Enjoying a classy night out in the Big Apple, Hilary Swank was spotted glamming up the red carpet at the Escada Honors Damiano Bella Free Arts Benefit on Thursday (October 30).
The “Million Dollar Baby” actress arrived in a fuzzy white wool topcoat to chase away the autumn chill, and once inside, she revealed a shimmery green one-strap dress as she posed for the paparazzi.
Showing off her svelte figure, Kim Kardashian was nothing short of radiant last night at the VH1 Rock Honors party held at Intermix in West Hollywood.
The “Keeping Up with the Kardashian’s” hottie made the walk down the red carpet in a cleavage-baring white and yellow dress with matching heels as she playfully posed for photographers upon entrance.
Always up for a night of partying with fellow celebrities, Audrina Patridge was front and center at the 2008 VH1 Rock Honors party at Intermix in West Hollywood on Friday (July 11).
The event, which pays homage to bands who influenced the sound of rock music, honors The Who this year - with a show to be held at UCLA’s Pauley Pavillion later tonight - premiering on VH1 on Thursday (July 17).

Is Paris Hilton backing away from stories quoting her expressing support for drunk elephants in India? The Associated Press apparently thinks so. They killed a recent story on the Hilton/elephant drama after reps for the heiress said she never made any such statements. We had our suspicions after Paris was quoted somehow pronouncing the Indian village of “Meghalaya”. But seriously, the real losers here are the elephants. Expect more drunken stampedes as a result of Hilton’s drop in support. [the huffington post]
Richard Gere was given the Marian Anderson Award in Philadelphia on Monday for his donation of time and money to the causes for Tibetan independence and HIV/AIDS care. Gere accepted the honor and its $100,000 honorarium at a gala at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “I’m not worthy of this award in any way whatsoever,” Gere said. “I can’t tell you how this makes me feel. My heart is so wide open.” [netglimse]

Organization Film Independent has announced plans to turn the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards into a zero waste event. The event is a celebration honoring movies made by filmmakers who embody independence and who dare to challenge the status quo. Film Independent’s goal is to show that going green does not mean a completely changing one’s lifestyle. “In the same way that we’ve worked towards raising the public’s awareness of independent film, we want to now take a leadership position in demonstrating how some simple changes can impact everyone’s world for the better, ” said show producer, Diana Zahn-Storey.
What are the eco-friendly initiatives being put into action? From the release,
” In addition to in-home streaming of films and voting online, additional efforts include the use of bio-diesel fueled generators and the recycling of numerous items including all food scraps, AstroTurf, wood, and plastic. All printed materials distributed for the awards – including the award show program book, which will include 10 tips for greening your film production – will be produced on 100% post consumer recycled paper using eco-friendly, soy-based inks. In addition, Film Independent will provide a ride-sharing program for those planning to attend the ceremony, which will be available on SpiritAwards.com. The catering, provided by Along Came Mary, will solely use organically grown produce purchased from local farms within a 150 mile radius of Los Angeles.”
Nice. What I love about this is that the word “carbon credits” isn’t used once. Too often, award shows dangle the green label by offsetting the event and then not doing much to actually reduce or divert waste. Hats off to the Spirit Awards for actually putting some real effort into reducing their impact.

It has been announced that Uma Thurman will join Tommy Lee Jones in co-hosting the 2007 Nobel Peace Concert honoring winners Al Gore and the U.N.’s Climate Chance Panel. The December 11th concert, held the day after the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, will draw top music and film stars and be broadcast to more than 100 countries. Whether the world is ready or not, it looks like we’re going to have a mini Live Earth concert special on our hands again.
Slated to perform so far are Alicia Keys, Annie Lennox, Morten Harket, Earth, Wind & Fire, KT Tunstall, and Melissa Etheridge, who won an Academy Award this year for the song ‘I Need to Wake Up,’ which was featured in Gore’s environmental documentary An Inconvenient Truth. From the article,
“Geir Lundestad, the secretary of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, said they were delighted that Thurman had agreed to host. ‘She brings iconic style and substance to the event and will help us tremendously in our mission of spreading the global message of peace,’ Lundestad said.”
Tommy Lee Jones readily accepted co-hosting duties as well. After all, he was Gore’s roommate at Harvard University. Of course!

Every year, the Artivist Film Festival selects three celebrated individuals who have contributed efforts to various causes and initiatives and helped bring about global awareness. Ted Danson, Alyssa Milano and Claes Nobel will be honored this year on November 11th, 2007 in Hollywood, California. With previous honors having gone to such activists as Daryl Hannah, Matthew McConaughey, Joaquin Phoenix, Mira Sorvino, Ed Begley, Jr., and many more, this current group is in good company. From the press release,
“Ted Danson for his work with American Oceans Campaign (AOC) creating awareness for life-threatening eco-hazards to our oceans and through his call for more government action. Alyssa Milano for her extensive work as a relief ambassador with UNICEF and her plight to raise public awareness for neglected tropical diseases faced by over one billion people world-wide. Finally, Claes Nobel, senior member of the Nobel family for his championship of causes related to environmental stewardship, earth ethics and youth outreach.”
Congrats to these three for their contributions to the above causes. Celebrities aside, it should also be noted that the Artivist Awards will honor various cultural creatives, organizations and documentarians who define the “Artivist mission”. For more information, jump here.

While Q’orianka Kilcher’s film career has slowed down a bit since 2005’s The New World, her activism has become increasingly visible and pushed her into the spotlight as a voice for important causes around the world.
In recognition of her work (which we’ve profiled several times on Ecorazzi) Kilcher has been given the premiere environmental award for young people in the US; the Brower Youth Award. Each year, the awards are given to six environmental leaders aged 13 to 22 from North America. The winners each receive a $3,000 cash prize, are honored at a formal awards ceremony in San Francisco, and participate in skills-building and mentoring workshops geared toward furthering their leadership development.
Kilcher’s work for drawing attention to pressing human rights and environmental injustices occurring as a result of oil company Occidental Petroleum in the Peruvian Amazon were specifically singled out. From the release,
“She invited indigenous leaders to participate in a red carpet event, toured the impacted communities and conducted interviews with affected peoples for a documentary, collaborated with U.S. based campaigners Amazon Watch, and met with employees of oil companies to request that they tour the impacted area.”
We congratulate Q’orianka and wish her the best in continuing to help others around the world fight back against environmental injustice.

Al Gore is taking the honor and dropping the cash.
The former V.P. has sent out an email blast to supporters letting them know that all the money received from his recent joint-awarded Nobel Peace Prize (about $750,000) will be donated to the Alliance for Climate Protection — the same group he helped create to fight global warming and other planetary threats. Here’s his official response:
I am deeply honored to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. This award is even more meaningful because I have the honor of sharing it with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change–the world’s pre-eminent scientific body devoted to improving our understanding of the climate crisis–a group whose members have worked tirelessly and selflessly for many years. We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level.
My wife, Tipper, and I will donate 100 percent of the proceeds of the award to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization that is devoted to changing public opinion in the U.S. and around the world about the urgency of solving the climate crisis.
Of course, for a guy with over $100 million in the bank; anteing up the cash to a charitable org won’t hurt his personal savings. I mean, this is a guy who was at Google at the beginning. That company is now worth $600 a share! Besides, we’re the priceless value of winning such an honor would probably be more than enough for Mr. Gore. He wins, we all benefit.

Back in early February, we first heard that Al Gore had been nominated by two Norwegian members of parliament. This is what I wrote,
“I believe Gore might actually have a shot at not only the Oscar, but the Peace Prize as well. Say what you will about his stage delivery (which has improved dramatically), or the amount of emissions he alone generated promoting the film, but his impact has been massive. My mother-in-law watched his movie — twice.”
Of course, any number of people can be nominated by one or hundreds of eligible individuals. Gore’s selection for this award was no great surprise or particularly indicative of any type of outcome. But just like the Oscar, the world is suddenly buzzing that Gore may actually have a shot at receiving the prize. So much so that odds makers have him at a 4 to 1 shot.
All of this drama leads to renewed speculation that Al will announce his 2008 Presidential bid (something I think the guy should stay away from) immediately following the award results. There was even some odd confusion over a scheduled appearance by the former V.P. at a fund raiser for California senator Barbara Boxer. Apparently, according to an email from Boxer, Gore almost canceled at the last minute because he “needs to travel abroad tomorrow for an exciting and urgent mission that could result in a major breakthrough in the fight against global warming.” Wha? He ended up attending the event — but everyone is rampant with speculation on what’s next. Of course, we’ll throw ourselves into the mix.
The announcement will come at 5am EST tomorrow morning. Stand by.

Bill Clinton, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and, Mariah Carey all received honors at The Save The Music 10th Anniversary Gala hosted by Conan O’Brien in New York City.
Evening highlights included an auction emceed by Tim Gunn of Project Runway in which an autographed guitar by Sir Paul McCartney ultimately went for $45,000. And in a not to be missed performance, John Mayer, Jon Bon Jovi and Roger Waters all performed with a 60-piece orchestra comprised of Save The Music Foundation students from across the country. According to sources, Mariah Carey was truly touched by the evening. “This is a wonderful organization,” Carey said during her acceptance. “I don’t talk about it much, but I didn’t have an easy childhood and music literally saved my life.”
The Save The Music Foundation was started in 1997 and has since provided $40 million in new musical instruments and has successfully restored and sustained instrumental music programs in 1,500 public schools in over 100 cities around the country. Kiva.org is no stranger when it comes to receiving celebrity support. The innovative microlending model has changed the way of giving by allowing individuals to loan to entrepreneurs in developing countries . From Adrien Grenier hosting Kiva awareness parties to now Bill Clinton featuring the nonprofit in his book, the Kiva dream is about to be realized exponentially. Today (September 4), President Bill Clinton will be on Oprah to discuss his new book, and he will be joined by Matt and Jessica Flannery, the husband and wife co-founders of Kiva.org. The President and Ms. Winfrey spent the next few minutes talking about the power of the Internet and the Kiva model. Watching this was truly surreal. If you had told me a year ago that I would watch these two people discussing Kiva in front of millions on TV, I would have laughed.
