Vanity Fair's Young Hollywood Royalty: Rich and Thick [How To Be Famous]

Who will be America's next top big thing? No, seriously, who? Everyone likes to guess. We recently speculated about future tabloid fixtures, and now Vanity Fair has put together a list of the new princes and princesses of Hollywood. Look! There, of course, are the Jonas Brothers, the sexy smooth kids of Gossip Girl and promising hottie boombalotties like Hunter Parrish from Weeds and Kristen Stewart. We synced up on a couple of people, Emma Stone and the GG kids, but VF took its typical turn toward the misguided in several of its Young Hollywood predictions.

Can someone explain Emma Roberts to me? She starred in the failed Nancy Drew movie and in a film about a mermaid alongside something called JoJo (not a monkey.) And yet, everyone keeps hooting and hollering about how she's going to be the next movie star to eat the planet. She must have the best PR people in the business.

Another misstep is the inclusion of Christopher Mintz-Plasse, the squiggly McLovin' nerd from the bawdy teen sex fest Superbad. Sure his character was funny in the movie, but the kid wasn't really acting. He's kinda like Michael Cera—awkward in real life and on screen—in that he's probably not really acting. Mintz-Plasse is a one trick pony, and once everyone wises up and stops casting the abominable Jon Heder in movies, they'll get rid of ol' McLovin' too.

So yeah, look at the article and ogle the pretty pictures. Youth certainly fades, but maybe these photos won't, as long as they kick around the internet. Hopefully these colts will be able to look at these photos many, many years from now and smile and wistfully remember a time when the world patted their heads and, however briefly, told them they were special.

Oh, and thanks for the Gawker shout-out, VF! "Celebrity garbage-disposal unit," eh? Hell, we'll take it.

When I moved to New York, I had no idea that it was going to be im-fucking-possible to get a decent night's sleep, ever. I also have the frequent urge to retreat to a dark room and curl up in the fetal position whenever I'm in the city--but don't we all? Still, I never imagined paying for a nap in a special, quiet, warm, nap-pod. Nor could anyone imagine that this early-mid 00's trend would still be kicking it!
The Japanese had already figured this out in the 80s, with their coffin-style nap-pods, stacked two high, designed for businessmen. Slightly larger and less dehumanizing capsule hotels have sprung up in Europe and on the Upper East Side.

And then when Metronaps opened in the Empire State Building in 2004, the press went wild--micronapping for New Yorkers! And the trend story just wouldn't die. Last year, Business 2.0: "It remains to be seen whether napping ends up being 2006's version of the oxygen bar." It has not.

So, they got me. I was tired. Whatever! I went to sleep in the pods of Yelo.

Inside, a young girl was being attended to by a gentleman explaining the special sleep beds to her. She basically wanted a guarantee that she would fall asleep during her scheduled naptime.

"Nine outta ten," the man said, "although if you really want to make sure, you might want to schedule for thirty minutes, you know."

A nice woman had me fill out some forms, which is always relaxing, then gave me cinnamon tea and took me to my pod--which, to be fair, is larger than typical pod-size and octagonal. It had a futuristic feel: the lighting was pink and white noise played, creating a sleeping-on-an-airplane vibe.

She put me in the chair and hit "recline" so that I was lying down but with my feet elevated in a sitting position. This was supposed to slow my heartbeat. She put a soft blanket on me and left. I sort of slept. The strange sleeping position created a sensation of floating in space. When the time was up, the pink lights slowly flicked back on.

It was totally relaxing! And as soon as I stepped outside, I started checking my text messages.
Looks: Is Philadelphia Really The Ugliest?

When a CNN Headline News-Travel and Leisure poll revealed that our own "sixth borough," Philadelphia, was home to the least attractive people in the United States, a guy we know who used to live there sent an email to his fellow Philly expats living in NYC. It read, "You know how I always say in Philadelphia, the two-eyed man is king?" But some people would beg to differ.
"I don't know what their methodology is but I am actually confused by this finding. Because, like, unless you have something against snaggletoothed skinny-fat guys with sleeve tattoos and beer guts and probably some very dated piercings whose idea of making an effort is carrying around a customized messenger bag, Philadelphia is a total man mecca," complained Jo, 28, a blogger who used to live in Philly. She isn't kidding that that is her type.

"I do think that if you were what the Philly kids would call a "reg," that it would be slightly harder to find a doable mate," she conceded.

Huh, what's a "reg?" Perhaps Lorraine, a 30-year-old writer and fellow former Philadelphian, can shed some light: "Well my neighborhood wasn't that ugly, but outside my neighborhood was basically a lot of poor white trash. And poor black trash, and poor Hispanic trash. Not to be racist or classist or anything but... yeah."

Sally, another former Philadelphian, contends that it really is that ugly, and yes, because of the poors: "There are some pretty people in Center City and in the suburbs, but there are a lot more poor people everywhere else, so that probably contributes to the overall ugliness rating. Because you never really see a pretty poor, only in the movies. In life they generally have bad teeth and poor skin and bad dye jobs, and the corn products they eat make them odd-shaped. So really, Forbes is just picking on the poors."

Still, Jo contends that there are plenty of cities in the US uglier than her former hometown. "Seriously, also CHICAGO? I mean holy fuck, SEATTLE???? These are really ugly places. I was like the most attractive person in Seattle." And she is hot, but.

"I don't know Philly that well; I'd equate ugly with impoverished. So Detroit would be up there," claimed Derek, 26, a travel writer. But Alan, 27, a writer who's originally from Chattanooga, makes a case for an entire region. "The vast majority of people in the south are, wholly and completely, aesthetically retarded.
Fat, slovenly, slack-jawed, mouth-breathers with hollowness in their eyes." He's probably right because chances are, they don't even have messenger bags there.
