This week, Prince Charles put down the pint and meat pie and picked up the checkbook to help Norway stop deforestation around the world. Charles pledged to contribute $541.2 million dollars a year to Norway’s efforts and offered to send representatives to learn more about the problem.
Norway’s Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg, accepted the offer and further invited any country committed to stopping deforestation to come and play ball (metaphorically speaking, of course). Anyway, I’ve been texting George Dubya all day and haven’t gotten a response yet. Typical!
Deforestation in developing countries is estimated to contribute a fifth of total global greenhouse gas emissions through the release of carbon dioxide, and Norway believes the fastest and most cost effective way to help end global warming is to halt this damaging process. Furthermore, in April, Stoltenberg set a goal to make Norway totally carbon neutral by 2050 by offsetting Norwegian greenhouse gas emissions by investing in environmental projects throughout the developing world.
Basically what I’m saying here is: Anyone wanna move to Norway with me?

I’m half Jewish and half Catholic, so I feel like it’s only HALF appropriate I cover this story. But on the other hand, I’m 100 percent green, so here it goes, baby:
Pope Benedict XVI used his Christmas homily to speak out against the destruction of our environment and human selfishness during the midnight mass at St Peter’s Basilica. During the homily, he stated, “Man is so preoccupied with himself, he has such urgent need of all the space and all the time for his own things, that nothing remains for others - for his neighbour, for the poor, for God.” Continuing, he added, “What would he (God) say if he could see the state of the world today, through the abuse of energy and its selfish and reckless exploitation?
The pope is considered to be the spiritual leader of about 1.1 and 1/2 billion Catholics (the half, being me) and just think how much help that homily could do if every last one of them really listened. You know it’s serious when the Vatican goes green.

It’s not often that Jack Nicholson does interviews. As it is, the guy only agrees to make one film per year. His annual entry this year is The Bucket List — a film about two guys (Morgan Freeman plays the other lead) with terminal cancer that decide to do everything they ever wanted to do before they kick it.
Nicholson launches into some pretty clever answers on everything concerning politics, oil, and solar energy. Here are some highlights:
On why he has not been politically active since George McGovern’s 1972 campaign?
“I wanted to do solar energy. I wanted to legalize drugs versus the terrorist problem, which I was aware of in the ’70s. Because where else are they getting illegal money at that level?
Enforce the monopoly laws of the Constitution they’re so proud of, which would have eliminated Enron and the interlocking directorate of conglomeration. Double teacher salaries. Find a way to liase from a personnel point of view between the military and the domestic police. These are all non-starters, what they call in politics. My position as a whippersnapper was ‘hey, any of you people relate to any one of these issues, I’ll know you’re seriously interested in fundamental change. Until you do, I’m not interested in pie-baking contests.’”
On moving the country to solar energy and the influence of big oil:
“How do they talk about these small increments of energy conservation when we burn 60 per cent of the gas at stop signs and traffic lights?” Solar electricity is the only thing that can make an impact on this problem. It’s too big. We don’t have the ability to generate the electricity, to convert, unless we go to big solar. It’s an engineering problem, it’s not a scientific problem. There is no momentum for solar electricity because of the powerful oil industry’s ability to set the scientific and political agenda.
There’s nobody in the field, no teachers, where their livelihood is not dependent in some way on petroleum grants. And I’m not vilifying the petroleum industry right now. … Fact of the matter is, say there is an evil genius. Every day that whatever the petroleum interest is keeps this from being understood, that man is doing his job to the tune of whatever they make every day.”

Joanna Lumley, most commonly known for her work on the British television series Absolutely Fabulous, has teamed up with the dudes and dudettes at Recycle Now to help make this holiday season a little more environmentally digestible. This year, Recycle Now has set a goal to recycle 100 million of the over 1 billion Christmas cards we will write this December.
Lumley went on record saying, “A simple way to help reduce this and help climate change at the same time is to recycle as much as possible and Christmas cards are one of the easiest items to keep out of our bins.” (Did you just laugh a little at the word “bin?”)
Fridey Cordingley, who is the head of Recycle Now added, “The amount of extra rubbish (that’s a funny word too) produced over Christmas is staggering, but there are lots of easy ways to help cut this down. Recycling is an easy way to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and help tackle climate change. The extra waste we create at Christmas produces 1.4 million tons of CO2 - the same as producing enough energy required to enable all the households in Leeds and Doncaster to watch TV for a year. ” (Leeds, Doncaster? Those Brits crack me up!)
So this year, Ecorazzi encourages everyone to find new and creative ways to help reduce the amount of holiday waste produced in the name of jolly, old St. Nick and that infamous so and so, Chanukah Harry. Oh, and I encourage everyone to find new and creative ways to use funny British words in your everyday vernacular…like bin and rubbish.

Ding, Ding, Ding! Round one! The roar of the crowd, the smell of the freshly sharpened number two pencils, the hum of the voting machines; that’s right friends, it’s election time. George W. Bush has served his sentence, and a series of new guys (and gals…or gal) are all lining up for a shot to take over the oval. Everyone has their opinion about who might be the best person for the job, and that of course includes our famous brothers and sisters.
This weekend, Sean Penn released an official statement giving his full support to Dennis Kucinich, saying, “He has been the dominant voice of integrity on issues of trade, labor, education, environment, health, civil liberties, and the one endlessly determined voice of peace.” Penn, never particularly shy to share his political ideas, continued on to speak fondly of Kucinich for his “moral courage”, and devotion to the constitution.
Penn also shared his thoughts about Hillary Clinton, “Don’t underestimate the damage her poisonous ambition can do to this country. We can’t wait for the benefit of hindsight to service the benefit of Mrs. Clinton’s career. ”
Wowsers! And it’s only December kids! Buy your tickets now for another 11 months of celebrities putting on those partisan boxing gloves all in the name of peace. Amen.
To whole speech is available here.

Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson have been spotted in Peru roughing it out and attempting to blend in with the locals. A local celebrity program called ”Magaly TeVe” filmed the pair deep in Peru’s Andes bathing in an irrigation ditch wearing nothing but their boxer shorts. From the article,
“It showed the pair pouring handfuls of water over themselves under the highland sun. Harrelson and Wilson were reportedly visiting a local orphanage they support near Cuzco, the ancient Incan capital.”
That orphanage, Casa de Milagros, is just outside of a spiritual retreat the two are staying at called the Hanaq Pacha Retreat Center. Not only are the accommodations affordable ($50/night) but they’re also unique, with Woody and Owen spending their time in a eco-friendly teepee. The wood and canvas “malocas” sleep up to four people and feature furnishings created by local artisans and the kids of the of the orphanage.
The back-to-basics resort, also sponsored by Harrelson, is a yoga and spiritual retreat that has its own organic gardens that grows vegetables. Seems like a great getaway — and another insight into the great projects sponsored by Woody. Enjoy gents!

Josh Lucas, star of such films as Sweet Home Alabama and Poisdeon, is taking Christmas to the next level: the recycled level. Lucas recently told OK magazine, “My family has been recycling and been part of this moment since I have been born so it’s in my blood.” Maybe that’s why Josh is taking one for the team this year and ditching the traditional Christmas Tree for an organically recycled plastic one.
This whole Christmas Tree fiasco gives me a headache. On one hand I totally understand that cutting down a tree is a waste of a perfectly good shrub, and even though I dig the smell of a real Christmas Tree, I can’t seem to buy one. On the other hand, it’s common knowledge that most “fake” Christmas Trees are made from Polyvinyl Chloride, which in Latin means: non-biodegradable, horrible for the earth, mutant plant that will eat your children. Josh might be on to something with his organically recycled tree, but I don’t have his billfold. So, what I’ve done in the past (and this is super dorky, yet kind of charming to the ladies) is to cut off the top of a pineapple and make a baby tree. It stands on its own and provides an extra ounce of holiday cheer. And since I live in a typical NYC apartment it only takes up half of my living room.
Comment back and tell Ecorazzi how you handle the great Christmas Tree conundrum, or as I’ve unofficially labeled it: The Plight Before Christmas.
One additional shout out: Happy Birthday dad. I love you!

The multi-color, technicolor King of Pop has finally made that essential leap onto the green bandwagon. This weekend, Michael Jackson was seen scooting about town (or rather being scooted about town) in a fancy new Toyota Prius. Jackson has long since had a reputation for being a bit of a thorn in the side of Mother Earth. You know, owning private jets, massive mansions, his own amusement park…that whole bag. And I must say, it’s refreshing to finally see Jackson take a step in the green direction.
Jackson joins a goggle of other celebrities such as Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford, Jennifer Aniston and Will Ferrell, who have all been seen rocking a cleaner driving ride. Say what you want about the guy, but I must give credit where credit is due.
So Michael Jackson, a message from me to you: stay out of trouble and keep on chuggin away in that sweet, green machine.

Do you ever feel like your apartment is too cramped? Ever say to yourself, “Gosh I could totally use my own island?” Well if you’re Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie the thought has more than crossed your mind. It’s been reported that the famous duo just bought one of the exclusive islands that make up the super-development, The World In Dubai.
The World, is located just off the coast of Dubai and was developed by state-owned developer, Nakheel. Although no official reports have been announced, it’s rumored that other celebrities such as David Beckham, Richard Branson and Rod Stewart have also purchased islands.
Have no fear, the eco-aware power couple don’t plan on simply using the island for pina-colada, eighties themed reggae parties. Pitt and Jolie have both declared that they are going to use their new chunk of land to spotlight environmental issues and to promote a greener lifestyle.
Following in their famous footsteps, I too will be promoting a greener lifestyle by dreaming about purchasing my own island…where I WILL be having pina-colada, eighties themed reggae parties.

So this is the premier of a new feature on Ecorazzi where each month we’ll spotlight one green celebrity that goes above and beyond their call of duty to help promote a green way of life. This month we salute Alicia Silverstone.
The year was 2006, I was young lad of 23 working at Angelica Kitchen and trying to survive in NYC. The annual Farm Sanctuary Gala was about to take place, but lack of funds prevented me from attending. Luckily, I was able to volunteer and that is the first time Alicia Silverstone ever spoke with me. I believe the exact words were, “Excuse me, which way is table number 15.” Of course I was familiar with Alicia’s work (both on screen and off) and had secretly been sporting a solid crush on her since Clueless, but it was watching her speak at the Farm Sanctuary Gala that solidified my decision that she might be the greenest celeb ever!!
Alicia resides in Los Angeles in a house that rocks solar panels, an organic vegetable garden and a crew of rescued dogs. As a long time vegan (represent yo), she not only refrains from buying animal products, but takes it a step further by purchasing only organic cotton or alternative fabrics, such as hemp and canvas. And her beauty secret: products from companies like Jurlique and Burt’s Bee’s that are both vegan and good for the earth. Of course she uses energy-efficient light bulbs and also promotes the use of bamboo as a good alternative to wood flooring. When it comes to cruising, you’ll find Alicia chillin in her Toyota Prius with her rescued dog Samson (who is also a vegan). But most importantly, the greatest thing about Alicia is that she uses every possible opportunity to promote her eco-happy lifestyle in a way that’s informative, non-judgmental and totally charming.
Yes, yes, I know that Alicia Silverstone is happily married to musician Christopher Jarecki, but all I’m saying is that if one day that doesn’t work out, I’ll be waiting. I mean she even had a Bat Mitzvah…my grandma would be so proud!

Sienna Miller is Global Cool’s rock star. She’s asked us to turn down our thermostat and wear cool t-shirts. This time she’s back for more - our cell phones.
Global Cool, Vodafone UK and Sienna Miller have teamed up to recycle 500,000 mobile phones. Global Cool tells us, “Over 50 million handsets are currently sit
ting idle in UK households - and less than 5% of the 15 million that get thrown away each year are recycled. What’s more, the estimated worth of the nation’s old handsets is £1.1 billion - money which could be spent on planet saving projects like Solar Aid, which uses the power of the sun to help people help themselves in hot countries around the world.”
In the UK, recycle your old mobile phones, batteries, and accessories in any Vodafone store or send them free to FREEPOST, Foneback Vodafone Recycling.

Colin Firth will soon be turning in his bangers and mash for something new: organic bangers and mash. That’s right mate, Firth, along with brother in law Nicola Giuggiolis, is opening an “ecological destination store” next week in west London. What in the world is an ecological destination store? Well, just that. Firth’s shop will include a spectrum of environmentally friendly and world healthy products that are impressive enough to make even Daryl Hannah crack a nut.
From a computer made of bamboo to Estonian Christmas decorations ( an obvious must have on any Christmas list), Firth is practicing what he preaches by not only selling earth conscious items, but setting a new precedent for “green” London. The pollution free paradise will be Britain’s first and only self-sustainable building by way of sun, plants and solar heating. “We want this to be a good place to meet, and enjoy, as well as learn how to improve the planet”, says Giuggiolis. So in the spirit of education (liquid “u” of course), there will also be solar panels, wind turbines and a green-roof insulation system installed for each guest to explore on their own.
A little bit Hollywood, a little bit Britain, there’s no question that Colin Firth is putting his money where his mouth is. Now if only he could fix that nasty food.

Stop the presses! Former Married With Children star, Christina Applegate, has taken time out of her busy Samantha Who schedule to pose for a holiday themed E-card sponsored by the rock stars at PETA.
Mrs. Applegate looks stunning this holiday season wearing a pair of red gloves and…and…and…well she’s wearing a pair of red gloves. That’s right, bold and brave, Christina Applegate is shedding it all so that the animals don’t have to. The festive online card quotes, “Cross cruelty off your shopping list by avoiding fur coats, collars and cuffs (unless it’s fake of course)”, which is the perfect transition for the overly airbrushed face joke I was planning to make, but I’m gonna take the high road this time…because it’s for a good cause! So from all of us here at Ecorazzi, thank you Christina for getting nakey for the sakey of fakey. You can send your own Christina card to that special loved one here. Happy Holidays!

Leave it to Will Ferrell to take going green to a whole new level through his “Funny Or Die” video website. Enter The Green Team. A trio of aspiring eco-activists played by Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Adam Mckay. Due to language, this video is definitely not safe for work — nor is it safe for anyone easily offended, lacking a sense of humor, or not interested in making love to Mother Earth. Literally.

“I don’t think there’s one Republican I’d ever vote for. In terms of their corruption and their insensitivity to what’s really needed in our society, they’re repugnant. There may be a few good ones out there, but I haven’t read of any.
Whenever you bring up the issue [of global warming] with them, they’re like, ‘Let’s wait and see what the facts are.’ If we’re going to drill for oil, we should get on Crawford [Bush’s ranch in Texas] and put some oil wells there! I think this administration has been probably the biggest tragedy in the history of the United States.”

TV star Hayden Panettiere was involved in a violent confrontation with Japanese fishermen as she and a group of others tried to disrupt their annual dolphin slaughter. The actress, who stars in TV blockbuster Heroes, paddled out in an attempt to reach a pod of dolphins to stop their murder.
The group of surfers including Dave Rastovich, from Australia and the United States, were intercepted by a fishing boat before they could reach the dolphins.
It was a dangerous situation that lasted more than 10 minutes before the surfers were forced to return to the beach.

I don’t believe that shopping will solve our environmental problems. I’ve purchased so many so-called “gifts for good”, I can’t even remember all the stuff I bought but didn’t really need- tote bags to combat global warming, bracelets for every cause imaginable, and so on and so on. So far, I haven’t noticed many changes- polar ice is still melting, species are still being pushed to extinction, and I still consume far more than I should.
Sometimes, though, you feel as though you must buy something (whether justified or not). You find yourself in a situation that calls for a token of some sort- weddings, milestones, important birthdays, etc. For those occasions when a simple handmade card doesn’t cut it, you need something that marks your special celebration without compromising your environmental values. Enter Glassybaby, gorgeous pieces of small glass that can be used as cups, candleholders, or vases.
The small glasses are not only multi-functional, they’re lead-free, come in environmentally-friendly packaging, and best of all, proceeds from a selection of colors go to funding cancer research and patient care. Try a trio from Glassybaby in Grandma Jane’s Caramel, Bedford Brown, and Angel- and know that the warmth you feel isn’t just from the candles you’ve put inside.
If you’re in San Francisco, you can avoid shipping waste and head to the Presidio on Thursday, November 1, where cancer survivor and glassmaker Lee Rhodes will be selling her little lovelies.

Ben Goldhirsh, founder of GOOD Magazine (shown left, with author), knows how to throw a good green party.
LA’s finest came out of the woodwork on a rainy Friday night… and they were clutching biodegradable cups, snacking on raw veggies, and perusing the Natural History Museum. All for a cover charge of a $20 subscription to GOOD Magazine, 100% of which goes to one of 12 charities (including the World Wildlife Federation).
Sound crunchy? Well, eco-fabulous friends, there was hardly a Birkenstock in site. With three DJ’s, open bar (below, with Mountain Goat scenery), and cool video montages, Good Magazine’s 1st birthday celebration was far from hippy.
The mag began one year ago in an effort to add value to today’s media, and to provide a platform for, “the ideas, people, and businesses that are driving change in the world.”
We caught up with GOOD’s humble, smiley Goldhirsh towards the beginning of the party and asked about his venue choice, “The Natural History Museum is visually and intellectually stimulating, just like the magazine.”
And after we’d had enough stimuli… we headed out the door, past a table offering free trees to every party goer via the Million Trees LA program.
Take a look at Goldhirsh’s GOOD Magazine, subscribe, and don’t miss their next fabulous, green, socially conscious soirée.
Summer Bowen runs eco-fabulous store BTC Elements, and writes about fashion, green business, and the eco-chic lifestyle on her blog.

Well, it’s official.
Adding to an already incredible year, former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts “to spread awareness of man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures needed to counteract it.”
This honor comes on the heels of a recent Academy Award for Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Truth, an Emmy for his online television network Current TV; and multiple collaborative projects such as the music bash, Live Earth. Truly — an unmatched year for any person in terms of influence and recognition in so many areas.
Gore joins previous American recipients of the award such as former presidents Jimmy Carter, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt — as well as the Rev. Martin Luther King.
We’ll have more information as it becomes available. Now the question remains: With this latest honor, should Al run for president in 2008? Vote below!

Just yesterday, Friday October 5th Jim Carrey spoke to the U.N. Security Council in New York about the present situation in Myanmar. “This is a government that uses its weapons not in self defense, but against its own citizens,” said Carrey in reference to a possible ban on international arms shipments to Myanmar in hopes of ending both the detention of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the government’s suppression of pro-democracy protesters.
While normally outrageous, disgusting, and freaking hilarious, Jim Carrey demonstrates how star power can stir public interest in serious matters like that of human rights with his U.N. appearance and this YouTube video. Now I’m not sure if his moral obligation comes from being Canadian or dating Jenny McCarthy, but either way he’s neither Dumb nor Dumber in this case.

Both are Homer-esque (Simpson that is), both are Sirius personalities (satellite radio that is), and they both enjoy gamy banter (humorous that is). But the real difference between Howard Stern and Josh Dorfman is that one is a vegetarian. I kid, I kid. Noted eco-hunk, radio host and author of The Lazy Environmentalist is featured in this month’s Domino Magazine on page 67. If you aren’t familiar with Domino, it is to home furnishing as Lucky Magazine is to clothes and fashion. Shopping magazines with expert panache, in other words.
The article reviews a day in the life of Josh and offers some surprising insight about how tough but (seemingly) fun it is to be an green entrepreneur. Besides being The Lazy Environmentalist, Josh also runs an eco-friendly furniture company, Vivavi, based out of Brooklyn and is now the spokesperson for Brita’s Filter For Good campaign. Even if he isn’t a vegetarian. Doh.

Our friends over at Reusablebags.com recently uncovered a clip from Howard Stern back in March, regarding San Francisco’s decision to ban plastic bags. Listen to it below, while watching some plastic bag stats from a San Francisco Chronicle article.
So what does Howard think of plastic bags and the new ordinance? He hates the bags and loves the new rule, saying that we use so many bags, “We bag our bags. We have bags for the bags.”
Already a raw foodie, I still am pleasantly surprised at Howard’s response.

It’s not often in Hollywood that you hear a celebrity making green lifestyle changes to save money. And yet, that’s just what former Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar is attempting with her eco-friendly ways. She recently revealed to SELF magazine that her eco habits are all about the green. From the article,
“‘I take my reusable bag to Whole Foods so I get a discount. I go to Bloomingdale’s on double rewards day. And I always print my dry cleaning coupons before I go. My dry cleaner laughs. He’s like, ‘You don’t have to keep printing them out!’ She also admitted that most of her neighbors are actually annoyed with her green ways, especially the bicycle. ‘Not only is it bright pink with the bell and streamers and the whole thing, but it has Hello Kitty tires. Every time I leave my apartment, my doorman just shakes his head.’”
She also gets grief and laughs from other biking actors for riding with groceries — and going slow. “I’m getting better at it,” she quipped. And Sarah — we commend your green ways. It’s great to see your actions not only benefiting the planet, but also your bank account.

Acccording to the super-sultry Ms. Dita Von Teese, “Nearly four million dogs and cats are put to death in the U.S. every year because there are not enough good homes. You can help prevent this - always spay or neuter your animals, and if you’re considering adding a dog or cat to your family, please adopt from your local animal shelter.” If saving animals can make you look that good, I’m all for it.

Following the tail of PETA’s latest sexed-up TV commercial featuring a nudie Alicia Silverstone which was recently banned in Houston, Texas, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has decided they won’t stop till they get it on: get their animal rights on, that is. They have a grand tradition of voluptuous vixens (Pam Anderson anyone?) and this new campaign reaffirms their commitment to both animals and beautiful women. Not bad. Not bad, at all.

David Letterman’s alma mater, Ball State University, of Muncie, Indiana, is one of 50 U.S. colleges and universities recognized for their green initiatives on campus in the new issue of KIWI magazine. The KIWI Green College Report, available for download in .pdf format on the KIWI web site, to our knowledge marks the first time a consumer magazine has specifically addressed green habits on campus in such a comprehensive fashion.
Says KIWI’s editorial director, Sara Gragnolati, “When we started to research the colleges and universities that have made environmental commitments we were thrilled by the sheer volume of institutions that have made their campuses into eco education centers. It’s inspiring to know that colleges are using their tremendous influence to make sustainability and eco consciousness a way of life for their students.”
Meanwhile, Letterman presided this weekend over the dedication of a LEED-certified building in his honor at Ball State, a $21 million media and communications facility. The late-night comic, who graduated from Ball in 1969, and who thus came of age during America’s first green movement, was no doubt pleased by eco-transformation that the school has undergone since his last visit there, which was in 1979. The college’s service fleet uses biodiesel and the grounds are being beautified as part of a campus reforestation program. Said Letterman: “You who come to teach and learn on this campus are truly blessed.”
Not one to disappoint, Letterman also delivered a top-ten list called “Good Things About Having Your Name on a Building.” Number 1? “Unlike me, it should still look good at 60.” Amazing though it may seem, the comic turned that ripe young age in April.
When he’s not keeping his finger on the pulse of the latest and greatest in the American midswest, Tom Farley also reports on the best of Manhattan nightlife on his blog, NewYorkInsider.TV

Pitzer College in Southern California has been hard at work with members of the student body to design a new series of efficient, sustainable, eco-friendly dorms. Treehugger’s Kenny Luna summed up the new design nicely:
“The dorm itself, according to one student, ‘looks like a resort’, with muted colors to help it blend in with the mountains behind it, organic gardens run by students, a cactus landscape to conserve water, and rooftop gardens to help conserve energy and reduce runoff. They’ve also chosen to include a solar energy system to both create electricity and heat the pool, low-flow shower heads, dual-flush toilets, and even windows that include an automatic shut-off that cuts the hi-efficiency heating and cooling systems when the windows open.”
Not only that, but the green additions are shooting for Gold LEED certification using recycled steel and other materials; with 80% sourced within 200 miles of the campus to cut down on energy costs and emissions. We’ve also received word that Robert Redford and Ed Begley Jr. will be on hand September 24th to tour the dorms and cut the official red ribbon. A future episode of Living With Ed will follow Begley checking out the the site while under construction. Sounds like a great project! Hit the jump for more.

Name the most influential celebrity there is. Got your answer? Was it Jerry Lewis? It wasn’t for me either. However, a recent survey conducted across what in my opinion is a fairly small group of people, showed the 81-year old Muscular Dystrophy Association advocate at the top of the list.
It seems the “older generations” put him there, along with Bill Gates, Jimmy Carter, and Michael J. Fox. And yes, this survey was conducted a while ago (February 2007), prior to this year’s Labor Day Telethon f-bomb gay slur snafu by Lewis, who has since had his apology graciously accepted by GLAAD. The telethon broke records raising pledges of over $63 million.
Younger generations skewed more towards Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey, Bono, and Lance Armstrong. I guess I’m obviously part of the younger generation. While people like Lewis, Gates, Carter, and Fox are doing incredible things, they just aren’t the first ones to come to mind for me.
The survey also ranked the “most important causes” according to the respondents. Cute little children ranked first, followed by adorable puppies. Religion came in at number 6, and the environment followed later at number 8. And please don’t read this the wrong way - I think all causes are worthy, especially ones that help those that can not help themselves.
The purpose of the survey was to get a discussion going and to drive more people towards volunteerism. So get to it people!
