Are you going to watch the season premiere of TLC's Little People, Big World tonight? You should. Seriously. The show's pragmatic, mostly unsappy depiction of a family overcoming innate challenges makes it, sincerely, one of the best shows on television. It's about dwarfism, yes, but really about the importance of family and the strange wonders of growing up and, quite simply, the daily mechanics of pursuing the American dream. In tonight's premiere, father Matt faces a drunk driving conviction. Nothing cheesy about that!
Michael Kinsley's column about the reaction to the Times' story about John McCain's alleged lobbyist romance is annoying, because it is a Michael Kinsley column in Slate, but it is also pretty spot-on in its parody of New York Times Kremlinology: "I may be creating the possibility that some people might worry that other people might think that I have created the appearance of suggesting that the New York Times has created the possibility that some people might worry that other people might think that McCain has created the appearance that some people might worry that other people might think that there could be an appearance that McCain was having an affair with a lobbyist." Funny cause it's innuendo! Meanwhile, Michael Isikoff's Newsweek story on same suffers from having its most newsworthy scoop sacrificed to the web last week, but it has a couple entertaining details:
First off, lobbyist Iseman is a flirt: "'You always wanted to be lobbied by Vicki,' recalls one longtime Democratic committee aide who often invited her into his office and did not want to be identified acknowledging that he found her attractive."
Secondly, former McCain campaign head John Weaver, who is McCain's old and dear friend, either sparked this whole story through ineptitude or bitterness at his ouster or maybe repressed bad feelings. He emailed the Times on the record about the weird Union Station meeting with Iseman during which he told her to stay the hell away from the candidate.
Finally, that New Republic piece about the Times piece that many say caused the Times to rush their story into print? TNR editor and noted Foer Franklin Foer says TNR would never have ran the piece if the Times hadn't ran their story because TNR is not in the business of running stories with unsubstantiated rumors of sexual impropriety. At least, the Foer-edited TNR isn't in that business.

Gaining popularity by the minute, Jessica Biel continues lining up work, as she has just agreed to star in United Artists’ crime thriller Die a Little.
The movie, which is based on Megan Abbott’s novel, is about “a schoolteacher and her LAPD detective brother whose lives are turned upside down by a mysterious woman.”
There's long been a dearth of good movies set in (and especially filmed in) poor Boston (a.k.a. "Philly On the Charles"). Except The Departed and Mystic River but both of those were by dudes from real places (New York and California, specifically). So Slate's Patrick Radden Keefe is kinda excited about this new movie from Ben "Almost From Boston" Affleck, We Own the Gone Baby Gangster Clayton. Marky Mark and Russell Crowe are in it probably? But it was filmed in the real-life Boston with real-life Bostonians! Except the Bostonians were a little too "real life" and they make Boston look bad.
All the extras have cleft lips, apparently, and no discernable jobs! The women are "sickly skinny" and the men are "gin-blossomed."
"It's Dorchester by way of Diane Arbus," Keefe says, and also it does for Boston "what Deliverance did for Appalachia." Whoops!
Sure, Ben cast mostly real locals he saw wandering around this blue-collar neighborhood to play locals found wandering around this blue-collar neighborhood, but couldn't he have cleaned 'em up a little? He got rid of all the Vietnamese people, how hard would it be to find an semi-attractive extra from Cambridge or somewhere to ship in?
Ben Affleck's Boston [Slate]
In a couple of hours, chronicler of his own loucheness and nominal author Jay McInerney will be hosting brunch at Paris Commune to celebrate Paris Commune serving brunch on weekdays. He's doing it as a favor to his ex, a woman named Jeanine Pepler who runs the PR firm that reps the restaurant. (The story of their connubial dissolution was chronicled by McInerney in an anthology called "Committed." Read the Salon interview.) Today's invitation promises a fabulous giftbag and "as many Bloody Marys as the midday will permit." We've wrangled an invitation by promising we won't be overtly hostile to Mr. McInerney. We will not gently rap him on the forehead and ask, "Is anyone home? Helloooo!? What's your trick, Mr. Magic?" Which is where you come in. Do you have any suggestions for questions we could pose? That aren't rude? When we see him at noon, we'll ask him.
