  Peaches Gelfdof's Stupid Williamsburg Apartment [Shut Up, Brooklyn]

  Maybe our ire at Brooklyn's new Brit-It Girl, sybarite Peaches Geldof, is misdirected. After all, anyone's allowed to move to Brooklyn. If they happen to have a nice apartment, then so be it.

  Well, maybe it's because the 19-year-old cokey rock-star child writes that the best part of living in Brooklyn is "the Spanish gangsters at the bagel shop who hit on me." She lives with two roommates—somebody calling themselves "Bunny," as well as "Lily," who is a Teen Vogue intern. Not sharing the apartment: her husband, musician Max.

  Speaking of decorative objects, we're totally not buying the idea that they've actually read the books on the bookshelf: Isaac Asimov, Thomas Pynchon, Jungian Symbolism in Astrology, Water: For Health, For Healing, For Life, and The Da Vinci Code. Actually, we do believe those last three.

  Real World Brooklyn's Transgendered Cast Member Should Set Her Livejournal to Private [Shut Up, Brooklyn]

  Katelynn, the token transsexual cast member of the Real World Brooklyn, has a freaking Livejournal! We're so excited—it's called "Indigo Child Kate." As you surely remember from an old NYT trend piece, "indigo children" are especially "gifted" kids that "share traits like high I.Q., acute intuition, self-confidence, resistance to authority and disruptive tendencies, which are often diagnosed as attention-deficit disorder." Sounds about right. Queerty already reported that Katelynn recently wrote about feeling pissed and "defamed" after Gothamist took a tour of their Red Hook home. (She's gonna have a lot more to be pissed about once she sees how MTV producers edit the Real World to make everyone into the biggest douches!) What does Indigo Child Kate have to say in her online diary?

  
  
  

  Alrighty, so my hiatus has found itself at an end; I ventured out to Brooklyn and now I have returned - that's the good news. The bad news is that I am contractually forbade from talking about my experience out there. Let me repeat that, I cannot talk about my experiences out in Brooklyn. I can (and will), however, post information as soon as I am allowed to.
  
  Over the years this space has largely been my diary. It has also served as a path to spiritual and emotional growth, and a sounding board for socio-political issues. It has, largely, been a public domain, and I intend to keep it as such. However, due to the mass of publicity this little space is about to endure, I am privatizing a good part of my journal... For the most part, I plan to keep my journal fairly public, just being a fair bit more selective about which things get made public..

  However:
  

  With public recognition comes public defamation; it's just part of the territory. As the next few months unfold I have prepared myself for the onslaught of vitriol, however I thought it would at least be spewed to my face... Well today I had the unfortunate experience of being interviewed by one such individual, Billy Parker from The Gothamist.
  
  He was nice enough as he smiled and shook my hand. He listened attentively and made sure to jot down the bulk of what I was talking about, directly quoting and short-handing as necessary... then proceeded to ignore every word of what I said and reverted back to his syntactically decrepit castigation of me and my fellow interviewees... I know that as time progresses I will need to become more thick-skinned, yet it still irritates me that someone can smile so sweetly to your face before sharply pressing their blade to your throat the instant your back is turned.

  Damn, Billy Parker. You pressed a knife blade to her throat?! Um, this is all that Gothamist wrote about Katelynn: "There isn't one New Yorker in the bunch—but this season features the first transgender (and the token Mormon, Iraq vet and gay dolphin trainer, naturally)."

  Seriously, Katelynn really doesn't like media: she's the one responsible for the hysterical "I don't talk to the fucking press!" screaming/shoving match with the NY Press. With all this media-hating, why sign on to have cameras document your every mood for four months in the first place?

  Williamsburg Hipsters Had It Coming in Clash with Cops [Shut Up, Brooklyn]

  We were so close to making it through a whole day believing that the pure joy of Obama's win had redeemed hipsters. That spontaneous post-election street celebration amongst Williamsburg's creative-class was both bad-ass and beautiful. Until the cops inevitably showed up. After all, the streets were completely blocked with people. In places like Harlem, Union Square and the East Village, clearing intersections seems to have gone pretty peacefully. But we've been getting shocked reports all day — police brutality against white kids! — and Brooklyn Vegan posted a comprehensive photo gallery of the festivities, including the copster-on-hipster clashes.

  One breathless account: "A few minutes after the riot cops rolled in, I saw one cop break a beer bottle on the ground with his baton for no reason at all amidst all the positive energy and celebrating crowd. I assumed for intimidation purposes." (Uh, how about for open-container-law purposes?)

  This is a perfect example of hipster overreach—you see, they deserve to block traffic in one of the densest cities on earth! We're all for reclaiming the streets—punk rock!—but the shock and indignation over some arrests only adds to the stereotype of the massive self-entitlement these relatively privileged young transplants possess.

  Brooklyn Vegan's commenters pretty much agreed:

  We had 3x as many people partying on 125th St in Harlem and not a single person got arrested. There are some things you just don't do during a joyus celebration.

  It seemed the crowd was enjoying a slice of anarchy...
  You know anarchy.. Like drinking a 22oz of Olde English in front of a cop out on the Quad. At one point, a woman on top of a vehicle was enjoying the attention she was getting after she took off her top and exposed herself. Go Obama!! From afar the celebration congregation looked like a good thing, but when I looked closer it was sad.

  Hipster Kickball Tension as Season Winds Down [Shut Up, Brooklyn]

  Many a trend piece has begun in and around Williamsburg's hip, multi-culti McCarren Park: the Times has been loving to point out what it means for the Way We Live Now, as well as fetishized its summer of rock shows in an empty pool. (Kids with dreads and tattoos!) But nothing has expressed the leisure activities and lifestyle choices of the creative slacker underclass as well as the rag-tag group of young creatives, hipsters, and drunks that make up the Brooklyn Kickball League. We've entertained you with their exploits all summer. And now, as fall approaches, the season is almost over. Yet what would the end of yet another kickball season be without one last fight?

  "Soooo I almost started a riot on Sunday with members of the Pirates. [You might remember the Pirates—one of their members was arrested earlier this summer for ">brandishing a sword inside Macy's.]

  Long story short: they always put their Pirate flags up in all over the dug out fence, so when my team got over to our dugout (note: their dugout), i went to take a Pirate flag down cause it was annoying and right in the middle of everything and being that we were actually playing, I felt like claiming the dug out.

  Naturally, this upset the rabblerousing Pirates quite greatly, and they all jumped up like, "Woooah woah woah woah", who the fuck do you think you are!, etc. etc. etc. all in their dumb pirate hats. Then the one dude said something about how he's an "equal opportunity hater". Which feels like something Sarah Palin would say.

  Then he started saying how that flags been their longer than i have, and its hiiiiiiiiistory and all this bullshit. Ugh, lame Pirates (aka Los Piratas Mechanicos)."

  The much-vaunted Miss Williamsburg pageant we http://gawker.com/5036206/we-will-be-at-the-williamsburg-pageant-with-bells-on">warned you about has come and gone. What to say—the hip neighborhood manages to simultaneously be everything that's wrong and right with Brooklyn's creative slacker class. Since we didn't have the energy to attend (it sounded exhausting), we are happy that the New York Press covered the blessed event. "The girl crowned Miss Williamsburg, C.J. Johnson, boasted the talent of shot-gunning a PBR and taking her panties off through an American Apparel 'onesie'..." Click through to see the crowned King and Queen of Williamsburg, along with pageant drama (includes Xanax and New Jersey!)

  "But first I had to ask [pageant coordinator] Misha one last thing: 'What’s with the MC? No one can understand a word he says.' Misha started sweating missiles. 'This fucking DJ is huge in Berlin!' she sputtered, 'the crowd should be lucky to hear him mumble. So he did a little too much Xanax before the show and maybe a bunch of other stuff.'"

  Also, scandal: we hear the newly-crowned Ms. Williamsburg is actually from Jersey...! And that the dude winner is actually coordinator Mischa's sister's boyfriend!

  Times Shamefully Downplays Importance Of Hipster Kickballers [Shut Up, Brooklyn]

  It's about time that the paper of record started covering the happenings in McCarren park, the ragged dirt patch that is home to the Brooklyn Hipster Kickball League, that den of sociological intrigue so ably chronicled by our own Sheila McClear. What with the legal drama and fundamental instances of human love associated with the hipster kickballers, it's no stretch to say that they are the demographic group most worthy of media coverage in NYC or anywhere else. But in an article today that is lightly reported to a comical degree, the Times attempts to deny the BHKL-ers their rightful place at the top of our minds!:

  As you would expect, the reporter starts off the article by telling you that she has been in Williamsburg for a decade—way before all these gentrifiers got here. But in her discussion of McCarren Park and the accompanying photo slide show, the kickballers receive only a passing mention in a photo caption! Instead, the reporter's single source for the story of the park's rich variety is a 64-year-old Ecuadorean hot dog vendor. What does she know about Bloc Party? Sheesh.

  Gossip Girl Invades Carroll Gardens, Olds Are Befuddled, Enraged [Shut Up, Brooklyn]

  I was wandering the streets of Carroll Gardens (Brooklyn Heights' free-spirited sister) during a Bastille Day celebration last month, and there were people, tons of people!, wearing straw hats and frothy summer dresses and being languid and too cool for anything other than drinking in the summertime. And there I was, hungover as hell, tromping over from my—fine, I'll admit it—South Slope apartment, looking like a hobo wearing a pickle barrel. So it's heartening to hear, via our tips line, that some of those Smith Street whipsters (wealthy hipsters) are old and upset about... Gossip Girl!

  lots of no-parking signs/film permits on the side streets of smith street; fucking up our parking situation. we are old and don't watch the show. please make them leave.

  Hahhh, old person alert! Your joints hurt and you don't understand the giddy thrills of shitty television shows starring hard-bodied muppets who make you want to laugh and clap and cry all at the same time! No we won't make them leave! We'll make them stay. You hear me, Josh Schwartz? Film in Carroll Gardens all the fucking time.

  Real estate folks made up terms like SoHo and TriBeCa in order to hype up undeveloped neighborhoods. But if you're not in real estate, you just sound like a jerk! In Time Out this week, two Bushwick roommates call their area of Brooklyn "Billywick or Bushburg. "You sound like an asshole when you say you’re from Williamsburg," says one. (Uh-oh.
