“My children are perfect, and you think, ‘How can I help sustain their state of bliss and progress?’ And really beating up the planet the way we have is not going to do that. I drive a biodiesel car. I try to set goals that are achievable and then once we get those down, find some more goals that are achievable and keep going a little bit, as opposed to saying, ‘I am going to be completely waste-free in my house’ and all this kind of stuff. It’s just a little bit at a time. And if we all did a little bit at a time, it would just be so impactful.”
–Julia Roberts in an interview with Britain’s Daily Express Newspaper

“The looks on their faces were priceless. Some of them didn’t even believe us [when they saw the gifts]. They thought we were joking. Everything (Baby Bjorn products, cribs, mattresses and toys from Fisher-Price) they got, we got, so everything that will be in their nursery, will be in our nursery.”
Nicole Richie and partner Joel Madden officially launched their Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation at the Los Angeles Free Clinic on Monday in Hollywood. To the incredible surprise of over 100 expectant and new moms, the foundation’s first order of business was to throw a massive baby shower. More than $200,000 worth of gifts were handed out to the bewildered groups of parents. From the article,
“‘We named it the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation because we each have families and our families are close, and our family is involved,’ Richie said. By her side with his arm stroking her back during moments in the conference, Madden quipped, ‘We’re lucky that we have families that get along and love each other,’ adding, ‘I think it’s great that our child will grow up as a part of that family.’”
What an absolutely wonderful moment for needy parents in the LA area. It’s great to see Joel and Nicole giving back and getting involved. As Madden said, “We don’t really get to share our lives with people. It’s nice to connect with people on a real level.”

As a woman expecting her fourth child and still maintaining the body of a supermodel, actress Brooke Burke knows a thing or two about getting back into shape after a pregnancy. The 36-year old recently launched a new online baby store called Baboosh Baby featuring eco-friendly post-partum belly wraps, organic stretch-mark oils and tees and recycled diaper bags. From the site,
“As a Hollywood mom, I’ve met tons of interesting people and had access to the best stylists and designers, as well as the trendiest products. But still, I was unable to find some of the key things I need before, during, and after my three pregnancies. I wanted to give my body its best shot at staying healthy and regaining its shape naturally and quickly. This inspired me to create baboosh.”
The sexy wraps come in at $62, while tees are an affordable $18. The diaper bag — made from recycled sails — will knock you back $68. For the rest of the goods, check out Brooke’s site!

Distinctive Assets, an entertainment marketing and corporate gifting company (typing that makes me feel rich), is putting together a “gift box” for celebrity parents full of various odds and ends for their kiddies this holiday season. Some of the celebrities selected include, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Diana Krall, Elvis Costello, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard and Will Ferrell. In a step towards the “green” direction, Distinctive Assets has selected Farmerkids Organics, a NYC based organic kids clothing and accessory company, to participate by donating one of their organic cotton shirts or hand-stitched hats to the mix.
Farmerkids Organics boasts a product that is unbleached, pesticide-free and is made right here in the ol’ USA. The products are simple in nature and packaged with scraps of cotton, recycled paper bags and hemp cords to tie it all together-proving you don’t have to sacrifice Mother Earth for baby Pitt. To organify the little tyke in your life you can check out their whole line here.

The organic baby revolution continues with stylish, beautiful 100% all-natural blankets from Robbie Adrian. The company was founded after the owners had difficulty finding baby products that were both environmentally-friendly and stylish — something that’s becoming increasingly less of an issue these days. But, jumping into the scene early, their fashionable organic blankets are now receiving a steady following from some of the biggest names in entertainment.
Halle Berry, Dave Matthews, and Sheryl Crow are only some of the celebs wrapping up tots in these chic blankets. Since Berry has decided to go “green” with her nusery, she’s received a bunch of fleece chocolate, natural and eucalyptus blankets for her upcoming baby shower. Dave Matthew’s son, Oliver, received the Velour Nursery Ocean Blue organic and silk blanket, while Sheryl Crow’s son Wyatt picked up a gift box. In addition, Robbie Adrian donated one of their largest blankets, in Crow’s name, to a children’s home she supports - The Delta Children’s Home in Missouri.
We’re always happy to support new companies making a difference for the planet and healthier living. We wish Robbie Adrian all the best in expanding their business and getting more babies swaddled in green. Hit their official site here for more.

“You can’t help but be aware, because now we are a home of five people. We make a lot of garbage. How can we make less garbage? This is our plight. I use Seventh Generation (chlorine-free, non-toxic) diapers for Finn and Hazel, and then I was turned on to the (plastic-free, flushable) gDiapers [for Henry]. It is flushable, but you’ve got to stir that thing! If you don’t really break it all the way up, it doesn’t go all the way down.”
– Julia Roberts in a new interview with Vanity Fair

We mentioned earlier last week the baby shower thrown for Sheryl Crow by Healthy Child, Healthy World — and the introduction of Wee Generation (a collaboration between Healthy Child, Healthy World, Seventh Generation, and Baby Style) with a new product contest to design an eco-friendly diaper bag. Now, for those that seek nothing but the latest in baby shower news, we have more information.
Crow appears in a new video on the Wee Generation site (’Wee’ is just fun to say.) talking about why it’s important to her to raise a child in a healthy, non-toxic environment. She praises the Healthy Child, Healthy World initiative and is pretty candid in her excitement of becoming a new mom and doing everything she can to apply a green lifestyle to the experience. No ‘one square of toilet paper’ jokes seem to have made the cut.
The Wee Generation site itself is well done and already has a good deal of comments from Moms (and Dads?) looking for a quality green bag. You can help design it — and then either win the final creation or the grand prize of a green nursery makeover in your home. Expecting parents everywhere — jump to the site. Don’t forget to check out Sheryl’s video while you’re at it!
Thanks to Lee for the tip!
