Actor and country singer/songwriter Jerry Reed, has died early Monday of complications from emphysema at 71.
As a singer in the 1970s and early 1980s, Reed had a string of hits that included “Amos Moses,” “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot,” “East Bound and Down,” “She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft)” and “The Bird.”
He first established himself as a songwriter. Elvis Presley recorded two of his songs, “U.S. Male” and “Guitar Man” (both in 1968). He also wrote the hit “A Thing Called Love,” which was recorded in 1972 by Johnny Cash. He also wrote songs for Brenda Lee, Tom Jones, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole and the Oak Ridge Boys.
In the mid-1970s, he began acting in movies such as “Smokey and the Bandit” with Burt Reynolds, usually as a good ol’ boy. But he was an ornery heavy in “Gator,” directed by Reynolds, and a hateful coach in 1998’s “The Waterboy,” starring Adam Sandler.
Reed and Kris Kristofferson paved the way for Nashville music personalities to make inroads into films. Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers (TV movies) followed their lead.

With his success on the awesome 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin's been enjoying his reclaimed status as beloved funny dude for the last couple of years now. But raise the subject of his ex-wife Kim Basinger and you'll be treated to hot flashes of psycho "you're a little pig" voicemail dad. In a profile in the upcoming New Yorker, he asks, "Think I'm walking stiffly? Yeah, there's a 120-pound actress on my back." Baldwin's gripe, he says, is that Basinger is constantly trying to drive a wedge between him and their 12-year-old daughter, Ireland.
"Parental alienation is about people who narcissistically project their whole reality onto a child: 'I don't need you, so the child doesn't need you.' The goal of the alienating parent is to kill contiguous time. People need reliability. They need regularity. And I've been the victim of a campaign to kill all that. You wind up being more an uncle than a father."
He also says that when he and Basinger first split up, she thought he was trying to murder her. They were looking at a house for him to rent near a cliff, Baldwin recalls, when Basinger wigged out. "[I said,] 'You've got to come over here and look at this!' She said, 'No, no, come back, we've got to go. We're late.' And then I thought, 'She thinks I'm going to throw her off this cliff!' " [P6]

Thousands of mourners, gathered at Chicago’s House of Hope church on Saturday for the funeral of comedian Bernie Mac on Saturday. Bernie died on Saturday August 9th at age 50, after losing his battle with pneumonia.
Samuel L. Jackson,Chris Rock, Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and Reverend Jesse Jackson were among those who attended the service where more than 6,000 fans and locals crowded outside to bid their final farewells. ackson, who recently filmed the movie Soul Men with Bernie, remembered him as “that kid from Chicago who wanted to make everybody laugh”.
He added: “He never turned down that kid for an autograph.” A slideshow of photos from Bernie’s life was played on video screens and letters of condolence from children, TV host Oprah Winfrey and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama were read aloud.
The Chicago White Sox organization, Mac’s beloved baseball team, presented his widow Rhonda with a jersey bearing his name and the number one. Also honored at the memorial was another of Mac’s Soul Men costars, Isaac Hayes, who died one day after Bernie, at the age of 65.

Pioneering singer, Isaac Hayes, has reportedly been found dead at his home.
A family member, found Isaac unresponsive on the floor near a still running treadmill in his home and called for help. A Shelby County sheriff’s deputy responded the call.
Isaac was then taken to Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee where he was pronounced dead at 2:08am. He passed at 65-years-old.
The Shelby Country Sheriff’s department will continue their investigation, but at this point no foul play is suspected.
Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr. born August 20, 1942, came from a humble surroundings, and grew up picking cotton in Tennessee.
The album “Hot Buttered Soul” made Hayes a star in 1969. His shaven head, gold chains and sunglasses gave him a compelling visual image. A self-taught musician, Isaac won an Academy Award for best original song and two Grammy awards for his music for the film, “Shaft.” He received a third Grammy for his album “Black Moses.” In the early 1970s, Hayes laid the groundwork for disco, and for romantic singers like Barry White.
His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show “South Park.”

The death of comedian/actor Bernie Mac at such a relatively young age is a real tragedy. There are a few new details that have come out that I want to share. A few of which make me wonder about his rep. and what his motivation for making the statements attributed to him. As we reported previously Bernie was in the hospital with pneumonia, but his rep allegedly said he was in stable condition and said he would be released in a few days. In truth at least according to Bernie’s sister-in-law statements that was not true. She said in fact: “He was critically ill when he was in the hospital. He was in intensive care the whole time.” She adds that doctors kept the star sedated, although he was conscious at times and he contracted a second strain of pneumonia while in the hospital. Also Bernie was actually hospitalized on July 24, eight days before the date given for his admittance. The actor was diagnosed with pneumonia and immediately placed on a ventilator.
A second thing is the rep supposedly said that the Lung Disease ’sarcoidosis’ Bernie suffered was not a contributing factor to his hospitalization. Wrong again! Again the sister-in-law reveals that, Mac’s inflammatory lung disease contributed to his death. “He had sarcoidosis, but it was in remission,” she said. “But because he had it, his immune system was compromised. He had an infection … He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that’s where the pneumonia came from.”
In any case the rep’s apparent deceit or ignorance had of course no bearing on Bernie’s death, but a no comment is better then giving people false hope and wrong information at such a sensitive time.
I also hope in mentioning the circumstances of Bernie’s death that anyone with an autoimmune disease will explore all alternatives and ask their doctor lot’s of questions before they agree to immune suppressant medication therapy. It is usually prescribed (hopefully) only when other courses of medicine fail but it is really a last resort action that should be taken as such. It is definitively a robbing Peter to pay Paul situation. In some cases it is all medical science has to offer for some patients, but some day in the future we will look back at these type of treatments as the dark ages of medicine.
By the way Bernie’s last moments were shared with Bernie’s wife of 30 years, Rhonda, and their 30-year-old daughter, Je’Niece, 30, when he died. The night before Mac died, He struggled for his life. He couldn’t breathe.
“He opened his eyes on his own and looked at Rhonda. She called his name, and he opened his eyes and nodded to her. She smiled at him and told him, ‘Don’t leave me … ‘I’m waiting for you to come back.’ He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that’s when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired.”
Prior to that, the couple had last communicated on July 31. “He told his wife [non-verbally] that he could breathe on his own, and he wanted the ventilator out. He motioned that he wanted it out.
On the day of Bernie’s death, doctors reportedly tried to resuscitate him two times. One time he came back for about an hour. Then he went into cardiac arrest the second time and that was it. Sad, sad …

With heavy heart, I am sorry to say Bernie Mac has passed away this morning at the young age of 50. As we reported previously he was in the hospital with pneumonia, but his rep said he was in stable condition and said he would be released in a few days.
However his rep issued the following statement this morning:
“[He] passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital. No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family’s privacy continues to be respected.”
He’s survived by his wife Rhonda McCullough, their daughter, Je’Niece, a son-in-law and a granddaughter, Jasmine. Such sadness. He was a really great comedian and performer. My condolences to the family. Bless you Bernie Mac, rest in peace!

Even though we knew this day was coming soon it doesn’t make it easy to report. “Golden Girl” Estelle Getty has died this morning at her home in Los Angeles. She was 84. Estelle was surrounded by her family and friends when she went away. She suffered from Lewy Body Dementia for years. Best known for donning a granny wig and oversize glasses to play a character 20 years older than herself, Getty won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her wise-cracking Sicilian mother Sophia Petrillo role on “The Golden Girls.” Did you know that Estelle was actually one year younger then Bea Arthur and Betty White? R.I.P. Estelle!

Larry Harmon who portrayed the wing-haired Bozo the Clown for more than half a century, has died at the age of 83.
Harmon, who first portrayed the beloved children’s character in the 1950s, reportedly suffered heart failure and passed away at his Los Angeles home on Thursday, according to his publicist Jerry Digney.
Pinto Colvig, who provided the voice for Walt Disney’s Goofy, was the first Bozo the Clown, a character created by writer-producer Alan W. Livingston for a series of children’s records in 1946. Harmon, real name Lawrence Weiss, became famed as Bozo the Clown after buying the licensing rights to the franchise from creator Alan W. Livingston and executives at Capitol Records in 1956. Along the way, he embellished Bozo’s distinctive look: the orange-tufted hair, the bulbous nose, the outlandish red, white and blue costume.
His entrepreneurship led to the creation of a series of cartoons, which he voiced, and the comic book character was later portrayed by other actors on local TV stations across the U.S.
Paying tribute to the star, his wife of 29 years, Susan Harmon, says, “(He was) the love of my life.
“He was the most optimistic man I ever met. He always saw a bright side; he always had something good to say about everybody.” Harmon is also survived by his son Jeff Harmon, and daughters Lori Harmon, Marci Breth-Carabet and Leslie Breth.

Lee Grivas, the 26-year-old on-off boyfriend of Christina Applegate, was found dead in the living room of his Hollywood apartment on July 1st by a neighbor. An official cause of death has not been issued, pending toxicology tests. The death was reported as a possible accident or suicide but The National Enquirer is speculating that Gravis died of a heroin overdose.
The 36-year-old Samantha Who? star met Grivas in 2006 while she was performing in the Broadway musical Sweet Charity. The two began dating as Applegate’s marriage to actor Johnathon Schaech unraveled, but she ended the relationship because she reportedly felt Grivas was too much of a free spirit.
A source close to Grivas told The National Enquirer: “Lee also had a long history of drug problems, dating back to his teen years. Christina broke up with him a number of times because of his struggles with getting clean. She loved him, but couldn’t stand by and watch him ruin his life.”
A source also said that Christina is “absolutely devastated over the sudden loss.” I’m sure that’s an understatement!

Ruslana Korshunova, 20, whose face graced the cover of French Elle and Russian Vogue, apparently ‘fell’ from her ninth-floor apartment in her Water Street building in the Financial District at 2:30 p.m Saturday. Ruslana was a young supermodel from Kazakhstan living in New York. Sadly, the young up-and-comer is suspected to have taken her own life on Saturday just days from her 21st birthday. She reportedly jumped off the balcony of apartment in New York. Police reportedly said there were no signs of a struggle in the one-bedroom apartment, where she lived for only two months. And the balcony from which she plunged had construction netting around it that appeared to have been deliberately ripped. Friends and family of Ruslana are baffled as to why she would take her own life. She “loved life” according to a close friend. Those who were close to her insist that she never has had a wild streak nor abused drugs. Her boyfriend had dropped her off at her one-bedroom apartment around 5 AM after they finished watching the movie “Ghost.” Her loved ones don’t believe that she jumped on her own. Currently the fatal fall is being ruled a suicide.
The gorgeous green-eyed beauty was represented by the modeling agency IMG - The same agency that is responsible for Heidi Klum and Kate Moss. She walked the catwalk for Donna Karan, Nina Ricci and Marc Jacobs. She also appeared in ads for Vera Wang and Dior. Jill Stuart and Betsey Johnson were among many designers that employed the green-eyed girl when she was a mere 17 years old. British Vogue had also taken notice of the beauty in 2005 naming her “a face to be excited about.” Korshunova earned the nickname “The Russian Rapunzel” due to her fairytale-like looks. R.I.P.
