her computer, asked her to give him a massage and tell him dirty stories … and that’s just Rob!
She then says Rob’s wife Sheryl walked around naked –”completely exposing herself” — made “numerous sexually vulgar comments about male genitalia,” “would talk about her sex life” with Rob and said that “she would never have a boyfriend because only a married man would want to f*** her.”
Gibson says the Lowes paid her $18.00 an hour for her services. She’s suing them for sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment, retaliation, unpaid off-the-clock work, overtime wages and unpaid meal periods. She’s asking for damages in excess of $50,000. She also said on this morning’s “Today” show that she never tried to extort money from the Lowes, as Rob has alleged.
[From TMZ]
Gibson was on The Today Show this morning with her aggressive celebrity lawyer, Gloria Allred, and she came off as less than believable to me. She looked like she was trying to keep herself from smiling like a chesire cat on several occasions, and she wasn’t able to effectively explain why she stayed with the Lowes for seven years if all of this harassment was happening to her there. TMZ notes that she left her nanny job to work at a doctor’s office for the same pay, only to ask to return. She returned to work for the Lowes twice, so unless she had nowhere else to go it doesn’t seem likely that she would have asked to go back if the abuse was as she claims. Gibson’s older sister also worked for the Lowes for seven years. It just doesn’t add up to me.
If all of this happened as she states, of course she should be compensated, but then why didn’t she go to the police and file a complaint? Instead she waited seven years, hired a celebrity lawyer and is going on television to talk about her civil suit seeking damages. We’ll have to see if she does the whole talkshow circuit and if her story gets any better with time. She needs to hire someone to help her look scared and reticent, not smirking and defiant.
Rob Lowe came out a couple of weeks back claiming that a former nanny was trying to extort some large sums of cash from him and his wife, and filed a lawsuit against her. Well the nanny, Jessica Gibson, 24 is striking back. She's hired celebrattorney Gloria Allred and has filed a sexual harassment suit against Lowe.
Gibson claims that Lowe "placed his hands inside her pants" several times, and also grabbed her ass. She also alleges that Lowe's wife Sheryl walked around naked and discussed her sex life with Lowe in "vulgar terms".
Lowe's attorney is combating this by asking why Gibson returned to Lowe's employ even after these alleged incidents took place.
"I love the children. I needed the job. I thought it would get better, and I was scared," Gibson says.
You know that the long ago sex tape of Rob diddling the underage girls is going to be brought up. This chick's lawyer is already putting out DVD copies for the jury and getting it up on YouTube.
Rob Lowe and his wife Sheryl are suing their former nanny for or violating their confidentiality agreement, defamation, and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress to the tune of $1,000,000.
In the papers that the couple filed on Monday at the Los Angeles Superior Court, they claim that the woman, who worked for the family for seven years, "made statements in violation of her promise not to and has made false statements about Rob Lowe and his wife, Sheryl Lowe."
Though the court papers do not go into the specifics of what the nanny might have revealed about the Lowes' personal lives, Rob did write an article yesterday for the Huffington Post in which he shares some more personal thoughts.
In the article, titled Household Betrayal, Rob states that "a former employee is demanding my wife Sheryl and I pay her $1.5 million by the end of the week or she will accuse us both of a vicious laundry list of false terribles." He copied and pasted texts from the former nanny into the article, and even said, "No one intimidates my family...We will defend ourselves with vigor and without fear."
"Household Betrayal"??? Sounds like the title of a brillz new TV drama!
What's with all the suing in Hollywood today? First Lindsay's bodyguard, now Rob Lowe's nanny???
Rob Lowe was informed by his family's former babysitter that she needed $1.5 million otherwise she would go public with accusations against the actor and his wife.
But the West Wing star certainly isn't going to stand for what he calls, "an attempt to damage and humiliate not only my wife and me, but our two young sons as well."
Instead he got to the media first, by writing a blog for The Huffington Post, entitled 'Household Betrayal,' which includes examples of how the sitter quickly changed her tune a few weeks after quitting. She worked for the family for seven years.
He wrote, 'When people make false claims of harassment particularly for financial gain, it must be defended vigorously and openly, for it weakens the claims of legitimate victims.'
Rob also noted in the post that the unnamed woman told a colleague she had a crush on him, voicing her wish that he would get a divorce.
Seems he is as good of a writer as he is an actor -- and willing to take a risk rather than pay 'hush money' for something he claims never took place.
'No one intimidates my family,' he wrote. 'My wife and I have many former and long term employees, all of whom know this woman, who can and will refute any claims of anything inappropriate in our home, or anywhere else. We will defend ourselves with vigor and without fear.'

Australian actor Michael Caton a few years ago starred in a film titled Strange Bedfellows, where he and Paul Hogan pretend to be gay in order to claim financial benefits.
Sound similiar to the plot of I now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry? Well, it is. And Caton claims that he gave a DVD of the film to Rob Schneider, and that ‘You owe me one pal.’
Schneider now gives him one, in an open letter featured in the Sydney Morning Herald.
“It is true you gave me a DVD copy of Strange Bedfellows but I must confess I’ve never watched it, as it is not on the same format as I have and it makes quite a nice drink coaster,” he writes.
Schneider, who plays an Asian minister in Chuck and Larry, claims the movie is based on a true story about two firemen from Virginia in the 1970s.
“I know that you recently made an early (and deserved) exit on Dancing with the Stars, still in my wildest imagination I never could see you as one who would ever become ‘bitter’,” he writes to Caton. “Unfortunately, that is the conclusion that you have forced me to come to. Now Paul Hogan I can understand!”
I thought the open letter might be a joke, but apparently Rob Schneider has an opinion on a lot of things, and an open letter is often his way of dealing with it. He took out an advertisement about a journalist who called him a third-rate comic after the first installment of Deuce Bigalow, and last year he took out another vowing never to work with anti-Semitic Mel Gibson. This week he’s commented on Dina Lohan’s parenting skills.
Now, script analysis of the two films has been undertaken and Strange Bedfellows producer Shana believes that legal action may result.
“The initial results have caused us to be more confident that there has been a copyright violation,” she said. “We are investigating all avenues open to us.”
One thing isn’t clear to me – when Michael Caton made the initial ‘you owe me one’ comment, was he serious? Or was it that dry, underplayed Australian joke-tone that doesn’t translate very well to America? Have we got open letters appearing in Michael Caton’s local paper because of a throw away comment?
Overall, the whole thing just doesn’t seem very gentlemanly.
Note by Celebitchy: I checked IMDB and couldn’t figure out how Schneider was involved with I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry apart from a bit part in the film. The story is that Canton gave Schneider the script for Strange Bedfellows when they were working together on The Animal. Canton thinks that Schneider passed it on to Adam Sandler. Strange Bedfellows, which came out in 2004, is described by Wikipedia as “a movie about a straight businessman and a straight mechanic both volunteer fire fighters who lodge some forms indicating that they were gay in order to obtain a financial advantage. Upon being investigated by a government officer, they must act gay in order to pull off the illusion.” Sounds just like I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry down to the professions of the pretend gay guys and the plot.
Rob Schneider is shown in the header photo at the Kids’ Choice Awards on 4/1/06.
